Bioventing soils contaminated with petroleum hydrocarbons   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4  
Summary Bioventing combines the capabilities of soil venting and enhanced bioremediation to cost-effectively remove light and middle distillate hydrocarbons from vadose zone soils and the groundwater table. Soil venting removes the more volatile fuel components from unsaturated soil and promotes aerobic biodegradation by driving large volumes of air into the subsurface. In theory, air is several thousand times more effective than water in penetrating and aerating fuel-saturated and low permeability soil horizons. Aerobic microbial degradation can mitigate both residual and vapor phase hydrocarbon concentrations. Soil venting is being evaluated at a number of U.S. military sites contaminated with middle distillate fuels to determine its potential to stimulate in situ aerobic biodegradation and to develop techniques to promote in situ vapor phase degradation. In situ respirometric evaluations and field pilot studies at sites with varying soil conditions indicate that bioventing is a cost-effective method to treat soils contaminated with jet fuels and diesel.  相似文献

The effects of barotrauma on the short-term mortality and physical condition of Australian bass Macquaria novemaculeata were investigated after being: (1) conventionally angled and released during two tournaments in deep impoundments and (2) released untreated or subjected to venting or recompression during a manipulative experiment. All fish were released into two 20 m deep bathy-cages and monitored for 3 days. Of 238 M. novemaculeata angled during the tournaments, 43 (18·1%) had clinical signs of barotrauma or were vented and five of these later died (11·6% mortality). Catch histories varied significantly between both barotrauma and non-barotrauma fish and tournaments, but only hook ingestion significantly influenced mortality (P < 0·05). During the manipulative experiment, venting significantly influenced mortality (13·3%) compared to no treatment or recompression (no deaths). Magnetic resonance images and dissections of barotrauma fish indicated large variation among clinical signs. On the basis of these results, wherever possible M. novemaculeata suffering barotrauma should be immediately released with no treatment. Fish that are unable to resubmerge should be recompressed, while those held in live wells and released in shallow water should be vented.  相似文献

The efficacy of cleanup methods in reducing gasoline contamination at spill sites is typically determined by measuring benzene, toluene, xylene (BTX), and total petroleum hydrocarbon (TPH) concentrations in soil samples. Although these values may provide a direct measurement of soil contamination, they may not be indicative of what is transferred to percolating water. This study addresses this issue by measuring TPH, toluene, m‐ and p‐xylene, and naphthalene levels in gasoline‐contaminated soil columns before and after forced‐air venting and relating these values to the aqueous‐phase concentrations measured when water is percolated through the same columns.

Sandy soils with and without organic matter were packed into glass columns. The soils were brought to residual water and residual gasoline saturations by applying a vacuum to a ceramic pressure plate at the column bottom. Venting was performed by passing clean, moist air through the columns. The columns were subsequently leached under unsaturated conditions.

Soil samples were taken from the bottom of the columns upon completion of the venting or leaching phases of the experiments. Toluene, m‐ and p‐xylene, naphthalene, and TPH values were measured in soil samples extracted with either freon or methanol. Aqueous phase concentrations of these compounds were predicted using measured soil concentrations and either Raoult's law or organic matter‐water and fuel‐water partitioning theory (Boyd and Sun, 1990). The predicted results were compared with measured leachate concentrations from the same columns.

Mole fractions estimated from soil concentrations and TPH values used in Raoult's law gave good predictions of aqueous phase concentrations for compounds that had a high mole fraction in the residual nonaqueous phase liquid (NAPL). For compounds at low concentrations in the residual NAPL, an approach using a distribution coefficient that accounted for both the organic matter and residual NAPL in the soil provided better estimates than those based on Raoult's law.  相似文献

A methane-derived carbonate crust was collected from the recently discovered NIOZ mud volcano in the Sorokin Trough, NE Black Sea during the 11th Training-through-Research cruise of the R/V Professor Logachev. Among several specific bacterial and archaeal membrane lipids present in this crust, two novel macrocyclic diphytanyl glycerol diethers, containing one or two cyclopentane rings, were detected. Their structures were tentatively identified based on the interpretation of mass spectra, comparison with previously reported mass spectral data, and a hydrogenation experiment. This macrocyclic type of archaeal core membrane diether lipid has so far been identified only in the deep-sea hydrothermal vent methanogen Methanococcus jannaschii. Here, we provide the first evidence that these macrocyclic diethers can also contain internal cyclopentane rings. The molecular structure of the novel diethers resembles that of dibiphytanyl tetraethers in which biphytane chains, containing one and two pentacyclic rings, also occur. Such tetraethers were abundant in the crust. Compound-specific isotope measurements revealed delta13C values of -104 to -111/1000 for these new archaeal lipids, indicating that they are derived from methanotrophic archaea acting within anaerobic methane-oxidizing consortia, which subsequently induce authigenic carbonate formation.  相似文献
