Aims Rhododendron ponticum L. is reputed to be a post Plio‐Pleistocene relict plant species with a disjunct distribution that comprises the Iberian Peninsula to the west and the Euxinian region plus some restricted Mediterranean areas to the east. We analysed the ecological range (of subsp. baeticum) in the western area (Aljibe Mountains, north of the Strait of Gibraltar) to understand the factors determining the present area limitation. Location Sierra del Aljibe, north of the Strait of Gibraltar (Iberian Peninsula). Methods We selected 20 riparian sites where R. ponticum is common, and compiled data on the ecological diversity of associated woody species and ferns. We established a 500‐m main transect in each site, along the stream or river course, in which we placed five 20‐m‐long plots at regular intervals. We recorded physiographic habitat features, woody plants and fern abundance, and the number of R. ponticum individuals. Results Rhododendron ponticum in southern Spain is restricted to riparian forests in acidic soils (pH 4.0–6.4), and is mainly found on the banks of inclined and enclosed streams. In our inventory we recorded 59 woody taxa and 12 ferns, with R. ponticum being the dominant species of the understorey (mean abundance 78.6%). The communities are characterized by a high incidence of the humid warm temperate element, both in number of species (18.8 ± 3.7 per site) and abundance; meanwhile, the presence of the modern Mediterranean element (mean number of species 3.4 ± 3.8 per site) appears to be favoured by disturbance. These ecological–historical groups of taxa also show distinct patterns of typological habit, frequency of endemism, infrageneric diversity and geographical range. Populations of R. ponticum are characterized by a very variable density of seedlings in many sites, and the virtual lack of juveniles. Main conclusions Riparian forests of the Aljibe Mountains constitute a refuge for R. ponticum where the species persists, but populations appear to be in decline. The narrow ecological range of R. ponticum in the area strongly contrasts with its wide amplitude in the eastern natural area, mainly the Euxinian region, where R. ponticum probably finds better conditions due to the environmental heterogeneity of the region, and the lack of a hot dry season.  相似文献

Summary Dalbergia sissoo, a wind-dispersed tropical tree, shows a positively skewed distribution of seeds per pod. This is attributed to the enhanced dispersal advantage of few-seeded pods due to their reduced wing loading (ratio of weight to pod surface area) and low settling velocity. The proximate mechanisms causing the positively skewed distribution were investigated. The distribution could not be attributed to the distribution pattern of ovule number per ovary, pollen grain limitation, lack of ovule fertilization, or post-fertilization elimination of many-seeded pods. Rather, it was caused by the post-fertilization abortion of seeds within a pod 2 weeks after fertilization. This intra-pod seed abortion (IPSA) is due to a dominance hierarchy of fertilized ovules from the distal (near stigma) to the basal end, generated by the temporal differences in fertilization. The dominant developing seeds at the distal end cause the abortion of others through the production and diffusion of an aborting agent. When the dominance hierarchy of the siblings is not intense, pods are formed with more than one seed. We argue that the positively skewed distribution of seeds per pod is not due to maternal regulation but is a result of sibling rivalry. We propose that this sibling rivalry is generated by genetic differences in pollen grain fitness and disucss the results in the context of parent-offspring conflict.  相似文献

Irradiation by pulsed microwaves (9.4 GHz, 1 microsecond pulses at 1,000/s), both with and without concurrent amplitude modulation (AM) by a sinusoid at discrete frequencies between 14 and 41 MHz, was assessed for effects on the immune system of Balb/C mice. The mice were immunized either by sheep red blood cells (SRBC) or by glutaric-anhydride conjugated bovine serum albumin (GA-BSA), then exposed to the microwaves at a low rms power density (30 microW/cm2; whole-body-averaged SAR approximately 0.015 W/kg). Sham exposure or microwave irradiation took place during each of five contiguous days, 10 h/day. The antibody response was evaluated by the plaque-forming cell assay (SRBC experiment) or by the titration of IgM and IgG antibodies (GA-BSA experiment). In the absence of AM, the pulsed field did not greatly alter immune responsiveness. In contrast, exposure to the field under the combined-modulation condition resulted in significant, AM-frequency-dependent augmentation or weakening of immune responses.  相似文献

