It is widely believed that the malaria vector Anopheles gambiae Giles (Diptera: Culicidae) rarely or never feeds on sugar in nature. If so, the need for supplemental blood-feeding may be increased and this would help to explain why it is such an efficient malaria vector. Nonetheless, both sexes of this mosquito species readily imbibe and digest sugar solutions, and sugar is a staple of laboratory colonies. In this study, we investigated whether An. gambiae will feed on the extra-floral nectar of three common peridomestic plants in Africa, and on honeydew of the mealybug Pseudococcus longispinus (Targioni-Tozetti) (Hemiptera: Homoptera: Pseudococcidae), and how this affects survivorship. We found that both males and females of An. gambiae provided with vegetative parts of cassava (Manihot esculenta Crantz) survived as well (x = 26.3 and 19.2 days, respectively) as they did on 50% sucrose solution (x = 29.7 and 24.3 days, respectively) and much longer than they did on water alone (x = 1.8 days, both sexes). Females provided with mealybug honeydew also lived substantially longer (x = 16.5 days) than those on water alone. Males and females provided with vegetative parts of castorbean (Ricinus communis L.) also survived much longer (x = 12.7 and 7.8 days, respectively) than on water, but those provided with flowering lantana (Lantana camara L.) did not. Anthrone tests of females after one night of exposure to these potential energy sources confirmed that they obtained fructose from cassava, from mealybug honeydew, and from non-flowering castorbean, but not from lantana or from castorbean lacking its petiolar nectaries. Previous laboratory studies had shown that sugar availability affects the survival and biting frequency of An. gambiae. It now appears that this mosquito can locate natural sources of plant sugar readily and utilize them effectively. Nectar-producing plants in the domestic environment may play a significant role in this mosquito's energy budget and malaria vectorial capacity.

Abstract.  The daily patterns of locomotor and sugar-feeding activity of virgin female Culex annulirostris from three regions in Australia and a laboratory colony are studied using video techniques in the laboratory. Although all populations display a crepuscular/nocturnal locomotor pattern, significant variation exists between populations, with the pattern of those from southern Australia differing markedly from those in central and northern Australia. It is hypothesized that adaptation of populations to local climates is responsible. Sugar-feeding (inferred from landing on a sugar source) is mostly crepuscular/nocturnal in all populations. The behavioural variation that exists within wide-ranging mosquito species is highlighted, and indicates that significant behavioural differences exist between laboratory colonies and wild-types.

Several characteristics of dispersing and non-dispersing Phlebotomus papatasi (Scopoli) were quantified and compared. The majority of dispersing sandflies, trapped crossing fallow fields, were females (68.5% v. 51.1%); of the dispersing females, 55.4% were parous, 48.1% were inseminated and 11.6% were gravid. In the population of sandflies sampled exiting from burrows of the sand rat Psammomys obesus Cretschmar, these categories, respectively, represented 39%, 90% and 26% of the females examined. Leishmania promastigotes were found in 9% of females exiting from P. obesus burrows, and in 2.7% of the dispersing females. The anthrone test established that the reason for activity of gravid females is sugar feeding. These females do not disperse and are suitable targets for future control measures.

Anthropophilic mosquitoes such as Aedes aegypti L. (Diptera: Culicidae) have been shown to have superior reproductive success on human blood when sugar is not available. Life-table experiments were conducted with Aedes albopictus Skuse and Ae. aegypti to compare the effects of sugar availability on age-specific survivorship, lifetime and daily fecundity, and blood-feeding frequency when offered human blood daily. There were no significant interactions between the effects of sugar availability and mosquito species for these four variables, indicating similar effects of sugar availability for both species. Lifetime fecundity was not significantly affected by sugar availability, but sugar-deprived females had significantly reduced age-specific survivorship than did sugar-fed females. In absence of sugar, females took bloodmeals twice as often, resulting in a higher daily fecundity. The results indicate that superior reproductive success on human blood without sugar does not seem to be limited to highly anthropophilic mosquito species, such as Ae. aegypti. We conclude that evolution of a highly anthropophilic feeding strategy is not an inevitable result of the ability to thrive on human blood alone.

Energy budget of swarming male mosquitoes
Abstract.
  • 1 The objective of this study was to determine, in the field, the energetic costs of swarming for male Anopheles freeborni (Diptera: Culicidae). By comparing the caloric contents of resting males to marked males captured after swarming, we established when sugar feeding takes place, what energy source is used to fuel swarming flight, and how much energy is invested in this activity.
  • 2 Sugar-feeding takes place sometime during the night after swarming is concluded. Nectar sugars are therefore not immediately available to fuel flight. Stored sugars (trehalose and glucose) and glycogen are the primary sources of energy for flight. Lipids are not used to fuel flight but may be used in resting metabolism.
  • 3 Male size is not related to feeding success. For males of all sizes, swarming consumes more than 50% of available calories. Accordingly, the ability of an individual to find and exploit nectar sources will greatly affect reproductive success.

