Abstract: | Buruli ulcer (BU) is an emerging infectious disease caused by Mycobacterium ulcerans (M. ulcerans). Clinical observations from infected patients in the endemic zone of the West Africa reveal that severe M. ulcerans infections can induce skeletal muscle contracture and atrophy leading to significant invalidity. Although significant advances have been made for the epidemiological, clinical and therapeutic aspects of the disease in the past ten years, several questions remained unanswered on the muscle physiopathology of the M. ulcerans. This article is one of the first attempts to shed some light on this neglected disease and unravel the impact of M. ulcerans on skeletal muscle. |
