Abstract: | Excretion is severely reduced in Rhodnius prolixus infected with Trypanosoma rangeli, particularly in those bugs with hemocoelic infections. Several factors probably contribute to this reduction: tissue damage, lack of diuretic hormone or the presence of a chemical inhibitor in the hemolymph, and changes in its osmotic pressure. Each affects the excretion and mortality of infected insects in various ways. |
