Abstract: | An undescribed Nosema was found infecting adults of the mecopteran Hylobittacus apicalis. This microsporidium is described herein as the first record of a microsporidium from the order Mecoptera. The slightly pyriform spores measured 4.5 × 2.4 μm. Mature spores had 9.5–10 polar filament coils irregularly grouped in the posterior end. The life cycle and ultrastructure of the developmental stages were described, and were typical of other Nosema spp. This microsporidium was regularly recorded from adult Hylobittacus apicalis populations over a 10-year period and tbe incidence of infection increased during the summer. |
