The linearity of the stress-strain relationship for food gel is limited to a very narrow range of the strain (usually less than 0.1 as a Cauchy measure). The reason is thought due to the change in cross-sectional area of the gel upon deformation. In this report, the cross-sectional area was approximately corrected of the compressed gel on the assumption that the gel expanded uniformly without changing its volume upon compression. In cases when the initial Young’s modulus was calculated from the thus-corrected area for some food gels, the linearity was increased for a wider range of strain. 相似文献

Beavers Castor spp. are generalist herbivores, feeding on the bark, shoots and leaves of woody plants, terrestrial herbs and forbs, ferns and aquatic vegetation. As central-place foragers, beavers move out from water to select and cut trees and vegetation, and then transport it back to their refuge. These terrestrial forays are energetically costly; therefore, beavers should concentrate their foraging activity near the central place and increase the degree of selectivity for specific sizes or species of food with increasing distance from the water. The aim of this study was to test the predictions of the central place and the optimal foraging theories for the food selection of the Eurasian beaver Castor fiber , and show the foraging preferences of the focal species in the boreal conifer forest zone of Europe. Foraging intensity by beavers and the abundance of woody species were surveyed in transects positioned randomly at seven beaver territories. In compliance with the central-place foraging theory, the foraging intensity declined with increasing distance from the river. Beavers fed preferentially on willows ( Salix ), rowan ( Sorbus ) and birches ( Betula ), although alders ( Alnus ) dominated their diet. Size selectivity showed similar patterns to previous North American studies, which were also carried out in habitats with predominantly small saplings. The probability of selection of small saplings dropped as distance increased, which is consistent with the predictions of optimal foraging models that larger prey items are more likely to be favoured with increasing provisioning distance. 相似文献

The release of endogenous amino acids from depolarized rat hippocampal mossy fiber synaptosomes was investigated to assess the possible role(s) of glutamate and aspartate in mediating the excitatory mossy fiber synaptic input. The relative proportions of prodynorphin-derived peptides concomitantly released with amino acids were also determined to further characterize the biochemical basis for mossy fiber synaptic transmission. Of the 18 amino acids shown to be present in superfusate fractions by liquid chromatographic analysis, only glutamate was released at a significantly enhanced rate from K+-stimulated (35 mM KCl) mossy fiber nerve endings. The rates of glutamate and aspartate release were increased by 360±27% and 54±12% over baseline respectively. However, the K+-evoked release of glutamate was substantially more Ca2+-dependent (80%) than was the release of aspartate (49%). The veratridine (45 M)-evoked release of both acidic amino acids was entirely blocked by 1 M tetrodotoxin. Depolarization (45 mM KCl) also stimulated the release of the four prodynorphin (Dyn) products examined, in a rank order of Dyn B >> Dyn A(1–17) > Dyn A(1–8) >> Dyn A(1–13), with Dyn B efflux increasing by more than 5-fold over baseline values. These results suggest that the predominant excitatory amino acid in hippocampal mossy fiber synaptic transmission may be glutamate and that this synaptic input may be modulated by at least four different products of prodynorphin processing.The animals involved in this study were procured, maintained and used in accordance with the Animal Welfare Act and the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals prepared by the Institute of Laboratory Animal Resources—National Research Council. 相似文献

Summary Flies (Musca domestica) avoid danger by initiating a rapid jump followed by flight. To identify the visual cues that trigger the escape response in the housefly, we measured the timing and probability of escapes when the fly was presented with a variety of visual stimuli created by moving targets toward it. Our results show that an escape response is triggered by an approaching dark disk, but not by a receding dark disk. On the other hand, a bright disk elicits escape only when it recedes. A disk with black and white rings is less effective at eliciting escape than is a dark solid disk of the same size. This indicates that the darkening contrast produced by an approaching stimulus is a more crucial parameter than expansion cues contained in the optical flow. Escape is also triggered by a horizontally moving dark edge, but not by a moving bright edge or by a grating. An examination of several visual parameters reveals that the darkening contrast, measured from the onset of stimulation to the start of escape is nearly constant for a variety of stimuli that trigger escape reliably. Thus darkening contrast, coupled with motion may be crucial in eliciting the visually evoked escape response. Other visual parameters such as time-to-contact or target angular velocity seem to be relatively unimportant to the timing of escapes.Abbreviations

Effect of calcitonin gene-related peptide on the neuroeffector mechanism of sympathetic nerve terminals in rat vas deferens 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
In order to evaluate the mode of action of calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) on the neuroeffector mechanism of peripheral sympathetic nerve fibers, the effects of CGRP were tested on the electrical stimulated and the non-stimulated preparations of the isolated rat vas deferens. The contractile responses, which were mediated predominantly by activation of postganglionic noradrenergic nerve fibers, were dose-dependently inhibited by CGRP in concentrations ranging from 0.1 to 10 nM. The inhibitory response produced by CGRP in high concentrations (greater than 2 nM) usually returned to the control level at 20-30 min and were rarely tachyphylactic. The inhibitory action of CGRP was not modified by pretreatment with 10(-7) M propranolol or 10(-7) M atropine. Contractions produced by exogenous norepinephrine (NE) and 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) in unstimulated preparations were not affected by pretreatment with CGRP in a low concentration (less than 2 nM). On the other hand, the contractions were slightly reduced 1 min after pretreatment with CGRP in high concentrations (greater than 5 nM), which recovered in 15 min after constant flow washout. High concentrations of CGRP also caused a concentration-dependent relaxation on the precontracted preparations produced by high potassium (60 mM K+) solution. These results suggest that CGRP in high concentrations (greater than 5 nM) may have a non-specific inhibitory action on the postsynaptic plasma membrane of the smooth muscle cell and a postulated CGRP receptor exists presynaptically in the rat vas deferens and that CGRP may inhibit the release of NE during adrenergic nerve stimulation. 相似文献

