Abstract:Data of human babesiosis are shortly reviewed with particular emphasis to Europe. In Europe, most cases of human babesiosis are caused by Babesia divergens. Although both phenotypic and genotypic features suggest that zoonotic B. microti may occur in Europe, convincing medical evidence is lacking. Recently a non-Babesia divergens organism causing zoonotic infection has been found in Italy and Austria. Overall, the seroprevalence against both B. microti and B. divergens microrganisms in human ranges 1.5%-11.5% in Europe.
