A field experiment on winter wheat in autumn 1991 investigated the effect of the rhabditid nematode, Phasmarhabditis hermaphrodita, applied to soil at five dose rates (108 - 1010 infective larvae ha-1) immediately after seed sowing, on slug populations and damage to seeds and seedlings. The nematode was compared with methiocarb pellets broadcast at recommended field rate immediately after drilling and no molluscicide treatment. Slug damage to wheat seeds and seedlings was assessed 6 and 13 wk after drilling. Seedling survival increased and slug grazing damage to seedlings declined linearly with increasing log nematode dose. These two measures of slug damage were combined to give an index of undamaged plant equivalents, which also increased linearly with increasing log nematode dose. ANOVA showed that, after 6 wk, there were significantly more undamaged plant equivalents on plots treated with the two highest nematode doses (3 × 109 and 1 × 1010 ha-1) than on untreated plots, but the number of undamaged plant equivalents on methiocarb-treated plots was not significantly greater than that on untreated plots. Slug populations were assessed by refuge trapping and soil sampling. Deroceras reticulatum was the commonest of several species of slugs recorded. During the first 4 wk after sowing, significantly more slugs were found under refuge traps on plots treated with certain doses of P. hermaphrodita than under traps on untreated plots and more showed signs of nematode infection than expected from the prevalence of infection in slugs from soil samples, suggesting that the presence of P. hermaphrodita altered slug behaviour. Application of P. hermaphrodita had no significant impact on numbers or biomass of slugs in soil during a 27 wk period after treatment, except after 5 wk when slug numbers were inversely related to log nematode dose. However, by this time, numbers in soil samples from untreated plots had declined to levels similar to those in plots treated with the highest dose of nematodes. During the first 5 wk after treatment, c. 20% of slugs in soil samples from untreated plots showed symptoms of nematode infection. It is suggested that this represented the background level of infection in the experimental field rather than spread of infection from treated plots. The apparent lack of impact of P. hermaphrodita on slug numbers and biomass in soil suggests that its efficacy in protecting wheat from slug damage was through inhibition of feeding by infected slugs.  相似文献

Molluscan haemolymph was evaluated as an antigen for the detection, by enzyme‐linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), of mollusc proteins within the crop contents of carabid beetles, using an anti‐haemolymph antiserum. The value of using a narrow range of prey‐specific immunogens, rather than whole‐body macerates, was discussed. Predators and potential prey were tested by a quantitative indirect ELISA, with separate evaluation of antigen reactions with non‐specific and specific antibodies. The assay proved to be capable of detecting less than 1 ng of haemolymph protein and the antiserum reacted strongly with all molluscs tested. Initial cross‐reactions with earthworms were effectively eliminated by absorption. A range of invertebrates was tested, and a significance level established relative to the invertebrates giving the strongest cross‐reaction, which proved to be wolf spiders Pardosa sp. Harvestmen (Opiliones), that initially gave strong reactions to the antiserum, were shown to have fed upon molluscs. Laboratory tests on the crop contents of slug‐fed beetles demonstrated clear detection for at least 4 days after feeding.  相似文献

A nematode, Phasmarhabditis hermaphrodita, known to be associated with slugs but not previously thought to be parasitic, was shown to be a parasite capable of killing the pest slug Deroceras reticulatum. The parasite infects slugs in the area beneath the mantle surrounding the shell, causing a disease with characteristic symptoms, particularly swelling of the mantle. Infection leads to death of the slug, usually between seven and 21 days afterwards. The nematode then spreads and multiplies in the cadaver. In an experiment where individual D. reticulatum were exposed to different numbers of P. hermaphrodita, a significant positive relationship was found between nematode dose and slug mortality. In two experiments on host range, the nematode was found to infect and kill all pest slug species tested: Deroceras caruanae, Arion distinctus, Arion silvaticus, Arion intermedius, Arion ater, Tandonia sowerbyi and T. budapestensis, in addition to D. reticulatum.  相似文献

The probing behaviour of Rhopalosiphum padi (L.) and Sitobion avenae (F.) and the feeding behaviour of several slug species, (Deroceras reticulatum (Müller), Arion distinctus Mabille, Agriolimax caruanae Pollonera, Maximus sp.) were assessed on seedlings of winter barley (Hordeum marinum) treated with different concentrations of azadirachtin. Settling behaviour of both aphid species was strongly biased towards the untreated seedlings or those treated with low concentrations of azadirachtin. Concentrations of <500 ppm were effective with topical application and probing activity was reduced for at least 4 days after application. Systemic activity of azadirachtin against cereal aphids was also demonstrated. Feeding behaviour of the slug species, as seen by the amount of leaf eaten compared to the controls, was not affected by the presence of azadirachtin at those concentrations which deterred aphids from feeding. The relevance of these results to crop protection is discussed.  相似文献

Background and Aims

Despite the selective pressure slugs may exert on seedling recruitment there is a lack of information in this context within grassland restoration studies. Selective grazing is influenced by interspecific differences in acceptability. As part of a larger study of how slug–seedling interactions may influence upland hay meadow restoration, an assessment of relative acceptability is made for seedlings of meadow plants to the slug, Deroceras reticulatum.

Methods

Slug feeding damage to seedling monocultures of 23 meadow species and Brassica napus was assessed in microcosms over 14 d. The severity and rate of damage incurred by each plant species was analysed with a generalized additive mixed model. Plant species were then ranked for their relative acceptability.

