Summary Mate detection success of male grey-sided voles,Clethrionomys rufocanus, in relation to the spatial distribution of sexually receptive females was studied in an experimental island population. The spatiotemporal distribution of receptive females was controlled by containing females in small, mobile wire-mesh cages, whereas the response by free-ranging males was monitored by means of radiotelemetry. Males were on average more successful in finding oestrous females when females were spatially clumped than when females were spatially overdispersed. In addition, the variance (CV) in male mate detecting success was highest when females had an overdispersed spatial distribution. These results are consistent with predictions from a theoretical model (Ims, 1988b) analysing the effect of mate distribution on male mating success, and with empirical results on prey detection success of predators searching for prey. 相似文献

Summary In gene-for-gene systems, specificity of hostparasite interactions is most often estimated qualitatively using the symbols +, –, (i.e. susceptibility and/or resistance). In large sets (interaction patterns) it becomes impossible to analyze numerous data by mere comparison. This is overcome by application of cluster analysis. In our experiments the methods in question were used to estimate the data obtained in a study on interactions between more than 220 Lactuca sativa cultivars and 12 Bremia lactucae physiological races (isolates) of Czechoslovak origin. The matrix of similarity coefficients was analyzed by hierarchical clustering. Similarity and/or dissimilarity of host R-genotypes was graphically expressed using the method of two principal components. The results obtained are related to genetic constitution of race specific resistance of the host and the possibility of predicting effective resistance sources. 相似文献

First and fourth instars of three birch aphid species were exposed to first and fourth instars of Adalia bipunctata (L.), the most common aphid predator on silver birch, Betula pendula Roth, in northern California. Defensive behavior differed by aphid species. Euceraphis betulae (Koch) (Eb), the most successful escapee, was highly mobile and frequently walked away from coccinellid larvae. Betulaphis brevipilosa Börner (Bb), a flat, sessile species, was the least successful aphid at actively escaping from A. bipunctata larvae, but could passively escape detection when coccinellid larvae walked over nymphs and did not perceive them. Active escape behavior was much safer for aphids than passive avoidance of detection. Both instars of Eb and fourth instars of Callipterinella calliptera (Hartig) (Cc) escaped from coccinellid larvae more frequently when approached from the front, apparently using vision for pre-contact detection of A. bipunctata. These aphids avoided physical contact with larger predators more often than with smaller predators. Level of predation by A. bipunctata on these three aphid species is dependent upon types of aphid defense.
Résumé Des larves de premier et troisième stades de 3 espèces de pucerons du bouleau: Betulaphis brevipilosa, Callipterinella calliptera et Euceraphis betulae ont été exposées aux attaques des larves du premier et du quatrième stades d'Adalia bipunctata, prédateur le plus fréquent de pucerons sur Betula pendula en Californie du Nord. Le comportement défensif dépend beaucoup de l'espèce de puceron. E. betulae, qui s'échappe avec le plus de succès, est très mobile et s'écarte fréquemment des larves agressives de coccinelles. B. brevipilosa, espèce plate, sessile, a le moins de succès dans la protection active contre les attaques des larves de A. bipunctata, mais elle peut échapper passivement à la détection des larves de coccinelles qui ne peuvent pas les discerner lorsqu'elles circulent parmi les larves de pucerons. Two litters of rattlesnakes (Crotalus enyo; n = 6 per litter) were raised in large cages and small plastic boxes, respectively. No significant differences in exploration of a novel environment were observed between the litters, or between either of them and a group of wild-caught C. enyo, suggesting that the common practice of rearing baby snakes in small cages has no debilitating consequences on these measures. In the absence of differences between the litters, the two samples were pooled and additional analyses revealed the existence of reliable individual variation. Experiment 2 compared the two litters and the wild-caught snakes on measures of prey-directed behavior. The two captive-reared litters did not differ, but both exhibited lower levels of strike-induced chemosensory searching than did wild-caught snakes. 相似文献

