EFFECTS OF STATIC AND ELF MAGNETIC FIELDS ON FREE-RADICAL PROCESSES IN RAT LIVER AND KIDNEY
Abstract:The aim of the study was to evaluate the activities of the antioxidant enzymes superoxide dysmutase (SOD, EC. 1.15.1.1), catalase (CAT, EC. 1.11.1.6), and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px, EC. 1.11.1.9) and the levels of malonic dialdehyde (MDA), a phospholipid peroxidation product, in the liver and kidneys of male and female rats exposed to static (0.49-T) and extremely low-frequency (50-Hz, 0.018-T) magnetic fields. Extremely low frequency magnetic fields increased all enzyme activities and MDA levels in both the liver and kidneys. In contrast, static magnetic field did not produce changes. The results of the study suggest that ELF magnetic fields affect free-radical processes in the liver and kidney.
