The effects of a saluretic (Lasix) on adrenal steroidogenesis in the echidna (Tachyglossus aculeatus)

Abstract:1. Metabolic turnover studies during 7 days Lasix administration showed a water and sodium loss which sustained for 3 days, potassium was unaffected.2. Adrenal homogenates from treated echidnas converted 14C progesterone to cortisol, corticosterone, aldosterone, 11-deoxycortisol and 11-deoxycorticosterone in yields of ; 6 ± 0.2, 46 ± 4, 0.3 ± 0.1, 8 ± 2 and 13 ± 5% (mean ± SEM) respectively.3. Compared to controls, cortisol, corticosterone and aldosterone increasedby factors of 12, 7 and 15 respectively.4. The peripheral blood aldosterone was, in Lasix treated echidnas 44 ng/100 ml a 5-fold increase.5. The Km and V for 11β-hydroxylation of 11-deoxycorticosterone were 35 μM and 9 ϱmol/min/mg. the V increase being 3-fold.
