The autoregulation of testicular luteinizing hormone (LH) receptors was studied in hypogonadal (hpg/hpg) and normal mice. The basal concentration of LH receptors was more than three-fold higher in hpg/hpg than in normal mice. After injection of hCG, hpg/hpg mice showed a decrease in LH receptor levels which was not observed in normal mice. Plasma testosterone was undetectable in hpg/hpg mice, even after treatment with a single dose of hCG. Plasma prolactin levels were higher in hpg/hpg than in normal mice. The increase in basal LH receptor levels is thought to be due to a compensatory mechanism in which elevated prolactin could play a role. The differences between hpg/hpg and normal mice in the autoregulation of LH receptors observed could be due to the hypersensitivity of the physiologically immature testis in hpg/hpg mice to the action of hCG, to gonadotropin deficiency, particularly during the earlier stages of development, or to a direct effect of the hpg locus on the metabolism of LH receptors. These studies were supported by NIH Grants HD 12642 and HD 12671 (AB) and Grant CA-24145 (WGB). 相似文献

Previous studies have shown that intradermally (ID) injected Brugia pahangi L3s migrate through various tissues and into the lymphatics of gerbils in a distinct pattern. Excretory/secretory products (ES) produced at the time of invasion of B. pahangi are likely to be important in this early migration phase of the parasite life cycle in their rodent host. Hence, early L3 ES was collected from 24 h in vitro cultures of B. pahangi L3 larvae and used in immunization experiments to investigate the effect of immunity to early L3 ES on worm migration, survival and development of B. pahangi. Immunization of gerbils with ES in RIBI adjuvant produced antibodies to numerous ES proteins eliciting a strong humoral response to ES and indirect fluorescent antibody (IFA) assay using anti-ES serum recognized the ES proteins on the surface of B. pahangi L3 larvae. Following ES immunization, gerbils were challenged either ID or intraperitoneally (IP) with 100 L3s of B. pahangi and euthanized at 3 or 106 days post inoculation (DPI). Immunization with early ES slowed the migration of ID inoculated L3 at 3 DPI and significantly altered the locations of adult worms at 106 DPI. Immunization did not induce protection in any treatment group. However, immunized animals had significantly fewer microfilariae per female worm suggesting the antigens in ES are important in microfilariae development or survival in the host. The number of lymphatic granulomas was also significantly reduced in ES immunized animals. It is important to note that microfilariae serve as a nidus in these granulomas. Our results shows immunization with early Brugia malayi L3 ES alters the worm migration, affects circulating microfilarial numbers and reduces lymphatic granulomas associated with B. pahangi infection in gerbils. 相似文献

The size of weapons and testes can be central to male reproductive success. Yet, the expression of these traits is often extremely variable. Studies are needed that take a more complete organism perspective, investigating the sources of variation in both traits simultaneously and using developmental conditions that mimic those in nature. In this study, we investigated the components of variation in weapon and testis sizes using the leaf‐footed cactus bug, Narnia femorata (Hemiptera: Coreidae) on three natural developmental diets. We show that the developmental diet has profound effects on both weapon and testis expression and scaling. Intriguingly, males in the medium‐quality diet express large weapons but have relatively tiny testes, suggesting complex allocation decisions. We also find that heritability, evolvability, and additive genetic variation are highest in the high‐quality diet for testis and body mass. This result suggests that these traits may have an enhanced ability to respond to selection during a small window of time each year when this diet is available. Taken together, these results illustrate that normal, seasonal fluctuations in the nutritional environment may play a large role in the expression of sexually selected traits and the ability of these traits to respond to selection. 相似文献

