Abstract:Net-collected Ethmodiscus spp. were examined and found to becapable of positive buoyancy with ascent rates averaging 1.4m h–1 on individually measured cells, and 0.3 m h–1using a homogeneous settling technique. These data, togetherwith published reports of positive buoyancy in Rhizosolenia, indicate that upward movement is a widespread phenomenon inlarge oceanic diatoms. These observations also suggest thatpublished size-rate relationships for marine diatoms requirerevision to include the effects of positive buoyancy.
