The Meaning of Matric Potential
Authors:PASSIOURA   J. B.
Abstract:The commonly used equation, {Psi} = P - {pi} + {tau}, which describes thepartitioning of plant water potential, {psi}, into components ofhydrostatic pressure, P, osmotic pressure, {pi}, and matric potential,{tau}, is misleading. The term {tau}, which is supposed to show the influenceof a solid phase on {Psi}, is zero if a consistent definition ofpressure is used in the standard thermodynamic derivation. However,it can be usefully defined by {tau} = {Psi} + {pi}D, where {pi}D is the osmoticpressure of the equilibrium dialysate of the system. The practicaland theoretical significance of this definition is discussed.
