Abstract: | Summary The activities of several enzymes involved in the oxidation of ethanol and in the formation of oxaloacetate from acetate were compared in the yeasts Saccharomyces cerevisiae, Hansenula anomala and Rhodotorula glutinis grown on glucose and acetate, respectively. The most striking differences in the regulation of enzyme activities were found for alcohol dehydrogenase, acetaldehyde dehydrogenase, and malate dehydrogenase. The activities of the other enzymes tested behaved rather similar; in all three yeast species the enzymes of the glyoxylic acid by-pass showed the most extensive increase of activity in cells grown on acetate. |
