Development of Jobacco Carpel Primordia in vitro

The state of determination of the two emergent carpel primordiaof Nicotiana tabacum was tested. Carpel rudiments were excisedand cultured singly or in pairs. The basal medium was that ofLinsmaier and Skoog, supplemented with 1.0 mg 1^–1 kinetin.Over the ensuing 4 week period, whole differentiated pistilsformed from the pairs and half pistils grew from the singlecarpels. It is concluded that these emergent organs show a certaindegree of autonomy and that they may have been determined atthe time of isolation.