In bridging the knowledge gap on stress physiology of Nigerian indigenous chickens, this study investigated the effect of exogenous corticosterone (eCORT) as stress inducing agent on the testicular function and mating behavior of Nigerian indigenous cocks. Twenty-four (24) cocks and one hundred and forty four (144) hens (mating ratio of 1 cock: 6 hens) were grouped into four and assigned to each of the four eCORT treatments (0, 2, 4 and 6 mgeCORT/KgBW) daily for 14 days. Semen samples were collected on days 0, 7 and 14 and analyzed for semen volume (SV), progressive sperm motility (PSM), membrane integrity (MI) and sperm abnormality (SA). Mating behaviors were monitored on days 3, 5 and 8. Blood samples, for hormonal (Luteinizing Hormone (LH), Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH) Testosterone (TEST) and stress analysis (heterophil/lymphocyte ratio, H/L) were collected from brachial vein on days 7 and 14. On day 15, cocks were euthanized and testes harvested for histomorphometry. Data were analyzed using multivariate analysis, one–way ANOVA and Kruskal-Wallis tests all in SPSS 23. Administration of 4 mgeCORT/KgBW declined (P<0.05) PSM while 4 mgeCORT/KgBW and 6 mgeCORT/KgBW cocks had reduced (P<0.05) SV and MI with increased SA. Compared to baseline values, progressive sperm motility of cocks administered 6 mgeCORT for 7 and 14 days decreased (P<0.05) by 57.5% and 52.4%, respectively. Exogenous CORT had no significant (P>0.05) influence on the mating behaviors, H/L ratio, FSH and TEST. However, 2 mgeCORT/KgBW enhanced LH levels. Administration of eCORT did not affect the testicular epithelial height and seminiferous tubular diameter. In conclusion, optimal stress induced by eCORT impaired semen quality but with less impact on reproductive hormones, H/L and mating behaviors of intensively raised Nigerian indigenous cocks. 相似文献

The present study was designed to investigate the effects of zinc and/or melatonin deficiency on rat testes. A total of 24
adult male Sprague-Dawley rats were used in this study. The rats were divided into four groups of six rats each, as follows:
(I) controls, (II) zinc deficient, (III) pinealectomized, zinc normal, and (IV) pinealectomized, zinc deficient. The plasma
zinc levels in the control group were higher than in all the other groups (p<0.01), and those of the zinc-deficient groups II and IV were significantly lower than for group III (p<0.01). The melatonin levels in the controls were also significantly higher than for all other groups (p<0.01) There was no significant difference in sperm production between the controls and the group of animals that had no epiphysis.
A significant suppression was observed in the spermatogenetic activity of the zinc-deficient groups (p<0.01). The suppression was higher in group II than in group IV. These results indicate that testicular damage caused by zinc
deficiency may be reduced by melatonin deficiency. 相似文献

The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of radiofrequency radiation emitted from cellular phones on the lipid composition, malondialdehyde concentration, p53 immune reactivity, sperm count, morphology, histological structure of testes, and on rectal temperature of rats exposed to microwave radiation emitted from cellular phones. Sixteen Spraque-Dawley rats were separated into two groups of eight, sham exposed (control) and experimental. The rats were confined in plexiglas cages specially designed for this study, and cellular phones were placed 0.5 cm under the cages. For the experimental group, cellular phones were activated 20 min per day (7 days a week) for 1 month. For the control group, the cellular phones were placed beneath the cages for 20 min a day, but the phones were turned off. Rectal temperatures were measured weekly. For 250 mW radiated power, the whole body average SAR (rms) is 0.52 W/kg and 1 g averaged peak SAR (rms) is 3.13 W/kg. The Mann-Whitney U-test was used for statistical comparisons of groups. No statistically significant alteration in any of the endpoints was noted. This study found no evidence suggesting an adverse effect of cell phone exposure on measures of testicular function or structure. 相似文献

Externally fertilizing fishes are predicted to invest heavily in testes, because large numbers of sperm should be favoured by the high risk of sperm competition from sneaker males, and/or the dilution of ejaculates when shed into open water. Using museum specimens, we measured testes mass and body mass of 83 mature males, belonging to 21 genera of the family Syngnathidae (pipefishes and seahorses). In this family all species show paternal care, ranging in degree from eggs being attached to the skin of the male, to eggs being completely enclosed and nurtured within a brood pouch. The former, 'unprotected' group, is thought to have external fertilization, whereas in the latter, 'protected' group, males fertilize the eggs internally in their brood pouch. Smaller relative testes investment was thus predicted for genera that have protected compared with unprotected brood care. However, we found this not to be the case. Instead, all genera showed the same relationship between testes and body mass, regardless of brooding type. The possible implications of this surprising result are discussed, including the possibility that the mode of fertilization might have been misjudged for the pouchless syngnathids. © 2004 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2004, 83 , 369–376. 相似文献
