Obligate neotenic salamanders die if forced to metamorphose. We suggest that this can be explained by assuming: 1) their “excess” DNA is “junk” DNA; 2) the “adult” specifying portion of the DNA becomes junk DNA and is available for repeated duplication. This suggests a “new” junk DNA molecular clock. We obtain remarkable agreement in “predicting” the amount of DNA per nucleus in present day non-obligate neotene salamanders from this molecular clock. These observatons are consistent with the idea that the development of these animals is describable in terms of differentiation trees whose branches (gene cascades) corresponding to adult somatic tissues accumulate deleterious mutations over evolutionary time. We show that the amount of DNA per nucleus increases linearly with the phylogenetic age of salamander families. The lack of constraints by natural selection, on unused adult branches, may account for the large amount of so-called “junk DNA” in obligate neotenic salamanders. The effects of this excess DNA, via increased cell size, suggest a positive feedback, ecophysiological explanation for such junk DNA: adaptation to cool water environments is enhanced by the lower metabolism associated with more DNA, larger cells and slower developmental time.  相似文献

The repartition and fate of glycogen β has been followed during progesterone-induced maturation of amphibian oocytes. The use of specific staining, both at the cytological and ultrastructural level, demonstrates that glycogen tends to be extruded from the oocyte during maturation of the urodeles Pleurodeles waltlii and Ambystoma mexicanum. No such effect of the hormone is observed in Xenopus laevis, where only a slight centrifuge migration of the glycogen could be recorded. Stacks of annulate lamellae increase during the early phase of in vitro progesterone-induced maturation (2 to 9 hours after progesterone application). After germinal vesicle breakdown (about 12 hours after beginning the progesterone treatment) annulate lamellae have disappeared and numerous masses of vesicles are present in the cytoplasm of Pleurodeles and Ambystoma matured oocytes. We never observed any close relation between the annulate lamellae and these vesicles.  相似文献

Summary The characteristics of Cl movement across luminal and basolateral membranes ofAmphiuma intestinal absorptive cells were studied using Cl-sensitive microelectrodes and tracer36Cl techniques. Intracellular Cl activity (a Cl i ) was unchanged when serosal Cl was replaced; when luminal Cl was replaced cell Cl was rapidly lost. Accordingly, the steady statea Cl i could be varied by changing the luminal [Cl]. As luminal [Cl] was raised from 1 to 86mM,a Cl i rose in a linear manner, the mucosal membrane hyperpolarized, and the transepithelial voltage became serosa negative. In contrast, the rate of Cl transport from the cell into the serosal medium, measured as the SITS-inhibitable portion of the Cl absorptive flux, attained a maximum whena Cl i reached an apparent value of 17mm, indicating the presence of a saturable, serosal transport step. The stilbeneinsensitive absorptive flux was linear with luminal [Cl], suggestive of a paracellular route of movement. Intracellulara Cl was near electrochemical equilibrium at all but the lowest values of luminal [Cl] after interference produced by other anions was taken into account.a Cl i was unaffected by Na replacement, removal of medium K, or elevation of medium HCO 3 . Mucosae labeled with36Cl lost isotope into both luminal and serosal media at the same rate and from compartments of equal capacity. Lowering luminal [Cl] or addition of theophylline enhanced luminal Cl efflux. It is concluded that a conductive Cl leak pathway is present in the luminal membrane. Serosal transfer is by a saturable, stilbene-inhibitable pathway. Luminal Cl entry appears to be passive, but an electrogenic uptake cannot be discounted.  相似文献

