Mate recognition for the leafhopper Graminella nigrifrons(Forbes) occurs when a male spontaneously emits a multisectional vibrational calling song to which females respond by emitting simple pulses. Significant differences were found among males in the duration, number of chirps, and chirp rate within sections of the song and the total song. Repeatability (proportion of total variation due to differences among males) of call features ranged from very low (0.04 for total chirps in song) to high (0.67 for section 3 chirp rate). However, song modification and playback experiments revealed that the variation in the measured song features was not important in determining whether a female will respond. Rather, female response depended only on the presence of two of the three types of pulses which comprise a chirp. These essential pulses were found within chirps of all call sections that contain chirps. Manipulation of chirp rates from 0.58 to 2.70 times the normal rate did not affect female response, nor did changing the period of silence between the essential pulse types from 0.25 to 1.75 times the normal period. These results suggest that components of the male calling song function in mate recognition but are not used by females to discriminate among conspecific males.  相似文献

Aerial dispersal of the phytoseiid Metaseiulus occidentalis (Nesbitt) was evaluated as a component in managing pesticide-resistant populations established in California almond orchards. Peak dispersal occurred in late July and early August during 1982 and 1983. Most predators (and spider mites) left the orchards on the prevailing winds from the northwest. Within the orchard, the prevailing winds had less influence, and dispersal was usually random. Both spider mites and predators dispersed randomly with regard to height from the almond trees, but data obtained during one 24-h interval suggest they do not disperse randomly throughout the day. Most aerial movements occurred between 16–22 h when relative humidity and wind speeds increased and temperatures decreased. Spider mites and predators were trapped on panels located 200 m from the orchard. A survey of carbaryl resistance levels in M. occidentalis collected from almond orchards surrounding the release sites indicates that carbaryl-resistant M. occidentalis dispersed at least 800 m between 1981–83. However, growers wishing to use the resistant strains should release them in their orchards as natural dispersal appears to be too slow. Migration of native M. occidentalis into the release sites appeared to be sufficiently rare that dilution of carbaryl-resistant populations was minimal during a 2–4 year period.

Callus cultures of Torenia fournieri Compacta Blue were initiated on a modified Murashige and Skoog salt medium (MS) with 2.26 M 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid. Shoots were regenerated from these cultures using MS medium amended with 2.46 M indolebutyric acid and 8.88 M benzyladenine. These shoot cultures were subjected to two-spotted spidermite (Tetranychus urticae Koch.) and the greenhouse whitefly [Trialeurodes vaporariorum (Westwood)]. Pests were allowed to feed until such time that their populations started to decrease due to lack of food. The remaining live tissue of the Torenia was placed on MS medium amended with 2.28 M zeatin to induce new adventitious shoots and plantlets. Newly regenerated plantlets were acclimated to greenhouse conditions and evaluated for resistance to the pest to which they were subjected in vitro. Highly significant differences in pest numbers were found in somaclones for both the two-spotted spidermite and greenhouse whitefly when compared to control plants. A wide range of variability was observed among the somaclonal population. There were significantly fewer mite eggs laid on plants regenerated from in vitro cultures screened with two-spotted spidermites than on seed sown controls. Regenerants from cultures screened with whiteflies in vitro had fewer eggs, immatures and live adults than controls.Abbreviations BA benzyladenine - IBA indolebutyric acid - 2,4-d 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid - MS Murashige and Skoog salt medium Storrs Agricultural Research Station Scientific Publication 1641.  相似文献

Comparative transmission by leafhoppers of three tungro isolates obtained from the Philippines, India and Malaysia, and of an infectious clone of the Philippine isolate of rice tungro bacilliform virus (RTBV) by agroinoculation, was conducted on 12 rice cultivars. The symptoms, including height of inoculated plants were recorded and the efficiency of RTBV and rice tungro spherical virus (RTSV) transmission was determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. In most cases, the reduction of height and leaf symptoms of plants infected with RTBV and/or RTSV by the three isolates were similar in any given cultivar. On cultivar ASD 7 , the Malaysian isolate showed more severe yellow orange leaf discolouration symptoms than the Indian isolate which in turn had more severe leaf discolouration than the Philippine isolate. On the other hand, cultivars ASD 7 and Ptb 18 produced the most severe yellow orange leaf discolouration when agroinoculated with an infectious RTBV clone of the Philippine isolate. There was some variation in the transmission profile of the two tungro viruses among the three isolates. However, there was no one clear set of characteristics by which one could use cultivars to distinguish isolates. The amount of viral DNA in agroinfected plants of cultivars Utri merah, Balimau putih, Utri Rajapan and ARC 11554 was low, while the amount was high in cultivars TN1, ASD7, Ptb 18 and TKM 6. There was high correlation between the amount of viral coat protein by ELISA and viral nucleic acid by DNA hybridisation on 10 agroinoculated rice cultivars; this might indicate that similar proportions of the total RTBV DNA are encapsidated in each cultivar.  相似文献

