Abstract:Metabolism of E. histolytica was followed by appearance of radioactivity products in different fractions when the cells were supplied with C14-labeled sugars. It has been demonstrated that the activity of amebae in the presence of bacteria is not the same as the activity of amebae alone. It is shown here that amebae suspensions washed free of accompanying organisms as reported in this paper demonstrate fermentation which is exclusively amebal. Some general features of glucose and maltose utilization have been shown, and some properties of the products have been reported. Further work is in progress directed toward identification of compounds and mechanisms of metabolic activity of the amebae.