Why and how organisms differ in life‐history strategies across their range is a long‐standing topic of interest to evolutionary ecologists. Although many studies have addressed this issue for several life‐history traits, such as body size and clutch size, very few have been made for some others traits, including longevity. In the present study, we performed a comparative study aiming to develop general patterns of geographical variation in longevity of urodele and anuran amphibians using published information on demographic age derived from skeletochronology. We conducted within‐species meta‐analyses using datasets of two (ten urodele and 12 anuran species) and multiple (two urodele and nine anuran species) spatially‐separated populations and found that maturation, mean, and maximum age all increased with altitude but not with latitude in each sex of both amphibian groups. This geographical pattern held true across 33 urodele and 86 anuran species at common body sizes, independent of phylogeny. It is likely that metabolic rate, reproductive investment, and mortality risk, which are the key factors that affect longevity as suggested by ageing theory, vary systemically along altitudinal gradients but not along latitudinal gradients. The FERTILE experiment was twice performed onboard the Mir space station during the Cassiopée and Pégase French space missions. The goal was to analyze the effects of microgravity on fertilization and embryonic development, and then on further development on the ground in the amphibian Pleurodeles waltl. The present paper reports development that occurred in the laboratory after landing. Recovered on the ground at the hatching stage, young larvae reared at room temperature underwent metamorphosis and became adults without obvious abnormalities. Of particular interest was the rearing temperature that induced a delayed metamorphosis for animals from the Cassiopée space mission, but not for animals from the Pégase mission. The rate of development and the morphology were analogous in these animals and in ground controls reared in a similar annual period. Analysis of offspring was performed using these animals. Males born in space were first mated with control ground-born females and then with females born in space. The mating gave progeny that developed normally. Depending on the methods used and on the limits of the analyses, the results clearly demonstrated that animals born in space were able to live and reproduce after return to the ground.  相似文献

Many salamanders locomote in aquatic and terrestrial environments. During swimming, body propulsion is solely produced by the axial musculature generating lateral undulations of the trunk and tail. During terrestrial locomotion, the trunk is oscillated laterally in a standing wave, and body propulsion is achieved by concerted trunk and limb muscle action. The goal of this study was to increase our knowledge of the functional morphology of the tetrapod trunk. We investigated the muscle‐fiber‐type distribution and the anatomical cross‐sectional area of all perivertebral muscles in Ambystoma tigrinum and A. maculatum. Muscle‐fiber‐type composition was determined in serial cross‐sections based on m‐ATPase activity. Five different body segments were investigated to test for cranio‐caudal changes along the trunk. The overall fiber‐type distribution was very similar between the species, but A. tigrinum had relatively larger muscles than A. maculatum, which may be related to its digging behavior. None of the perivertebral muscles possessed a homogeneous fiber‐type composition. The M. interspinalis showed a distinct layered organization and may function to ensure the integrity of the spine (local stabilization). The M. dorsalis trunci exhibited the plesiomorphic pattern for notochordates in having a distinct superficial layer of red and intermediate fibers, which covered the central white fibers; therefore, it is suggested to function as a mobilizer and a stabilizer of the trunk, but, may also be involved in modulating body stiffness. Similarly, the M. subvertebralis showed clear regionalizations, implying functional subunits that can stabilize and mobilize the trunk as well as modulate of body stiffness. Cranio‐caudally, neither the fiber‐type composition nor the a‐csa changed dramatically, possibly reflecting the need to perform well in both aquatic and terrestrial habitats. J. Limb regeneration is a complex yet fascinating process observed to some extent in many animal species, though seen in its entirety in urodele amphibians. Accomplished by formation of a morphologically uniform intermediate, the blastema, scientists have long attempted to define the cellular constituents that enable regrowth of a functional appendage. Today, we know that the blastema consists of a variety of multipotent progenitor cells originating from a variety of tissues, and which contribute to limb tissue regeneration in a lineage-restricted manner. By continuing to dissect the role of stem cells in limb regeneration, we can hope to one day modulate the human response to limb amputation and facilitate regrowth of a working replacement.  相似文献

Chondrogenesis and ossification of the lissamphibian pectoral girdle   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Knowledge of amphibian shoulder development is requisite for further understanding of gnathostome pectoral girdle evolution. Fish and amniotes share few pectoral girdle elements, but modern amphibians exhibit a unique combination of traits that bridge the morphological gap between these two groups. I analyzed patterns of chondrogenesis, ossification, and bone histology of the pectoral girdles of two anuran species (Xenopus laevis and Bombina orientalis) and two urodele species (Ambystoma mexicanum and Desmognathus aeneus) to provide new insight into the evolution of the tetrapod pectoral girdle. Comparisons reveal the following: 1) variation in the pattern of chondrogenesis among the anuran species analyzed correlates to variation in adult pectoral girdle morphology; 2) morphologically similar pectoral skeletons do not necessarily have similar patterns of bone histology; and 3) the urodele and anuran pectoral girdles included herein share a common morphology despite differences in patterns of chondrogenesis.  相似文献
