Abstract:Growing health problems related to obesity have focused considerable attention on a number of neurotransmitters, particularly hypothalamic neuropeptides, involved in regulating energy homeostasis and food intake. As the fast-acting transmitters GABA and glutamate underlie the majority of fast synaptic activity in the hypothalamus, understanding neuropeptide modulation of amino acid transmitter actions may be key to a full appreciation of how the brain controls caloric balances.
