Using monogynous and polygynous colonies of the fire ant, Solenopsis invicta Buren, we developed methodology to determine which behavioural subcaste of workers was responsible for executing unfamiliar queens that were introduced to them. Separation of subcastes and introduction of queens to each of these separately was partly effective, but more accurate results were obtained by removing workers that were in the act of executing queens, marking them individually, and returning them to the colony. Their subsequent behaviour was then recorded to determine whether they behaved like nurses, reserves, or foragers. The results showed that foragers are dominant in execution behaviour and that all morphological subcastes (minors, medias, and majors) are involved. This methodology may be applied to other social insect species.
Résumé A l'aide de colonies monogynes de S. invicta Buren, nous avons testé la sensibilité de deux méthodes: Premièrement, nous avons isolé les trois sous-castes temporelles des ouvrières (nurses, réserves et fourrageuses) auxquelles nous avons introduit des reines étrangères. Nous avons trouvé que les fourrageuses étaient le groupe le plus agressif, exécutant un pourcentage élevé des reines qui leur étaient présentées. Le degré de physogastrie de la reine étrangère, sa colonie d'origine et la présence de couvain n'avaient pas d'effet visible sur sa destinée. La sensibilité de cette méthode était limitée par la difficulté d'une séparation complète des souscastes temporelles.Deuxièmement, nous avons capturé des ouvrières exécutant activement des reines étrangères, après marquage nous les avons remises dans leur colonie pour observations ultérieures. Nous avons remarqué que leur localisation dans le nid et leur comportement correspondaient aux séquences trouvées pour les fourrageuses bien plus qu'à celles des ouvrières réserves ou nurses. Cette méthode est plus sensible. Des mesures de la largeur de la capsule céphalique de ces ouvrières ont montré qu'aucune des sous-caste morphologiques (mineurs, moyennes et majeurs) étaient dominantes dans le comportement d'exécution. Nos résultats indiquent que la sensibilité des ouvrières à certaines phéromones de la reine et odeur de la colonie augmente avec leur âge.

In recessive trimolter (rt) mutants of the silkworm, Bombyx mori, that have four larval instars rather than five larval instars of normal B. mori, a decrease after a small increase in the hemolymph ecdysteroid titer during the early stages of the last (fourth) larval instar appeared to be a prerequisite for larvae to undergo precocious metamorphosis. The present study was carried out to investigate the possible mechanism underlying this decrease in the ecdysteroid titer. It was found that juvenile hormone (JH) biosynthetic activity of the corpora allata (CA) increased during the first day of the last larval instar, but its absolute JH biosynthesis activity was relatively lower compared to that of normal fourth-instar larvae in tetramolters. This lowered JH biosynthetic activity appeared to be related to a decrease in prothoracic gland ecdysteroidogenesis during the second day of the last instar, because hydroprene application prevented this decrease in prothoracic gland ecdysteroidogenesis, leading to the induction of a supernumerary larval molt. The in vitro incubation of prothoracic glands with hydroprene showed that hydroprene did not directly exert its action on prothoracicotropic hormone (PTTH) release. Further study showed that the application of hydroprene enhanced the competency of the glands to respond to PTTH. From these results, it was supposed that the lowered JH biosynthesis of the CA during the first day of last instar in rt mutants was related to decreased ecdysteroidogenesis in the prothoracic glands during the second day, thus playing a role in leading to precocious metamorphosis.  相似文献

