1. Behavioral experiments with jittering echoes examined acoustic images of sonar targets in the echolocating bat, Eptesicus fuscus, along the echo delay or target range axis. Echo phase, amplitude, bandwidth, and signal-to-noise ratio were manipulated to assess the underlying auditory processes for image formation. 2. Fine delay acuity is about 10 ns. Calibration and control procedures indicate that this represents temporal acuity rather than spectral discrimination. Jitter discrimination curves change in phase when the phase of one jittering echo is shifted by 180 degrees relative to the other, showing that echo phase is involved in delay estimation. At an echo detectability index of about 36 dB, fine acuity is 40 ns, which is approximately as predicted for the delay accuracy of an ideal receiver. 3. Compound performance curves for 0 degrees and 180 degrees phase conditions match the crosscorrelation function of the echoes. The locations of both 0 degrees and 180 degrees phase peaks in the performance curves shift along the time axis by an amount that matches neural amplitude-latency trading in Eptesicus, confirming a temporal basis for jitter discrimination.  相似文献

Three epitopes have been localized by immunoelectron microscopy on subunit Aa6 of the 4 x 6-meric hemocyanin of the scorpion Androctonus australis. Soluble immunocomplexes composed of monoclonal antibodies and of native hemocyanin were purified, negatively stained with uranyle acetate by the single-layer technique, and examined under the electron microscope (EM). The molecule images were digitized, aligned, and submitted to correspondence analysis according to the method of Van Heel and Frank (Ultramicroscopy 6:187-194, 1981). A high-precision localization of the attachment point of the Fab arm to the antigen was achieved through a careful analysis of the average images. This method easily allowed the discrimination of epitopes located in different domains (Mr 20 kDa) of the same subunit. Nonoverlapping epitopes located in the same structural domain of subunit Aa6 could be distinguished by the stain exclusion patterns of their Fab arms. The method is general and may be used for epitope mapping in any antigen producing definite EM views.  相似文献

Summary Animal cells from 80-L and 2000-L fed batch fermentations were removed by a prototype disc stack centrifuge in order to achieve a fast and reliable separation of solids from large quantities of cell culture fluids. The clarification capacity was excellent for animal cells but particles remained in the liquid phase and affected further downstream processing of the cell-free harvest fluid. No significant loss of product was observed. A number of parameters were monitored to optimize process conditions for use with animal cells.  相似文献

1.  Echolocating bats (Eptesicus fuscus) were trained to discriminate between simulated targets consisting of one or two echo-wavefronts with internal time delays of up to 100 s. Spectral and temporal properties and total signal energy of the targets were evaluated and predictions for performances of bats derived from receiver models were compared with measured performances.
2.  Eptesicus fuscus was able to discriminate a one-wavefront target from two-wavefront targets with distinct internal time delays (12 s, 32–40 s and 52–100 s). Performance was not affected by changes in total signal energy. Bats also successfully discriminated between two-wavefront targets with different internal time delays.
3.  Performance predicted from differences in total energy between targets did not match the measured performance, indicating that bats did not rely on total echo energy. This finding is also supported by the behavioral data. Performance predicted from spectral and temporal receiver models both matched the measured performance and, therefore, neither one of these models can be favored over the other.
4.  The behavioral data suggest that Eptesicus fuscus did not transform echo information into estimates of target range separation and, therefore, did not perceive the two wavefronts of each simulated two-wavefront echo as two separate targets.

In electromagnetic dosimetry, anatomical human models are commonly obtained by segmentation of magnetic resonance imaging or computed tomography scans. In this paper, a human head model extracted from thermal infrared images is examined in terms of its applicability to specific absorption rate (SAR) calculations. Since thermal scans are two-dimensional (2D) representation of surface temperature, this allows researchers to overcome the extensive computational demand associated with 3D simulation. The numerical calculations are performed using the finite-difference time-domain method with mesh sizes of 2 mm at 900 MHz plane wave irradiation. The power density of the incident plane wave is assumed to be 10 W/m2. Computations were compared with a realistic anatomical head model. The results show that although there were marked differences in the local SAR distribution in the various tissues in the two models, the 1 g peak SAR values are approximately similar in the two models.  相似文献

One solution to the shortage of human organs available for transplantation envisions growing new organs in situ. This can be accomplished by transplantation of developing organ anlagen/primordia. Allotransplantation of embryonic day 15 metanephroi into the omentum of adult hosts is followed by differentiation, growth, vascularization and function of the implants. Here we show that survival of rats with all native renal mass removed can be increased by prior metanephros transplantation and ureteroureterostomy. Excretion of urine formed by metanephroi is prerequisite for enhanced survival. This is the first demonstration that life can be extended following de novo renal organogenesis.  相似文献
