Abstract:Objective To investigate the effect of feed calcium, phosphorus and calcium/phosphorus ratio on the body weight and bone development of growing rats. Methods 70 male Wistar rats aged 30 d were divided into 7 groups randomly according to their body weigh, 10 for each group was considered as one batch for test. Rats in 7 groups were raised on diets with different feed calcium and phosphorus concentration for 42 d. Results In the same feed calcium or phosphorus concentration but with different Ca/P ratio, the body weight and bone development of the growing rats were better in the group fed diet with Ca/P ratio of 1.2 : 1 than that of 0.4:1 and 4:1 ( P 〈 0.05). With the same feed Ca/P ratio, the body weight and bone development of the growing rats were better in the group fed diet with Ca/P ratio of 1.2: 1, even in the group of LL and HH, but the other groups fed diet with Ca/P ratio of 0.4:1 and 4:1 had significant deviation ( P 〈 0.05). Conclusion Calcium and phosphorus should be in proportion and in adequate amount in the feed, otherwise the body weight and bone development of the rats may be affected. The results of this study indicate that the body weight and bone development of growing rats are better fed with diet of Ca/P ratio of 1.2:1.
