Abstract: The electrostatic contribution to the reduction potentials due to the unit charges of ionizable residues largely explains the span in redox potentials in a series of high-potential Fe4S4 iron-sulfur proteins and mutants. This appears to be a lucky case in which other contributions (in general) larger than that due to unit charges cancel out. Received, accepted: 26 November 1996
