Abstract:A modified Sehwarzbach jet spore trap was used to sample Phytophthora infestans populations in small crops of potato within polyethylene tunnels and in the field. Airborne sporangia were eaptured in the trap and deposited upon potato leaf discs, of a cultivar lacking race-specific resistance genes, contained within the trap. Virulence characters of isolates captured in the spore trap were determined by subculturing the isolates on leaf discs of a range of potato genotypes with race-specific resistance (R-genes), incubating them and then recording compatible and mcompatible reactions, reactions. For four isolates of P. infestans the levels of sporulation on the differential leaf discs were noted and although cultivar × isolate interactions were inconsistent, variable light and temperature conditions had no significant effect on the reactions of the cultivars.
