Abstract:The free calcium concentration in the cytoplasm of higher plant cells is believed to be about 10−7M. The role of various membrane-borne calcium transporters present in plant tissues, together with chloroplasts and mitochondria, in maintaining this calcium concentration is reviewed, together with the role of various organelles in providing transient calcium fluxes upon stimulation.
