Abstract: | Summary The sulphur contents of the muds, water and vegetation at the northern end of Lake Victoria have been determined. Contrary to previous assumptions it was found that the sulphur in the bottom deposits is principally in the form of organic compounds and not as sulphides. Evidence is presented which suggests that the muds are in an aerated condition. The water of the lake contains extremely small amounts of sulphur and receives a negligible quantity of this element from the rain. The soils of the islands in the lake are rocky and well-leached of sulphur except where patches of forest conserve it. Certain peculiarities were noted in the behaviour of the muds and these are to be discussed in a future paper. |