The propensity of the malaria vector mosquito Anopheles gambiae Giles (Diptera: Culicidae) to ingest sugars from various plants, and subsequent survival rates, were assessed with laboratory-reared males and females offered eight species of plants commonly cultivated and/or growing wild in western Kenya. In cages (no-choice bioassay), mosquitoes given the opportunity to feed on castorbean (Ricinus communis L.) had the longest survival times (mean and median survival time of 6.99 +/- 0.23 and 5.67 +/- 0.17 days, respectively), comparable to mosquitoes given 6% glucose (mean and median survival time of 8.70 +/- 0.23 and 6.67 +/- 0.33 days, respectively). Survival rates of An. gambiae were low on the other plants, comparable to mosquitoes given only water. Three plants: sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas L.), wild sage (Lantana camara L.) and castorbean provided levels of sugar ingestion by both sexes of An. gambiae detectable using the cold anthrone method, showing a positive correlation between median survival and sugar consumption (Spearman rank correlation coefficient = 0.905, P < 0.0001). Equal numbers of males and females were released in an enclosed semi-field screenhouse system containing a range of local plants, but no host for blood, and allowed to feed ad libitum: 6.7 +/- 0.5% (11/64) of those recaptured were found to contain detectable fructose (all females). Common plants are clearly a viable source of nutrition for adult female An. gambiae, as well as males, and may constitute and important resource for this important malaria vector.

ABSTRACT. At ambient temperature, contact with free liquids containing sugar induces Culiseta inornata Williston (Diptera: Culicidae) females to adopt the nectar-feeding mode of behaviour. While in this mode, two distinct control mechanisms appear to operate: one controlling the amount of ingestion, the other diet destination. Mosquitoes were exposed to water and various concentrations of sucrose and cellobiose in water. Only small or taste amounts of water were imbibed, and it was directed to the midgut. Cellobiose solutions of less than 0.1M were treated as water. Cellobiose was phagostimulatory; as the concentration increased from 0.1 to 0.5 M the percentage of insects ingesting large amounts rose from 11% to 68%. Cellobiose diets were directed primarily to the midgut. Sucrose was also phagostimulatory. As the concentration increased from 0.025 to 0.2 M, the percentage of insects ingesting large amounts increased from 20 to 92. At lower sucrose levels, insects ingesting large amounts put it mainly into the crop, while insects ingesting smaller amounts put the diet into the midgut or both the crop and midgut. At sucrose concentrations of 0.4 M or more, most insects took large amounts and directed it to the crop. Different combinations of sucrose and cellobiose with a total concentration of 0.5 M all caused insects to take mainly large meals. At sucrose concentrations of 0.2M and above, the insects responded as they would to sucrose alone, directing the diet to the crop. At sucrose concentrations of 0.1M or less, diet destination patterns were more complex, with individual animals depositing the diet in the crop, the midgut, or in both. A behavioural model is presented which postulates different receptors for sucrose and cellobiose, control of diet destination via differential control of midgut and crop valves, and variation of threshold values according to endogenous factors.

1. Most of the female crabhole mosquitoes Deinocerites cancer Theobald entering bait traps had undeveloped ovaries. 2. Nearly half of the D. cancer females that were captured in bait traps, but denied blood, were gravid following a 1 week holding period; they developed relatively small egg clutches autogenously (mean = 7.4 eggs per gravid female). 3. Although both parous and nulliparous D. cancer females were captured exiting from crabholes, only parous females were attracted to and collected in bait traps. 4. Much larger egg clutches (mean = 41.8 eggs per female) were produced anautogenously by mosquitoes that blood-fed on chickens. 5. All D. cancer females from field collected pupae developed eggs autogenously when allowed to mate and sugar feed in the laboratory. These mosquitoes produced an initial egg clutch with a mean size equivalent to that found in blood-fed, parous mosquitoes from bait traps. 6. In the field, mating and sugar feeding rather than blood-feeding seem to stimulate production of the initial egg clutch. 7. D. cancer blood-feeding appears to be delayed until after the first egg clutch has been laid; some parous crabhole mosquitoes are facultative blood feeders and can produce an egg clutch either with or without a blood meal.
