Abstract: | Phaseolus aureus seeds were separated into three parts: hulls, cotyledons and hypocotyls. After the polysaccharides in eachpart had been fractionated by successive extraction with water,0.25% ammonium oxalate-oxalic acid, 4% KOH and 24% KOH, thexyloglucan content in each fraction was determined by Kooiman'smethod for quantitative analysis of amyloid coupled with cellulasetreatment. In each part, most of the xyloglucans were localizedin the 24% KOH extracts and moreover, these xyloglucans fromthe three seed parts had almost identical properties, whichagreed well with those of xyloglucans from the cell walls ofetiolated bean hypocotyls.
