On carotenoid synthesis in Phycomyces blakesleeanus

Results with mixtures of β-ionone and methylheptenone indicate that they act independently in their effects on carotenoid production in Phycomyces. A tentative scheme to explain results to date suggests that as between β-carotene, on the one hand and phytofluene, ζ-carotene, and neurosporene, on the other, in the final stages, the reactions are not sequential but follow divergent pathways.
