Macaques are similar to humans both physiologically and behaviorally. In South and Southeast Asia they are also synanthropic, ecologically associated with humans. Synanthropy with humans raises the possibility that macaques come into contact with anthropogenic toxicants, such as lead and mercury, and might be appropriate sentinels for human exposures to certain toxic materials. We measured lead (Pb) and mercury (Hg) levels and characterized the stable isotopic compositions of δ15N and δ13C in hair from three groups of free‐ranging macaques at the Swoyambhu temple in Kathmandhu, Nepal, an urban population that has abundant contact with humans. Hair lead levels were significantly higher among young macaques and differed among the three groups of macaques that were sampled. Hair Hg levels were low. No statistical association was found between stable isotopic compositions (δ15N and δ13C) and Pb and Hg levels. Our data did not find evidence that lead levels were associated with diet. We conclude that, in this population of macaques, behavioral and/or physiologic factors may play a significant role in determining exposure to lead. Chemical analysis of hair is a promising, noninvasive technique for determining exposure to toxic elements in free‐ranging nonhuman primates. KADEREIT, J. W., 1990. Some suggestions on the geographical origin of the central, west and north European synanthropic species of Papaver L . Papaver rhoeas, P. dubium subsp. dubium and subsp. lecoqii, P. argemone subsp. argemone and P. hybridum are considered to be introduced in central, western and northern Europe. An analysis of the geographical distribution of the closest relatives of these five taxa leads to hypotheses on their geographical origin. It is suggested that P. rhoeas originates from the eastern border of the Mediterranean, where it might have differentiated only under human influence. The origin of P. dubium subsp. lecoqii is suggested to lie in S.E. Europe or west Anatolia, and that of subsp. dubium in S.E. central Europe. Papaver argemone subsp. argemone might have differentiated from two related subspecies in west Anatolia. No suggestions can be made with respect to P. hybridum , which is taxonomically isolated. The assumptions necessary for hypotheses on the geographical origin of synanthropically widespread taxa are briefly discussed.  相似文献

Alien spider introductions to Europe supported by global trade   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0  
Global trade is permanently ongoing and increases its volume every year. In this study, the occurrence of 87 unintentionally introduced spider species alien to Europe is analysed. The analysis includes (1) the introduction potential of six different origin areas of the world according to trade volume, area size, and geographical distance; (2) the body size of native and alien species; and (3) occurrence in or at buildings (synanthropic) or in natural habitats. We found the eastern Palearctic as the most influencing origin area with 44 introduced spider species to Europe. The eastern Palearctic and the Indomalayan provided a significantly higher number of introductions than expected, whereas the Nearctic, Neotropical, and Afrotropical provided a significantly lower number of introduced species than expected. This can be explained with their lower trade volume, smaller area, larger geographical distance to Europe, and stronger climate differences to Europe. Comparing the body size of introduced and native European spider species of the same family, we found for Theridiidae significantly larger alien spiders and for all other tested families a trend to a larger body size of alien species compared to the native spiders. The family affiliation of alien spiders is the most important factor for synanthropic occurrence in Europe. On the base of a very conservative estimation of spider species introductions to Europe combined with possible effects of climate change, we predict for the near future a permanent increase in the number of alien spider species in Europe.  相似文献

The adaptation of nine species of mites that infest stored products for starch utilization was tested by (1) enzymatic analysis using feces and whole mite extracts, (2) biotests, and (3) inhibition experiments. Acarus siro, Aleuroglyphus ovatus, and Tyroborus lini were associated with the starch‐type substrates and maltose, with higher enzymatic activities observed in whole mite extracts. Lepidoglyphus destructor was associated with the same substrates but had higher activities in feces. Dermatophagoides farinae, Chortoglyphus arcuatus, and Caloglyphus redickorzevi were associated with sucrose. Tyrophagus putrescentiae and Carpoglyphus lactis had low or intermediate enzymatic activity on the tested substrates. Biotests on starch additive diets showed accelerated growth of species associated with the starch‐type substrates. The inhibitor acarbose suppressed starch hydrolysis and growth of the mites. We suggest that the species with higher starch hydrolytic activity in feces were more tolerant to acarbose, and α‐amylase and α‐glucosidase of synanthropic mites are suitable targets for inhibitor‐based strategies of mite control. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.  相似文献

