Abstract: | Abstract One important factor contributing to the virulence of Pseudomonas aeruginosa is its ability to acquire transferrin-bound iron. This is achieved by means of endogenous iron transporting compounds. The organism can also use the enterobacterial iron transporting compound, enterochelin. The scandium complex of enterochelin induces bacteriostasis of P. aeruginosa in serum and also exerts a therapeutic effect on P. aeruginosa infections in mice. |
