Surface irrigation in the Punjab province of Pakistan has been carried out on a large scale since the development of the Indus Basin Irrigation System in the late 19th century. The objective of our study was to understand how the population dynamics of adult anopheline mosquitoes (Diptera: Culicidae) could be related to malaria transmission in rural areas with intensive irrigation and a history of malaria epidemics. In this paper we present our observations from three villages located along an irrigation canal in South Punjab. The study was carried out from 1 April 1999 to 31 March 2000. Mosquitoes were collected from bedrooms using the pyrethroid spraycatch method and from vegetation and animal sheds using backpack aspirators. Overall, Anopheles subpictus Grassi sensu lato predominated (55.6%), followed by An. stephensi Liston s.l. (41.4%), An. culicifacies Giles s.l. (2.0%), An. pulcherrimus Theobald (1.0%) and An. peditaeniatus Leicester (0.1%). Most mosquitoes (98.8%) were collected from indoor resting-sites whereas collections from potential resting-sites outdoors accounted for only 1.2% of total anopheline densities, confirming the endophilic behaviour of anophelines in Pakistan. Anopheles stephensi, An. culicifacies and An. subpictus populations peaked in August, September and October, respectively. High temperatures and low rainfall negatively affected seasonal abundance in our area. There were interesting differences in anopheline fauna between villages, with An. culicifacies occurring almost exclusively in the village at the head of the irrigation canal, where waterlogged and irrigated fields prevailed. Monthly house-to-house fever surveys showed that malaria transmission remained low with an overall slide positivity rate of 2.4% and all cases were due to infection with Plasmodium vivax. The most plausible explanation for low transmission in our study area seems to be the low density of Pakistan's primary malaria vector, An. culicifacies. The role of other species such as An. stephensi is not clear. Our observations indicate that, in South Punjab, irrigation-related sites support the breeding of anopheline mosquitoes, including the vectors of malaria. As our study was carried out during a year with exceptionally hot and dry climatic conditions, densities and longevity of mosquitoes would probably be higher in other years and could result in more significant malaria transmission than we observed. To assess the overall importance of irrigation-related sites in the epidemiology of malaria in the Punjab, more studies are needed to compare irrigated and non-irrigated areas.  相似文献

As part of investigations on potential linkages between irrigation and malaria transmission, all surface water bodies in and around three villages along an irrigation distributary in South Punjab, Pakistan, were surveyed for anopheline mosquito larvae (Diptera: Culicidae) from April 1999 to March 2000. Samples were characterized according to exposure to sunlight, substratum, presence of vegetation, fauna, inorganic matter and physical water condition (clear/turbid/foul). Also water temperature, dissolved oxygen (DO), electroconductivity (EC) and pH of sites were recorded. A total of 37982 Anopheles larvae of six morphological types were collected from 2992 samples taken from irrigation/agricultural and village/domestic aquatic habitats. Anopheles subpictus Grassi sensu lato was by far the most abundant (74.3%), followed by An. culicifacies Giles s.l. (4.1%), An. stephensi Liston s.l. (2.6%), An. pulcherrimus Theobald (1.8%), An. peditaeniatus Leicester (0.3%) and An. nigerrimus Giles (0.1%). The four most abundant species were significantly associated with waterlogged fields and communal village drinking-water tanks. Habitat characteristics most correlated with occurrence of anophelines were the physical water condition and the absence/presence of fauna, particularly predators. Occurrence and abundance of Anopheles immatures were not significantly correlated with water temperature, DO, EC or pH. Malaria vectors of the Anopheles culicifacies complex occurred at relatively low densities, mainly in irrigated and waterlogged fields. In South Punjab, where rainfall is very low, it should be possible to reduce anopheline breeding through water management, as larvae develop mainly in water bodies that are directly or indirectly related to the extensive canal-irrigation system.  相似文献