Summary A dorsal-horn fiber system is revealed in the thoracic spinal cord of guinea pig by means of substance P immunocytochemistry. This system has repeated craniocaudal and/or caudo-cranial extensions and possesses five main components: (1) a superficial network, situated beneath the dorsolateral surface of the spinal cord. This network is connected with the dorsal root fibers and the accumulations of substance P-like immunoreactive (SP-LI) fibers in the Lissauer's tract; (2) an accumulation of SP-LI fibers in the Lissauer's tract at the border of the dorsal horn; (3) two collateral SP-LI fascicles (one lateral and one medial) emerging from the SP-LI fiber accumulation in the Lissauer's tract; (4) a transversal fascicle running through laminae III–V, and (5) an SP-LI network in the region of the lateral spinal cord nucleus. These components of the dorsal-horn fiber system show widespread connections with ipsi-and contralateral spinal cord areas, connecting them in cranio-caudal and/or caudo-cranial directions. The SP-LI dorsal-horn system has close relationship with groups of preganglionic sympathetic cells in the intermediate zone of the spinal cord, respective with the vegetative network of this zone. It is suggested that some fibers of the dorsal-horn system that originate from dorsal-root ganglia may represent primary sensory or visceral afferents. It is likely that the dorsal-horn fiber system and the vegetative network of the thoracic spinal cord may represent the morphological basis for the integration of (1) the central and peripheral vegetative nervous systems, and (2) the somatic and vegetative nervous system. 相似文献

Summary By combining the Golgi and the electronmicroscope techniques it has been possible to identify accurately the system of centrifugal fibers which arborizes in the lamina of muscoid flies forming the so-called nervous bags. Each of them originates from a single fiber entering the lamina at the site in which the second order and the long visual fibers leave it. This single fiber represents the peripheral portion of a T-shaped trunk stemming from a small neuronal body located in the external region of the medulla. The central branch terminates within the first synaptic field of this visual center.After entering the lamina the centrifugal fiber ramifies profusely and its branches can be seen climbing and synapsing on the surface of the photoreceptor axon endings. The synaptic loci show characteristic synaptic ribbons located within the nervous bag fibers. This fact suggests that direction of conduction is from the medulla to the lamina. The effects of denervation and hindlimb suspension induced disuse on concentrations of ATP, phosphocreatine (PC), and fiber type profile were investigated in slow twitch soleus and fast twitch extensor digitorum longus (EDL) muscles. The results show that the soleus and EDL muscles differ in their dependency on loadbearing as a stimulus for maintaining normal energy metabolism and the biochemical and morphological characteristics of muscle fibers. As determined by R-P methodology, suspension reduced ATP and PC concentrations of the soleus to 26% and 56%, respectively, while, in EDL only, PC is reduced to 71% of control with no change in ATP. Both muscles, however, show identical losses in ATP and PC following denervation. The energy charge, an indicator of Pi availability in muscle was reduced significantly in both denervated muscles to 82% and 85% in soleus and EDL, respectively. No significant reduction of the energy charge was seen in the muscles from suspended rats. Thus, in parallel with the indirect regulation through muscle loadbearing, the nerve can effectively modulate the levels of high-energy phosphates more directly by some regulatory mechanisms independent of muscle type. Denervation and suspension disuse increased the proportion of type 2 fibers in the soleus with a concomitant decrease in type 1 fibers and a relative rise in the number of very small diameter fibers. Summary The effects of various cytoskeletal disrupting agents (cholchicine, oryzalin, trifluralin, taxol, cytochalasins B and D) on microtubules, microfilaments and wall microfibril deposition were monitored in developing cotton fibers, using immunocytochemical and fluorescence techniques. Treatment with 10–4 M colchicine, 10–6 M trifluralin or 10–6 M oryzalin resulted in a reduction in the number of microtubules, however, the drug-stable microtubules still appear to influence wall deposition. Treatment with 10–5 M taxol increased the numbers of microtubules present within 15 minutes of application. New microtubules were aligned parallel to the existing ones, however, some evidence of random arrays was observed. Microtubules stabilized with taxol appeared to function in wall organization but do not undergo normal re-orientations during development. Microtubule disrupting agent had no detectable affect on the microfilament population. Exposure to either 4×10–5 M cytochalasin B or 2×10–6M cytochalasin D resulted in a disruption of microfilaments and a re-organization of microtubule arrays. Treatment with either cytochalasin caused a premature shift in the orientation of microtubules in young fibers, whereas in older fibers the microtubule arrays became randomly organized. These observations indicate that microtubule populations during interphase are heterogeneous, differing at least in their susceptibility to disruption by depolymerizing agents. Changes in microtubule orientation (induced by cytochalasin) indicate that microfilaments may be involved in regulating microtubule orientation during development. 相似文献