Key Results

Interspecific variation in relative acceptability suggested seedlings of meadow species form a hierarchy of acceptability to D. reticulatum. The four most acceptable species were Achillea millefolium and the grasses Holcus lanatus, Poa trivialis and Festuca rubra. Trifolium pratense was acceptable to D. reticulatum and was the second highest ranking forb species. The most unacceptable species were mainly forbs associated with the target grassland, and included Geranium sylvaticum, Rumex acetosa, Leontodon hispidus and the grass Anthoxanthum odoratum. A strong positive correlation was found for mean cumulative feeding damage and cumulative seedling mortality at day 14.

Conclusions

Highly unacceptable species to D. reticulatum are unlikely to be selectively grazed by slugs during the seedling recruitment phase, and were predominantly target restoration species. Seedlings of highly acceptable species may be less likely to survive slug herbivory and contribute to seedling recruitment at restoration sites. Selective slug herbivory, influenced by acceptability, may influence community-level processes if seedling recruitment and establishment of key functional species, such as T. pratense is reduced.  相似文献

In three field experiments, the rhabditid nematode Phasmarhabditis hermaphrodita was applied one or more times at the standard rate (3 × 109 ha?1) or half the standard rate to protect crops from slug damage under experimental conditions. Expt 1 was done in a field planted with the ornamental Polygonatum japonica. The treatments were: infective juveniles of the nematode at the standard field rate, metaldehyde pellets at the recommended field rate, and ioxynil (a herbicide with molluscicidal properties) at 90 mg m?2. The treatments were repeated every 2 wk. Arion ater agg. caused most of the damage to P. japonica. There were no significant differences in damage between treatments during the 3 wk after first application, but plants on plots treated with metaldehyde or nematodes had significantly less damage than plants on untreated plots in the fourth and fifth weeks. Expts 2 and 3 were done on the same site, the first with leaf beet and the second with lettuce. The treatments in these experiments were: nematodes applied to the planted area at the standard field rate 3 days prior to planting, with or without previous application of cow manure; nematodes at half standard rate applied twice, 6 days apart, to the planted area or to the surrounding area; metaldehyde pellets and iron phosphate pellets, both applied at the recommended rate to the planted area immediately after planting. In both experiments, the two chemical molluscicides and nematodes applied once to the planted area at the standard field rate without previous application of cow manure, or twice at half standard rate, were able to reduce slug damage. Nematodes applied after manure did not reduce slug damage. None of the treatments reduced the numbers of slugs contaminating the harvested plants. Slug populations were assessed by means of soil sampling before and after Expts 2 and 3. Only after Expt 3 was there a significant effect of treatment on slug numbers, with significantly fewer in metaldehyde treated plots than in untreated plots.  相似文献

The vitrinids, which represent a probably competitively inferior transitional stage between shelled snails and slugs, and their sister group, the limacoid slugs, are used to investigate a macroevolutionary effect of a microevolutionary process, competition between individuals resulting in ecological displacement of one clade by another, based on patterns in the present-day world. The activity period and the altitudinal distribution of the vitrinids has shifted - to the cold season or to higher altitudes, respectively - in those regions where their range overlaps with that of the limacoid slugs. The diversity of the vitrinids is lower in regions with limacoid slugs. These patterns can be ascribed to the ecological displacement or the exclusion of the vitrinids from some habitats by limacoid slugs. Two vitrinid clades which independently colonized regions without limacoid slugs show patterns attributable to ecological release. The ecological displacement or exclusion of the vitrinids by the slugs is probably due to competition for shelter.  相似文献

Aims: To assess whether flies and slugs acquire strains of Campylobacter jejuni and Campylobacter coli present in local ruminant faeces. Methods and Results: Campylobacter was cultured from flies, slugs and ruminant faeces that were collected from a single farm in Scotland over a 19‐week period. The isolates were typed using multi‐locus sequence typing (MLST) and compared with isolates from cattle and sheep faeces. Campylobacter jejuni and Camp. coli were isolated from 5·8% (n = 155, average of 75 flies per pool) and 13·3% (n = 15, average of 8·5 slugs per pool) of pooled fly and slug samples, respectively. The most common sequence type (ST) in flies was Camp. coli ST‐962 (approx. 40%) regardless of the prevalence in local cattle (2·3%) or sheep (25·0%) faeces. Two positive slug pools generated the same ST that has not been reported elsewhere. Conclusions: Despite their low carriage rate, flies are able to acquire Campylobacter STs that are locally present, although the subset carried may be biased when compared to local source. Slugs were shown to carry a previously unreported Campylobacter ST. Significance and Impact of the Study: This study has demonstrated that flies carry viable Campylobacter and may contribute to the transfer of STs within and between groups of animals on farms. Further, they may therefore present a risk to human health via their contact with ready‐to‐eat foods or surfaces.  相似文献

To quantitatively reveal accumulation patterns of environmentally relevant heavy metals in selected saprophagous or phytophagous soil invertebrates, adults of the species Porcellio scaber (Isopoda), Tetrodontophora bielanensis (Collembola), Julus scandinavius (Diplopoda), and Deroceras reticulatum (Gastropoda) were exposed to lead-, cadmium-, or zinc-contaminated food and soil for three weeks. The heavy metal concentrations in the food, the substrate, and the bodies of the invertebrates were measured by atomic absorption spectrophotometry (AAS). The investigated species were found to differ in their metal accumulation strategies, which is interpreted as a consequence of different detoxification mechanisms.  相似文献