The embryonic development of Daphnia galeata and D. hyalina (`Cladocera', Anomopoda, Daphniidae) has been investigated by observing living embryos removed from female brood pouches. The sequence of morphological changes was analysed, as was the time at which the activity of certain organs began. The timing of these events at 22 °C is documented for both species.These data were compared with similar information, previously obtained for two representatives of the Ctenopoda (Kotov & Boikova, 1998). The sequence of events is basically similar in the two groups during early and late phases of their development, but the time of shedding of the embryonic membranes is different in the Anomopoda and Ctenopoda. The ctenopod embryo hatching from the second egg membrane is covered by the third membrane, which will be cast some hours later. The anomopod embryo hatches from the second egg membrane approximately simultaneously with the shedding of the third membrane, and it is covered already by the fourth membrane after the shedding of the second egg membrane.Earlier (Kotov & Boikova, 1998), we determined four embryonic instars in the course of the development of the Ctenopoda. Two of them are passed within the egg membranes, the next two instars occur after the shedding the egg membranes within the mother's brood pouch. However, in anomopods, one of the latter (the third) occurs within the second egg membrane, one is incorporated into the egg. Thus, the development of the Anomopoda is more embryonized in comparison with that of the Ctenopoda.  相似文献

Rice weevils, Sitophilus oryzae (L.), complete their development from egg to early adulthood inside grains of wheat, rice or maize, but little is known about their feeding behavior within the seeds. An ultrasonic insect feeding monitor was used to characterize the feeding patterns of individual rice weevils as they developed in maize grains. Weevils reared in grains held at ca. 40% r.h. took longer to develop from egg to pupation than those reared in grains kept at ca. 70% r.h. Feeding patterns revealed that larvae developing in grains held at ca. 70% r.h. had only four instars, whereas supernumerary molts (five instars) occurred in certain individuals reared in grain held at ca. 40% r.h. The supernumerary molts may represent a response of the insect to stresses associated with low moisture levels in the seeds.  相似文献

The chromosome behaviour has been compared in three Crepis capillaris callus culture lines and the roots regenerated from these calli. The calli were obtained from explants derived from plants without and with two B chromosomes and the hairy roots were obtained from plants transformed with Agrobacterium rhizogenes. Cytological studies demonstrated that the presence of additional DNA as B chromosomes or as T-DNA had an influence on the numerical and structural variability of the standard chromosome in long-term callus cultures and in regenerated organs. The callus with two B chromosomes displayed higher levels of polyploidyzation than callus without B chromosomes. The roots regenerated from both these calli were only diploid, while roots regenerated from transformed callus were also polyploid. Twelve bisexual species of Heterodera reproduced by amphimixis and had the same number of n=9 (2n=18) chromosomes in maturing oocytes. H. schachtii had slightly larger chromosomes than all other species. Only sperm nuclei with n=9 chromosomes were observed inside maturing oocytes and no specialized sex chromosomes were detected in any case. A "supernumerary" chromosome was observed occasionally in oocytes of H. schachtii and H. weissi and was transmitted regularly to one-half of the progeny of the nematodes that possessed it. Cytological characteristics were not very instructive in differentiating amphimictic tleterodera species. Such karyotypic uniformity indicates cytogenetic stability of the genus and close interrelationship among its members.  相似文献

When newly-ecdysed 5th instar larvae of Manduca sexta were starved for 3 days and thereafter fed on standard diet the majority (90%) of the surviving larvae moulted into 6th instars. Allatectomy prior to starvation abolished the supernumerary moult, while denervation of the corpora allata (CA) had no effect.Cautery of medial neurosecretory cells, but not of the lateral cells, prevented supernumerary moulting and pupation ensued. Transplantation of brains from young 5th instar donors into larvae, whose medial neurosecretory cells were cauterized prior to starvation, restored the extra larval moult. Neither CA nor corpora cardiaca (CC) could be substituted for the medial neurosecretory cells.For induction of the supernumerary moult the medial neurosecretory cells are required only until day 1 after refeeding whereas the CA are required until day 3 after refeeding. Allatectomy on day 3 after refeeding resulted in the production of black 6th instar larvae.We conclude that starvation-induced supernumerary moulting is due to activation of the CA by allatotropin produced by medial neurosecretory cells in the brain. The anteromedial cells (group II) appear to be the source of allatotropin.  相似文献
