Red alder (Alnus rubra Bong.) and sitka alder (A. viridis ssp. sinuata [Regel] Löve & Löve) are nitrogen-fixing woody species that grow sympatrically along the Pacific coast of North America. Red alder is found in poorly drained lowlands, as well as in soils of moist upland slopes, whereas sitka alder generally colonizes well-drained soils. To identify factors that contribute to flood tolerance, we conducted greenhouse experiments subjecting both species to a 20-day flood and 10-day recovery and red alder to a 50-day flood and 20-day recovery. We determined the effect of this stress on nitrogenase activity, root and nodule alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) activity, lenticel and adventitious root development, relative growth rate (RGR), and leaf gas exchange. After 24 h of flooding, nitrogenase activity could not be detected in either species. Limited nitrogenase activity did return in red alder at the end of a 10-day recovery following the 20-day flood, but sitka alder showed no recovery of nitrogenase activity. After 50 days of continuous flooding, red alder nitrogenase activity returned to pretreatment levels. Red alder root and nodule ADH activity was more than twice that of sitka alder under flooded conditions. Sitka alder showed extensive root mortality and leaf abscission over the same 20-day flooding period. Flooded red alder exhibited an initial decline in root RGR, but recovered between days 10 and 20 with the formation of adventitious roots. Furthermore, initiation of adventitious roots in red alder coincided with an increase in stomatal conductance without a similar recovery of carbon dioxide exchange rate. Sitka alder formed few adventitious roots, lost much of its root and leaf biomass, and showed no restoration of growth during flooding or recovery. Different responses of red and sitka alder to flooding serve as a partial explanation for the different patterns of distribution of these species and suggest some adaptations of red alder that permit flood tolerance.  相似文献

Chlorophyll (Chl) a, b and (a+b) contents were measured in eleven cultivated and wild species of Lamiaceae collected from different environments. In nine of these eleven species, belonging to the subfamily Nepetoidea, the Chl a/b ratio was low. This suggests a prevailing shade aspect, regardless of collection sites and cultivated or wild origin.  相似文献

Abstract. A competitive effect hierarchy for 15 Namaqualand pioneer plant species was established by using the mean mass of the phytometer (Dimorphotheca sinuata) when grown in combination with itself and 14 other species. There were no clear groupings of species in the hierarchy. This competitive hierarchy (gradient) indicated which species are strong competitors (resulting in a low phytometer mass) with D. sinuata and which species are weak competitors (resulting in a high phytometer mass). Each plant species has a certain combination of plant traits which determines its life history strategy and competitive ability. Regressions of various plant traits (measured on plants grown singly) against phytometer biomass indicated which traits were significantly correlated. The traits, most being size-related, were: maximum shoot mass, total mass, stem mass, reproductive mass, leaf area, stem allocation, specific leaf area (SLA), vegetative height × diameter, leaf area ratio (LAR); and mean number of days to flower initiation. A forward stepwise multiple regression of the significant traits was used to determine an equation to predict competitive effect.  相似文献

We have investigated the role of inositol triphosphate, Ins(1,4,5)P3, in the transduction of the hypertrehalosaemic and hyperprolinaemic signal of the endogenous neuropeptide Mem-CC in the cetoniid beetle Pachnoda sinuata. Flight and injection of Mem-CC into the haemocoel of the beetle induce an increase of Ins(1,4,5)P3 levels in the fat body of the beetle. When Mem-CC is co-injected with U 73122, which is an inhibitor of phospholipase C, this effect is abolished. Mem-CC also elevates Ins(1,4,5)P3 concentration in fat body pieces in vitro. The increase in Ins(1,4,5)P3 levels is tissue-specific and does not occur in brain and flight muscles. Elevation of the Ins(1,4,5)P3 levels upon injection of Mem-CC is time- and dose-dependent: the maximum response is reached after 3 min and a dose of 10 pmol is needed. Compounds that mimic the action of cAMP (cpt-cAMP, forskolin) do not influence the concentration of Ins(1,4,5)P3, while those that stimulate G-proteins (aluminium fluoride and cholera toxin) cause an increase of Ins(1,4,5)P3 levels. The application (in vivo and in vitro) of F-Ins(1,4,5)P3, an Ins(1,4,5)P3 analogue that penetrates the cell membrane, causes a mobilisation of carbohydrate reserves via the activation of glycogen phosphorylase but does not stimulate proline synthesis. In addition, U 73122 abolishes the hypertrehalosaemic but not the hyperprolinaemic effect of Mem-CC. The results suggest that the hypertrehalosaemic signal of Mem-CC is mediated via an increase of Ins(1,4,5)P3 levels in the fat body of P. sinuata.  相似文献