1. Subfossil beetle remains from archaeological sites have proven invaluable for examining past living conditions, human activities, and their impacts on landscapes and ecosystems. 2. In Iceland, specific economic practices (e.g. land management and natural resource exploitation) and major historical events (i.e. colonisation, economic intensification and commercialisation, and urbanisation) have affected local environments and left recognisable traces in the beetle subfossil record. 3. Understanding the ecology of synanthropic beetles is crucial if they are to be employed in high‐resolution reconstructions of past lifeways and their ecological impacts, yet, because buildings' interiors are rarely the object of systematic entomological research, the ecological requirements of many such species are poorly understood. 4. A survey was conducted of live and dead beetle faunas from habitats that have so far been largely neglected by entomological research: stable manure and stored hay inside farm buildings, two key facets of a northern European pastoral economy. 5. The present results clarify the ecological requirements of some under‐studied synanthropic beetles and the processes by which their exoskeletons may become incorporated into the archaeological record while also producing new records of exotic species recently introduced to Iceland. 6. This paper provides crucial guidance for the interpretation of archaeological beetle assemblages and highlights the potential of further investigations of indoor insect faunas for clarifying the causes, processes, and ecological impacts of recent bio‐invasions.  相似文献

Microplate assays with 96 wells were optimized to screen proteolytic activities in mite homogenates. Whole-mite extracts of Acarus siro, Aleuroglyphus ovatus, Tyrophagus putrescentiae, Tyroborus lini, Carpoglyphus lactis, Lepidoglyphus destructor, and Dermatophagoides farinae exhibited non-specific proteolytic activity in buffers from pH 2 to 12, and three peaks of highest activity at pH 3, 5-6, and 10 were distinguished. The reducing agent Tris(2-carboxyethyl)phosphine hydrochloride decreased general proteolytic activity on azocasein at pH 5 and 6. The results obtained on two non-specific substrates, azocasein and azoalbumin, showed highly different ranks of the species at pH 5 and 6. Proteolytic activities toward N(α)-Benzoyl-D,L-arginine 4-nitroanilide hydrochloride, N-Succinyl-L-alanyl-L-alanyl-L-prolyl-L-phenylalanine 4-nitroanilide, N-Succinyl-L-alanyl-L-alanyl-L-alanine 4-nitroanilide, Benzyloxycarbonyl-L-arginine-L-arginyl 4-nitroanilide, and N-Methoxysuccinyl-L-alanyl-L-alanyl-L-prolyl-L-methionine 4-nitroanilide (MAAPMpNA) were highest at alkaline pH, but the activity toward MAAPMpNA was also high at pH 5 and 6. In contrast, N-Succinyl-L-alanyl-L-alanyl-L-phenylalanine 4-nitroanilide (AAPpNA) and L-arginyl 4-nitroanilide (ArgpNA) had the highest activity recorded at pH 6. The high activities observed on AAPpNA, ArgpNA, and MAAPMpNA at digestive pH suggest that enzymes present in these extracts could have the majority of proteolysis in the mite gut. Evidence of the presence of proteolytic activities on all tested substrates and in all the tested mite homogenates suggests that the proteolytic activities may contribute to allergenicity. Poor or undetected hydrolytic activities of mite extracts toward substrates for keratin and collagen at digestive pH underline the importance of ecological interactions between mites and microorganisms in the utilization of such substrates.  相似文献

The common Mediterranean ruderal thistleSilybum marianum is associated with nutrient-rich sites. Its wind-dispersed achenes possess an oily food body, that is attractive to harvester-ants. Following removal of the oily body, the achenes are deposited in the refuse zone together with rich organic material and soil removed from the nest; while in the nest the achenes are partly protected from fires. The thistle grows successfully in the nutrient-enriched refuse zone and thus dominates patches in the grassland. Preadaptations to live in association with harvester-ants enableS. marianum to occur also on marking stations of male gazelle, on cattle dung deposits, and in synanthropic ruderal habitats.  相似文献