Abstract. Crude neem products have earlier shown considerable promise for control of culicine mosquito vectors in rice fields as a by-product of their agricultural use as fertilizers, but suffer from disadvantages of bulkiness and lack of stability in storage. Relatively stable lipid-rich fractions of neem were shown to be as effective as good-quality crude neem products in control of breeding of culicine vectors of Japanese encephalitis, and also produced a slight but significant reduction in populations of anopheline pupae. Neem-based formulations coated over urea significantly increased grain yield, but used alone did not, whereas combining the use of neem-coated urea and water management by intermittent irrigation had a greater effect on grain yield than that of water management alone. The neem fractions were relatively cost-effective, and the combined water management and neem-coated urea strategy is acceptable to farmers, who are already aware of the benefits of the use of neem-coated urea, and of water management. This technology therefore has considerable promise as an environmentally benign method of rice-field mosquito control that could be sustainably implemented by farmers.  相似文献

Abstract. Hessian curtains impregnated with deltamethrin 50 mg/m2 were hung in the eaves and doorways of eight one-roomed huts in Madurai, Tamil Nadu State, South India. Statistically significant reductions of indoor-resting and man-biting densities of the mosquitoes Anopheles subpictus and Culex quinquefasciatus were observed for 14 weeks, in two field trials. Bioassays on curtains in the field showed over 50% mortality of Cx quinquefasciatus and An. stephensi for up to 8 weeks. The curtains were highly acceptable to the community, and cost approximately Rs.33.15 (US1.05) for material and Rs.10 (0.32) for deltamethrin per hut, totalling Rs 53.15 (1.70) for two impregnations giving 6 months protection. Comparative costs of house-spraying with residual insecticides are estimated as Rs.1.92 (0.06) for two rounds of DDT at lg/m2, or Rs.40 (1.27) for three rounds of malathion at 2g/m2. Therefore the relative annual cost of protection using deltamethrin-impregnated hessian curtains is 28× or 1.3× more than for house-spraying with DDT or malathion, respectively (excluding operational expenditure).  相似文献

Pyrethroid-sprayed tents for malaria control   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
Field trials were undertaken in the North West Frontier Province of Pakistan to determine the effects of pyrethroid-sprayed tents on feeding success, mortality and biting-rates of wild mosquitoes attracted to bait cows confined within the tents. Under natural conditions, endophagic mosquitoes rested only briefly in untreated tents during the night, followed by complete exodus at dawn. In tents sprayed on the interior surface with permethrin 0.5 mg/m2 or with deltamethrin 0.03 g/m2 the biting rate of Anopheles stephensi was reduced by about 40%; detergency against culicines and other anophelines was much less. Mortality-rates of bloodfed mosquitoes from the treated tents were 75%An.stephensi, 65%An. subpictus but only 10% of culicines. Outer fly-sheets prolonged the effective life of the treatment; bioassays on the sprayed inner-sheets showed that insecticidal efficacy remained high for over a year, whereas on tents without fly-sheets permethrin residual efficacy declined rapidly 20–40 weeks post-treatment. It is concluded that tent-spraying with fast-acting photostable residual pyrethroid insecticide would probably provide effective protection against malaria transmission for the inhabitants of tents in any part of the world where the vector mosquitoes are endophilic and susceptible to pyrethroids.  相似文献

Anopheles subpictus s.l. Grassi (Diptera: Culicidae) is a malaria vector in South Asia, where insecticides are the mainstay for vector control interventions. Information on any variation in metabolic enzyme levels in mosquitoes is helpful with respect to adapting alternative strategies for vector control. The scarce data on the biochemical basis of insecticide resistance in malaria vectors of Pakistan limit the available information for vector control interventions within the country. The insecticide susceptibility status and its biochemical basis against dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) (4%), deltamethrin (0.05%) and permethrin (0.75%) in An. subpictus s.l. collected from all Tehsils of district Kasur were evaluated. For this purpose, a World Health Organization susceptibility bioassay was performed followed by the detection of altered metabolic enzyme activity using biochemical assays. Similarly, a significant difference in knock‐down effect was observed among field collected and susceptible strain against all insecticides 24 h post exposure. The overall mean mortality rates of DDT, deltamethrin and permethrin were 27.86% [95% confidence interval (CI) = 29.65–26.06], 44.89% (95% CI = 46.23–43.54) and 78.82% (95% CI = 80.16–77.47), respectively. The biochemical assays revealed an elevated level of metabolic enzymes in the field population. The results provide evidence of resistance against organochlorine and pyrethroid groups in a field population of An. subpictus s.l. from district Kasur mediated by multiple metabolic mechanisms, including acetylcholinesterases, esterases, cytochrome P450 and glutathione S‐transferases.  相似文献

