Abstract:A multivariate study of variation in mandible dimensions was conducted to determine whether common shrews of different karyotypic race (Aberdeen, Oxford, Hermitage) in Britain differ in morphology. Differences between samples from north and south Britain suggest that geography is more important than karyotype as a morphological determinant. However, the distinctiveness of hybrids in the 'Oxford-Hermitage' hybrid zone raises the possibility that there are genetic differences between the races.
