Appropriate final disposal of sewage sludge (SS) generated by wastewater treatment plants (WWTP) has been considered a serious environmental problem, but also a viable alternative to be applied in agriculture, once SS is rich in organic matter and nutrients. However, SS can be a source of contamination of several toxic agents. Therefore, its use in agriculture requires special care to avoid possible damage to the environment and exposed organisms. Detoxification of toxic wastes can be performed using the monitored natural attenuation, which involves biological, physical and chemical processes that frequently occur in the environment. This study aimed to assess the feasibility of decontaminating SS after different periods of monitored natural attenuation. To this end, samples of SS and associations of soil/SS with proportions of 10, 25 and 50% SS were buried for 0, 2, 6 and 12 months in holes prepared in a place free of contamination. Allium cepa was used as an indicator to assess the efficiency of the natural attenuation process. According to chemical analysis, the SS samples presented a high concentration of m- and p-cresol, especially for samples analyzed after 0 or 2 months of natural attenuation. The microorganisms present in the SS belonged to 17 different genera of bacteria, which varied in the microbial composition among samples. Both, raw SS and aqueous SS extracts induced DNA damage in A. cepa, even when associated with soil. However, this effect was observed to decline during the attenuation period, although significant effects were detected for the highest tested concentration (100% SS) even at the end of this process. These results thus indicated the necessity of applying a stabilization process associating SS and soil for a period of at least 12 months and showed that the studied raw SS is not a viable material for use as a soil reconditioner, even after natural attenuation. A. cepa test proved to be a useful tool to assess the efficiency of SS detoxification process. Therefore, we suggest that the application of SS in agriculture should be approached with caution and that the SS must be previously submitted to methodologies that evaluate its toxic potential. 相似文献

Summary The presence of house dust mites and storage mites in dumpsters was investigated in 3 different areas of Venice hinterland. The aim of this study was to find a relationship between some reported respiratory symptoms among 6 workers who were responsible for moving the dumpsters to the truck and the bio-aerosol released from such operation. These symptoms were closely related to the work and after allergological evaluation we found sensitisation to house dust mites in all 6 employees. The mine exposure in the workplace was assessed by a standardized sampling and analysis of dust obtained after brushing the inside surfaces of dumpsters. In 50% of the specimens (10/20) we found mites belonging to the following families: Pyroglyphidae (Dermatophagoides spp.), Acaridae (Acarus siro) and a lower amount of Cheyletidae (Cheyletus spp.). An indirect test (guanine test) was also performed and gave positivity in 16 dust samples (80%). The insides of dumpsters showed to be an optimal environment for mites survival and reproduction because of cracks and grooves on the walls, the high humidity level and the presence of mould. These mites probably come from dwelling places and other environments (markets, slaughters-houses, farms, etc.). Results are presented from a pilot scale (4·3 m3) upflow anaerobic filter for the treatment of the wastewater from ice-cream manufacture. The reactor was completely mixed by gas production but the solids or sludge held within the reactor were shown to be affected by the liquid velocities. The reactor was subject to a number of organic and hydraulic shocks and this reduced the consistency of COD removal. Daily loading rates varied from 0 to 18 kg COD/m3/day but with an average load of 5·5 kg/m3/day the mean COD removal was 70%. This was compared with previous work and shown to be a typical performance for an anaerobic filter. Alkalinity and carboxylic acid data are also presented and were within the normal, stable, operating range. Previous research on the anaerobic treatment of industrial effluents has shown alkalinity to be the most important factor controlling reliability. 相似文献

The present study describes a defined culturetechnique for the fairy shrimp, Streptocephalusdichotomus. It emphasizes reclamation of low-cost organiclive-stock waste(cow-dung), lime powder, and urea. These compounds wereused to enrich algal and diatom populations in themedium. These algae and diatoms were fed to filter feedingfairy shrimps to yield anostracanbiomass. The removal of toluene from waste gas was studied in a trickling biofilter. A high level of water recirculation (4.7 m h–1) was maintained in order to keep the liquid phase concentration constant and to achieve a high degree of wetting. For loads in the range from 6 to 150 g m–3 h–1 the maximum volumetric removal rate (elimination capacity) was 35±10 g m–3 h–1, corresponding to a zero order removal rate of 0.11±0.03 g m–2 h–1 per unit of nominal surface area. The surface removal was zero order above the liquid phase concentrations of approximately 1.0 g m–3, corresponding to inlet gas concentrations above 0.7–0.8 g m–3. Below this concentration the surface removal was roughly of first order. The magnitude of the first order surface removal rate constant, k1A
, was estimated to be 0.08–0.27 m h–1 (k1A
a=24–86 h–1). Near-equilibrium conditions existed in the gas effluent, so mass transfer from gas to liquid was obviously relatively fast compared to the biological degradation. An analytical model based on a constant liquid phase concentration through the trickling filter column predicts the effluent gas concentration and the liquid phase concentration for a first and a zero order surface removal. The experimental results were in reasonable agreement with a very simple model valid for conditions with an overall removal governed by the biological degradation and independent of the gas/liquid mass transfer. The overall liquid mass transfer coefficient, KLa, was found to be a factor 6 higher in the system with biofilm compared to the system without. The difference may be explained by: 1. Difference in the wetting of the packing material, 2. Mass transfer occurring directly from the gas phase to the biofilm, and 3. Enlarged contact area between the gas phase and the biofilm due to a rough biofilm surface. 相似文献
