Abstract:The worldwide incidence of HIV infection continues to rise despite more than a decade of intense research aimed at developing effective intervention strategies. Because the mechanisms of action of the essential HIV gene products are now known, these have become potential targets for intervention. Some of these targets are attractive candidates for intervention by gene therapy. This review will focus on the recent progress in gene therapy strategies, including approaches approved for clinical trials. The efficacy of these various anti-HIV strategies, as well as the advantages and drawbacks of the different existing gene delivery systems, will be discussed.