Abstract 1 Scaphoideus titanus Ball, a nearctic leafhopper introduced into Europe in the 1950s, is known to be the vector of the phytoplasma agent of flavescence dorée (FD), a persistent disease of grapevine. Knowledge of its dispersal patterns is thus very important to prevent disease outbreaks. 2 Yellow sticky traps were used to study the seasonal flight activity of S. titanus, its vertical flight, its movement outside the vineyard and the influence of plant density. Sticky traps of different colours (yellow, red, blue, and white) were also compared. The behaviour of males and females was tested for all those conditions. 3 Abundance was greater in normal than in low plant density conditions, and a positive relationship was found between number of plants per square metre and presence of S. titanus. Leafhoppers did not appear capable of spreading significantly outside a vineyard. Few individuals were trapped above the canopy. Red sticky traps caught more individuals than white, yellow or blue, with the latter showing a poor attractiveness. Sex ratio was almost always male biased. 4 Scaphoideus titanus is monophagous and appears incapable of great dispersal away from its host plant, and females are less likely to fly than males. Further studies on the influence of different factors on the behaviour of this leafhopper are suggested.  相似文献

The fairyfly Anagrus (Anagrus) japonicus Sahad (Hymenoptera: Mymaridae) is identified for the first time as an egg parasitoid of the okra leafhopper Amrasca (Sundapteryx) biguttula (Ishida) (Hemiptera: Cicadellidae) on Okinawa Island, Japan. Amrasca biguttula is a serious pest of okra, Abelmoschus esculentus (L.) Moench (Malvaceae), both in Okinawa and Bonin Islands. Female of A. japonicus is redescribed, and its previously unknown male is described, based on the reared specimens from Okinawa. Prior to this study, host associations of A. japonicus were unknown. Another species of Mymaridae, Arescon enocki (Subba Rao and Kaur), also emerged from eggs of A. biguttula on okra in Okinawa, albeit in much smaller numbers.  相似文献

Rice Resistance to Planthoppers and Leafhoppers   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
For over 50 years, host-plant resistance has been regarded as an efficient method to reduce yield losses to rice caused by delphacid and cicadelid hoppers. Already a number of resistant rice varieties have been developed and deployed throughout Asia. To date, over 70 hopper resistance genes have been identified in rice; however, less than 10 genes have been deliberately introduced to commercial rice varieties. Currently, due to recent brown planthopper (Nilaparvata lugens [Stål]) and whitebacked planthopper (Sogatella furcifera [Horvath]) outbreaks occurring at an unprecedented scale, researchers are working toward a second generation of resistant varieties using newly identified gene loci and applying new molecular breeding methods. This paper reviews advances in the identification of resistance genes and QTLs against hoppers in rice. It collates all published information on resistance loci and QTLs against the major rice planthoppers and leafhoppers and presents information on gene locations, genetic markers, differential varieties, and wild rice species as sources of resistance. The review indicates that, whereas progress in the identification of genes has been rapid, considerable tidying of the information is required, especially regarding gene nomenclature and resistance spectra. Furthermore, sound information on gene functioning is almost completely lacking. However, hopper responses to resistance mechanisms are likely to be similar because a single phenotyping technique has been applied by most national and international breeding programs during germplasm screening. The review classifies genes occurring at two chromosome regions associated with several identified resistance loci and highlights these (Chr4S: BphR-R and Chr12L: BphR-R) as general stress response regions. The review calls for a greater diversity of phenotyping methods to enhance the durability of resistant varieties developed using marker-aided selection and emphasizes a need to anticipate the development of virulent hopper populations in response to the field deployment of genes.  相似文献

The complete larval development of the shallow-water Caribbean porcellanid crab, Petrolisthes politus (Gray, 1831), is described and illustrated from specimens reared in the laboratory. Petrolisthes politus hatches as a prezoea, which persist for less than 90 minutes, and then molts through two subsequent zoeal stages, which are completed in 6 to 7 and 14 to 16 days, respectively, before the megalopal stage is reached. From a total of about 2000 zoeae that were cultured, only two reached the megalopal stage. The two megalopae survived for up to 5 days but did not molt to the first crab stage. The zoeae of P. politus are compared with those of Petrolisthes rufescens (Heller, 1861), Petrolisthes lamarckii (Leach, 1820), Petrolisthes carinipes (Heller, 1861), Petrolisthes coccineus (Owen 1839) and Petrolisthes pubescens (Stimpson, 1858), which were hitherto the only species having bifid lateral spines on the telson of the first zoeal stage.  相似文献
