Abstract: | transports and metabolizes maltose by a pathway that does not involve the phosphoenolpyruvate dependent phosphotransferase system (PTS). Maltose appears to enter the cell by difusion, is hydrolyzed to glucose, which is then metabolized chiefly by the PTS, but a second minor pathway of glucose metabolism is also present. |
