Primary production in Rattlesnake Springs,a cold desert spring-stream

Primary productivity and respiration were measured in Rattlesnake Springs, Washington, using the upstream-downstream diel pH-CO₂ curve and harvest methods.Daily P_g and P_n rates averaged 8.7 and 0.9, 0.6 and 0.3, and 9.3 and 1.2 g C m^–2 d^–1 for periphyton, watercress, and total community, respectively. Average photosynthetic efficiencies (%, P _n Lt^–1) were approximately 0.22 and 0.07 for periphyton and watercress, respectively. Annual community P_g was 2 700 g C m^–2 a^–1 and was highest for periphyton (2 526 g C m^–2 a^–1). Periphyton P_n (356 g C m^–2 a^–1) exceeded that of watercress (87 g C m^–2 a^–1). Community R was 2 257 g C m^–2 a^–1, and was highest for periphyton (2 170 g C m² a^–1).Desert streams appear to be enigmas in terms of their relationship between autotrophy and heterotrophy and their ability to be net importers or exporters of organic matter. The fact that they can be autotrophic and net importers of organic matter is probably related to the characteristic flash-flooding of desert streams, and emphasizes the necessity of examining these systems over more than a single annual cycle.     

Degradation of glucosinolates of Nasturtium officinale seeds

Nasturtium officinale contains four glucosinolates, the major representative being 2-phenethylglucosinolate. On autolysis of seeds or leaves, isothiocyanates were the main products of glucosinolate degradation but no thiocyanate was detected. The application of heat during extraction caused an increase in nitrile formation to dominance over isothiocyanates. A (benzyl) thiocyanate-forming extract of Lepidium sativum seeds did not provoke generation of any thiocyanate from glucosinolates of N. officinale (or Barbarea praecox), but it did impose accentuated nitrile-forming properties on the systems. The conclusion is reached that some glucosinolate-containing Cruciferae are predominantly nitrile-producing and some predominantly isothiocyanate-producing, all other factors being constant.     

Investigation of Brassica oleracea and Nasturtium officinale seeds for the presence of epithiospecifier protein

Cabbage seeds contain 5 glucosinolates and on autolysis produce, in particular, 1-cyano-2-3-epithiopropane. Watercress seeds contain 4 glucosinolates, but none capable of forming a cyanoepithioalkane. Cabbage exhibited behaviour commensurate with possession of an epithiospecifier protein (ESP) whilst watercress did not show any such activity.

The hydroalcoholic extract of watercress attenuates protein oxidation,oxidative stress,and liver damage after bile duct ligation in rats

Cholestatic liver disease is recognized by extreme collagen formation and deposition, which is mediated by free radicals. The aim of the current study was to investigate the probable hepatoprotective effects of hydroalcoholic extract of watercress (WC) against oxidative stress and liver injury in bile duct ligation (BDL)- induced cholestatic rats. A total of 32 male Wistar rats were divided into four groups; sham control (SC), BDL, SC + hydroalcoholic extract of WC and BDL + hydroalcoholic extract of WC. WC-treated rats received daily WC 500 mg/kg/day for 10 days. Biochemical tests, hepatic oxidative stress markers, and antioxidant enzymes activity were estimated. Further, liver hydroxyproline content was assayed and histological analysis was made. The BDL model markedly elevated the protein carbonyl (PCO) and hydroxyproline contents and decreased the glutathione peroxidase (GPx) activity. Hydroalcoholic extract of WC significantly decreased the surge in liver PCO and hydroxyproline levels and increased the reduced GPx enzyme activity contents in the hepatic tissue. As determined by hematoxylin and eosin staining, BDL considerably induced hepatocyte necrosis. Moreover, these changes were significantly attenuated by the hydroalcoholic extract of WC treatment. Our data indicate that the hydroalcoholic extract of WC extract attenuated liver damage in BDL rats by decreasing the hydroxyproline content and histopathological indexes. Also, it reduced oxidative stress by preventing the hepatic protein oxidation and enhancing the activity of the GPx enzyme via antioxidative effect and free-radical scavenging. Our findings suggest that hydroalcoholic extract of WC could be a beneficial new curative agent for cholestatic liver damage.     

Role of ethylene in senescence of watercress leaves

Detached watercress leaves showed a rapid senescence rate as compared with other herbs. It was therefore of interest to investigate the role of ethylene in the rapid senescence of watercress leaves, and So estimate the efficacy of various inhibitors of elhylene synthesis (aminoethoxyvinylglycine, AVG) and action (CO₂, Ag⁺) in retarding senescence processes. The progress of senescence in watercress bunches (leaves attached to cut stems) and in detached leaves was estimated by measuring the rate of chlorophyll (Chl) loss, proteolysis and lipid oxidation. Evidence is presented showing that application of 11% CO₂ to watercress bunches in a flow-through system had a long-lasting effect on senescence, exhibited by highly efficient retardation of all the senescence processes tested. On the other hand, application of AVG (O.1 m M ) or Ag-(30 μ M ) to detached leaves affected Chl loss much more than prciteolysis. These results suggest that the senescence-retarding activity of CO₂ cannot be attributed solely to its action as an anli-ethylene agent and that not all senescence-associated processes are regulated by ethylene.
