The phenology of the predatory wasp, Ancistrocerus gazella (Panzer), colonising artificial nests was studied over 3 years in seven Study Areas in or adjacent to mixed pome and stonefruit orchards in Otago, New Zealand. Each Study Area had three to four nest sites comprising groups of wooden blocks drilled with 6 mm diameter nest tubes 75–150 mm in length. The timing of nest tube colonisation was recorded by observing the presence of nest closures (mud plugs) and their subsequent opening during adult emergence. The nest tubes from some entire nest sites were dissected to determine the stages of development of the wasps and their subsequent emergence, and samples of nest tubes were dissected weekly from a range of nest sites to determine changes in prey composition over the season. A. gazella was found to be primarily bivoltine, but part of each generation entered diapause and a small number of second generation wasps also emerged before winter in warm sites. The adult foraging of each generation was well synchronised with late larval instars of the two generations of three pest leafroller species. However, very low numbers of leafroller larvae were collected because A. gazella was highly polyphagous, predominantly exploiting a sequence of other lepidopterous species. It was concluded that management of A. gazella for leafroller control would be uneconomic but it provides a useful component of the natural enemy complex of pest leafroller species.

1. Insect phenology is driven by local climate variables, most notably temperature. Increased warming has been linked to advancements in critical phenophases such as the spring flight of reproductive adults in the mid‐Atlantic region of the U.S.A. 2. Local climate is governed by the fluctuations of large‐scale climate oscillations. In the northern hemisphere, both the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) and the Arctic Oscillation (AO) control the local autumn and winter severity. Low NAO and AO indices are associated with colder autumns and winters, which can delay spring phenology. 3. In this study, 36 years of data from experimental fruit orchards in Biglerville, Pennsylvania, were used to run partial least‐squares regressions in order to determine the climate variables related to the spring phenology of five tortricid pest species. 4. The phenology of the tortricid pests did not advance, even though there was evidence of warming at the research site. 5. Spring temperatures were found to be the most significant climate variables in determining the timing of the spring flights. However, autumn–winter temperatures were also important. 6. For the NAO and the AO, it was found that these oscillations affected the tortricid moths by influencing autumn–winter conditions. The oscillations of the NAO and AO can obscure long‐term changes in phenology. 7. These findings suggest that the inclusion of large‐scale climate oscillations can provide important insights into how climate conditions can influence insect phenology, and presents an opportunity for improving the ability to forecast spring emergence.

Sparganocosma docsturnerorum Brown, new genus and new species, is described and illustrated from Área de Conservación (ACG) in northwestern Costa Rica. The new genus shares a long, crescent- or ribbon-shaped signum in the corpus bursae of the female genitalia with Aesiocopa Zeller, 1877, Amorbia Clemens, 1860, Amorbimorpha Kruse, 2011, Coelostathma Clemens, 1860, Lambertiodes Diakonoff, 1959, Paramorbia Powell & Lambert, 1986, Rhynchophyllus Meyrick, 1932, Sparganopseustis Powell & Lambert, 1986, Sparganothina Powell, 1986, and Sparganothoides Lambert & Powell, 1986. Putative autapomorphies for Sparganocosma include the extremely short uncus; the smooth (unspined) transtilla; and the upturned, free, distal rod of the sacculus. Adults of Sparganocosma docsturnerorum have been reared numerous times (>50) from larvae collected feeding on rain forest Asplundia utilis (Oerst.) Harling and Asplundia microphylla (Oerst.) Harling (Cyclanthaceae) at intermediate elevations (375–500 m) in ACG. Whereas most Sparganothini are generalists, typically feeding on two or more plant families, Sparganocosma docsturnerorum appears to be a specialist on Asplundia, at least in ACG. The solitary parasitoid wasp Sphelodon wardae Godoy & Gauld (Ichneumonidae; Banchinae) has been reared only from the larvae of Sparganocosma docsturnerorum.

The Insect Growth Regulators with juvenile hormone activity, fenoxycarb and epofenonane, were applied either to separate apple trees, which were artificially inoculated with Adoxophyes orana (F.v.R.) and Pandemis heparana (Denn. & Schiff.), or in apple orchards infested with several naturally occurring leafroller species. The susceptibility of leafrollers to fenoxycarb was very high and the foliar residue remained active for at least 4 weeks. The leafroller parasites Apanteles ater (Ratzeburg) and Colpoclypeus florus (Walker), during their development in or on the host, appeared to be less susceptible to both epofenonane and fenoxycarb than the host itself.

Insecticide‐based management programmes targeting codling moth, Cydia pomonella L. (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae: Olethreutinae), in apple orchards in southern France have incurred increasing levels of fruit injury in recent years. An alternative programme incorporating the use of exclusion netting named Alt'carpo has been developed. This study aimed at studying its efficiency and gaining more insight into its mode of action. This was achieved through laboratory and field behavioural tests and observations in a network of commercial orchards in southern France. The moths were able to lay eggs through the nets and escape from net cages in the laboratory. Male moths released in the netted rows were poorly recaptured using sexual pheromone trapping, whereas over 20% of the released males were recaptured in unprotected rows. The netting reduced fruit injury by up to 91% compared to the unprotected rows in the experimental orchard. The efficacy of this netting was even higher in commercial orchards in which fruit injury did not exceed 0.1% without any application of specific insecticide. These results lead us to assume that netting alters the reproduction of the pest, mainly by preventing it from flying over the canopy to find mates.