实验分为低压组(低压舱7,000米)与常压组(吸入7.6%低氧混合气),每组受试者各为12名,有7名参加了两组实验。每组各有4名平均经15分23秒发生了意识模糊或丧失(通称意识障碍)。障碍者的肺泡氧分压为29.9±0.8mmHg。障碍发生前,呈现严重无力,觉醒度降低,反应迟钝,脑波特征是高幅6波(100-300μV)占优势。障碍发生时,高幅δ波丧失节律,幅度衰减,波型不规则,额枕失同步;呼吸循环代偿功能增强程度明显高于障碍前。本工作对于预测和评价人体急性缺氧引起的意识障碍有意义。  相似文献

In the present study, we investigated whether weak (10% of maximal voluntary contraction) tonic dorsiflexion (DF) and plantarflexion (PF) affects the two conventional parameters used for evaluating the excitability of the soleus motoneuron (MN) pool, i.e. the ratio of the threshold of H-reflex to that of M-response (Hth:Mth) and the ratio of the maximal amplitude of H-reflex to that of M-response (Hmax:Mmax) in human subjects. The results showed that the Hmax:Mmax decreased during DF and increased during PF compared with that during rest, whereas no clear alteration was observed in Hth:Mth. These results are consistent with the scheme proposed by earlier workers, who have argued that neither inhibitory nor facilitatory effects of the conditioning stimulus apply to specific spinal reflex circuits occurring around the threshold of the test H-reflex. It is suggested, therefore, that the conventional use of the Hth:Mth ratio as a parameter reflecting the excitability of the MN pool should be reconsidered.  相似文献

Cultures of human tonsil lymphocytes were exposed in a Crawford cell to a 450-MHz field (peak envelope intensity 1.0 mW/cm2), sinusoidally amplitude modulated (depth 80%) at frequencies between 3 and 100 Hz for periods up to 60 min. The Crawford cell was housed in a temperature-controlled chamber (35 degrees C) and control cultures were placed in the same chamber. Activity of cAMP-dependent protein kinase relative to controls remained unaltered by fields modulated at 16 or 60 Hz with exposures of 15, 30, and 60 min. By contrast, total non-cAMP-dependent kinase activity fell to less than 50% of unexposed control levels after 15 and 30 min exposures, but, despite continuing field exposure, returned to control or preexposure levels by 45 and 60 min. A smaller reduction (20-25%) also occurred with 60-Hz modulation and was also restricted to exposure durations of 15 and 30 min. CW 450-MHz fields were without effect. Reduced enzyme activity occurred with 16-, 40-, and 60-Hz modulation frequencies, but not with 3-, 6-, 80-, or 100-Hz modulation. The specific identity of this kinase is unknown. This rapid but transient reduction in lymphocyte protein kinase activity restricted to modulation frequencies between 16 and 60 Hz and to less than 30 min exposure is consistent with "windowing" with respect to modulation frequency and exposure duration.  相似文献

