Abstract:It is speculated that catch in molluscan muscle depends on sustained high levels of free intracellular calcium ion, that 5-HT (5-hydroxytryptamine, serotonin) in proportion to its concentration, increases the binding of intracellular calcium to a “relaxing” system, and that reduction of intracellular free calcium explains the apparent paradox that catch is relaxed while membrane excitability is increased. The speculations are based upon experiments detailing the relationship between 5-HT concentration and its action on catch and membrane excitability. An analogy is made between these results and the relationship between calcium concentration and action on contractility and membrane excitability in a striated muscle.
