Abstract: | A structural protein was isolated from the cuticle of Ascaris lumbricoides and studied by chemical analyses, electron microscopy, and X-ray diffraction. It has high contents of proline and alanine and relatively low contents of glycine and basic amino acids. It does not give the characteristic wide-angle X-ray diffraction pattern of collagen. It is not susceptible to bacterial collagenase. In these respects, it is distinct from collagen. The name “cuticlin” is proposed for this protein. |