Summary With weeds as with many plant species the main or first level factor determining the area of distribution is a (complex) climatic one. As they have an artificially enlarged area of distribution, they have a huge border area (in an ecological sense), where the climate is not optimal for them, and where they have a narrow ecological and sociological amplitude and are especially sensitive to some measures of modern intensified agriculture. In their northern border areas species of southern origin are restricted to calcarcous substrates and to agrestal and finally ruderal communities, while in their optimal climate they are indifferent to that soil factor and able to compete with other species even in natural vegetation types. Species presumably of origin in atlantic areas are restricted with increasing continentality to very poor and acid soils, as they cannot compete with other species on better sites any more, because of their physiological properties. Thus weed distribution demonstrates the complicated reaction of plant species to the complexes of soil-climatic factors and to the competition of other species. As far as weeds are concerned, species may be only relatively calciphilous, but genuinely calcifuge species, the control being climatic in the former case and physiological in the second.The measures of modern agriculture bring about a gradual extinction of sensitive species from the limit of their range towards their centre of distribution, where they can find refuge habitats in the natural vegetation. The sensitivity of such species (also against herbicides) seems to increase towards their limits. Resistant species occur with increasing densities after the removal of their competitors. In addition, they are able to enlarge their area and to invade sites, where they had not been able to compete before, or sites where they could not previously bear the environmental conditions together with the competition of the rich weed flora.As the complex climatic gradients responsible for the ranges of weed species show smooth transitions, the alteration of species composition in weed communities is also a gradual one. Kinetic and equilibrium studies of the binding of several phenanthridines and acridines to DNA have been performed to investigate the physical processes underlying the direct ligand transfer mechanism of drug-DNA interaction· Substitution of the 6-phenyl ring of dimidium with a p-carboxyl residue, or complete removal of either the 6-substituent or the 3-amino group, does not prevent the phenanthridine chromophore from transferring directly between binding sites. Loss of the aromatic ring increases association rate constants three- to ninefold and enhances dissociation rates by factors of up to 12; the rates of direct transfer and dissociation from site 1 are the most perturbed. The presence of a phenyl ring stabilizes the site 1 complex and lowers the binding constant to site 2. Introduction of the p-carboxyl group does not affect the equilibrium distribution of bound forms but produces equivalent increases (2·5-fold) in forward and reverse rate constants for binding to site 1 and for the direct transfer step. The 3-amino group greatly stabilizes the site 1 complex. Its removal accelerates all kinetic processes except for the reverse transfer step; the transfer rate is enhanced 25-fold and binding to site 2 is increased 12-fold. The dissociation rate from site 1 rises by a factor of 45 and that from site 2 by a factor of 5·8.10-Methyl-9-aminoacridine binds via the direct transfer pathway with rate and equilibrium constants similar to those of the 3-desamino derivative of ethidium. This compound provides the first fully characterized example of an acridine that utilizes bimolecular transfer. By contrast, rivanol (6,9-diamino-2-ethoxyacridine) interacts with DNA via a two-step sequential mechanism analogous to that seen with proflavine, yet its intrinsic association constant is three times higher. This results from tighter ‘external’ attachment to the helix, together with a decrease in equilibrium constant for the insertion step, which is markedly slower than that of proflavine. There appears to be a simple relation between the apparent enthalpy of binding and the number of extracyclic amino substituents on the intercalating chromophore.We propose that the two bound forms that participate in direct ligand transfer represent molecules intercalated via one or other of the grooves of DNA, and that the transfer pathway corresponds to exchange of drug between the wide groove of one helix and the narrow groove of another. The ability to form strongly bound complexes at the surface of the helix appears to play a major role in determining the mechanism of ligand binding.  相似文献

生态过程模型的发展为研究者在长时间序列和区域尺度的研究提供了便利, 但模型模拟的准确性受到模型自身结构、模型参数估计合理性的影响。敏感性分析能够定量或定性筛选出对模型模拟结果影响较大的敏感参数, 是模型参数校准过程中的重要工具, 也是建模和应用的先决条件。该文以阔叶红松林为研究对象, 采用全局敏感性分析方法——傅里叶幅度灵敏度检验扩展法(EFAST)对Biome-BGC模型的生理生态参数进行了敏感性分析, 分别分析了红松(Pinus koraiensis)和阔叶树的净初级生产力(NPP)、蒸散(ET)对参数变化的敏感性。结果表明: (1)模拟红松NPP的不确定性高于阔叶树, 但二者的模拟ET的不确定性均较小。阔叶树的NPPET对生理生态参数的敏感性总体上都小于红松。(2)无论是红松、阔叶或其他植被类型, 模拟NPP均表现出对叶片碳氮比、细根碳氮比、比叶面积(SLA)和冠层截留系数的敏感性, 这4个参数的高敏感性主要是由模型自身结构所决定的, 与植被类型和研究地区的关系较小。对模拟ET而言, 细根与叶片碳分配比、新茎与新叶碳分配比和SLA均是影响红松和阔叶树ET的敏感参数, 但红松ET主要受参数与参数间的二阶或多阶交互作用的间接影响, 而阔叶树ET则主要是受到敏感参数直接效应的影响。(3)除了上述影响红松和阔叶树碳水通量的共性参数外, 诸如核酮糖-1,5-二磷酸羧化酶中叶氮含量、叶片与细根周转率、所有叶面积与投影叶面积之比等也是对模拟结果有影响的重要参数, 但是其敏感程度随物种不同和研究区不同而不同, 所以这类参数可以根据具体情况进行参数本地化, 对于其他不敏感参数则可以采用模型缺省值。  相似文献