Malaria has declined around Chilika Lake (85°20′ E, 19°40′ N) in Orissa State, India, from hyperendemicity in the 1930s to hypoendemicity during recent decades. Six decades ago, 21 spp. of Anopheles mosquitoes (Diptera: Culicidae) were recorded from this area, including the well known Indian malaria vectors An. culicifacies Giles, An. fluviatilis James, An. maculatus Theobald, An. stephensi Liston and An. sundaicus (Rodenwaldt), the last formerly regarded as the main vector locally. Surveys of Chilika area during 1995–96 found 8 spp. of culicine plus 14 spp. of anopheline mosquitoes, the latter comprising An. subpictus Grassi sensu lato, An. hyrcanus (Pallas) s.l., An. vagus Dönitz, An. annularis van der Wulp s.l., An. culicifacies Giles s.l., An. aconitus Dönitz, An. varuna Iyengar, An. barbirostris van der Wulp s.l., An. philippinensis Ludlow, An. ramsayi Covell, An. jeyporiensis James, An. pallidus Theobald, An. tessellatus Theobald and An. karwari James in decreasing order of abundance. Among indoor‐resting female mosquitoes, the anthropophilic index was 4–7% and some species (An. culicifacies, An. subpictus, An. vagus) tended to enter houses for resting after blood‐feeding outside. Females of potentially infective age (three‐parous) were obtained for An. culicifacies (11%) and An. annularis (< 2%), the more abundant established vector in this coastal area, but not for small samples of An. subpictus and An. vagus. Anophelines reported previously but not found in our survey were An. fluviatilis, An. jamesii Theobald, A. maculatus, An. splendidus Koidzumi, An. stephensi, An. theobaldi Giles and the former main vector An. sundaicus.  相似文献

A histological technique was used to detect the multiple blood-feeding of female mosquitoes, within the same gonotrophic cycle, in field populations of the malaria vectors Anopheles culicifacies and An. subpictus (Diptera: Culicidae) at a village in the low country of Sri Lanka, during 1994-96. Among 3306 An. culicifacies and 871 An. subpictus engorged females examined, respectively, 34.4% and 30.4% were multiple-fed. In these two species, double meals accounted for 92.7% and 89.5%, and triple meals for 7.3% and 10.5% of multiple meals, respectively. More females of An. culicifacies (53.7%) than An. subpictus (44.5%) multiple-fed on different nights. Multiple feeding rates in the two species were independent of sample size and field abundance. In An. culicifacies, but not An. subpictus, these rates were proportional to ambient temperature but not to humidity. Bloodmeal ELISA showed that 8.3% of 242 An. culicifacies were human-fed and 80% of these (i.e. 6.6%) were concurrently bovid-fed. Combining the histological and ELISA data, it was estimated that multiple feeding involving a human host had occurred in 7.2% of the blood-feeding An. culicifacies population at this study site. Only 1.2% of 406 An. subpictus were human-fed and all of these were concurrently bovid-fed. Multiple bloodfeeding within the same gonotrophic cycle was attributed to a local 'frequent feeding strategy' in these primarily zoophagic and endophilic malaria vectors. Unfortunately this strategy enhances their human-biting rate and hence their vectorial capacity.  相似文献

Abstract. Anopheles subpictus Grassi is shown to comprise four reproductively distinct species, designated A, B, C and D, occurring sympatrically in villages of Pondicherry, southeast India.
Adult females were reared individually from wild larvae and examined for their morphological and chromosomal characters. Paracentric fixed inversions on the X-chromosome serve to distinguish the species cytogenetically, with no inversion heterozygotes (i.e. no interspecific hybrids) among totals of 717 species A (X+a,+b), 1863 species B (Xa, b), 869 species C (Xa,+b) and 1365 species D (X +a,b) identified.
Morphologically, diagnostic characters for each of the four species are seen in the egg float ridge number, larval mesothoracic seta 4, pupal seta 7-1 and the palpi of female adults. Species A. C and D immatures inhabit freshwater, whereas the malaria vector species B breeds in saltwater and was found only in coastal villages.  相似文献