Maximum consumption rates were determined for two carabids, Bembidion lampros Herbst. and Pterostichus cupreus L., feeding on the cereal aphid Rhopalosiphum padi L. at different temperatures in the laboratory. Mean daily consumption increased with increasing temperature for both species, B. lampros consuming a maximum of 16 1–3 instar nymphs and 9 apterous adult aphids at 25°C. P. cupreus was particularly voracious and consumed 125 apterous adult R. padi per day at 20°C. The behaviour of both species was analysed by video filming starved beetles, maintained at different constant temperatures, in arenas sown with spring barley. The behavioural components (1) still; (2) run/walk; (3) search and (4) confrontation were identified and were common to both species. P. cupreus was more active over the temperature range tested; B. lampros was inactive under 10°C. The proportion of time spent searching, number of plants searched, and velocity increased with increasing temperature for both species. When observed in similar arenas seeded with R. padi colonies, individuals of P. cupreus significantly increased their time spent searching in arenas with increasing aphid density. Following discovery of an aphid colony, individuals climbed and searched the host plant and its nearest neighbours. Plants in aphid free arenas were rarely climbed. B. lampros was not observed climbing in either aphid free arenas or in arenas with increasing aphid densities, and did not significantly increase its time spent searching in response to increased prey density. The few B. lampros that found aphids caught them walking on the soil surface. The relative efficiences of these two carabids as predators of R. padi are discussed, and the results are compared with similar studies elsewhere with predators of Sitobion avenae on winter wheat.
Résumé Les taux maximum de consommation de R. padi L. à différentes températures ont été déterminés au laboratoire chez deux carabes, B. lampros Herbstet P. cupreus L. La consommation moyenne a augmenté avec la température chez les deux espèces, B. lampros consommant un maximum de 15,9 larves des stades 1 à 3 et 9,1 pucerons adultes aptères, à 25°C. P. cupreus a été particulièrement vorace et a consommé 125,3 adultes aptères par jour à 20°C. Le comportement des deux espèces a été observé en filmant en vidéo des carabes à jeun, maintenus à différentes températures constantes, dans des enceintes semées en orge de printemps. Des éléments du comportement, communs aux deux espèces, ont été définis: 1) immabilité, 2) marche et course, 3) recherche, 4) affrontement. P. cupreus a été plus actif à toutes les températures, B. lamprosa été inactif au-dessous de 10°C. La part de temps consacrée à la recherche, le nombre de plantes prospectées, et la vitesse ont augmenté avec la température chez les deux espèces. Dans des enceintes similaires colonisées par R. padi, P. cupreus a significativement augmenté le temps consacré à la recherche dans les enceintes, parallèlement à l'augmentation de la densité des pucerons. Après la découverte d'une colonie de pucerons, P. cupreus escalade et prospecte la plante et ses voisines immédiates; tandis que les plantes des enceintes sans pucerons sont rarement escaladées. B. lampros n'a pas été observé escaladant des plantes d'enceintes avec ou sans pucerons, et il n'a pas accru son temps de prospection en fonction de la densité de pucerons. Les quelques B. lampros qui ont capturé des pucerons l'ont fait lorsque ceux-ci marchaient sur la surface du sol. La discussion a porté sur l'efficacité relative des deux carabes comme prédateurs de R. padi, et les résultats ont été comparés à ceux d'études du même type, menées ailleurs, avec des prédateurs de Sitobion avenae sur blé d'hiver.相似文献

Three species of hemipteran predators preyed differently upon 1st instarHeliothis punctiger Wallengren larvae.Cermatulus nasalis consumed more larvae thanOechalia schellenbergii which consumed more larvae thanTropiconabis nigrolineatus. All the species consumed significantly less 1st instar larvae on plants than what they consumed in Petri-dishes. Fifth instar predators showed significant differences in
terms of prey consumption due to sex independent of searching conditions. Only 4th and 5th instars ofT. nigrolineatus attacked and captured 2nd instars ofH. punctiger larvae. The other 2 species however readily attacked and consumed 2nd instarH. punctiger larvae. Their prey consumption was similar in Petri-dishes and on plants.
Only 5th instars ofT. nigrolineatus could subdue and capture 3rd instarH. punctiger larvae. Second instar pentatomids captured just one 3rd instar larva but older instars killed and ate more. Fourth instarH. punctiger larvae were immune to attacks by allT. nigrolineatus and younger pentatomids due to their defense ploys but 5th instar pentatomids could subdue and capture them.
None of the predators captured 5th instarH. punctiger larvae except few 5th instar females ofC. naslis andO. schellenbergii.

The discovery of isolated patches of prey by the natural enemies of the cottony-cushion scaleIcerya purchasi Maskell was tested in the field on potted plants ofAcacia baileyana and citrus between November and February in South Australia. The survival of scales to adults in patches in the 4 fortnightly
releases (cohort sets) was not significantly different between location-1 (under anAcacia tree harbouring scales and its natural enemies) and location-2 (about 500 m away from the nearest host plant of the scale).
The temporal distribution of mortality in the scale cohorts was described by the Weibull model. The proportion of scales surviving
at the 2 locations (on the 3rd & 6th fornight) was not significantly different suggesting that the total effect of all the mortality factors on the scales at
the 2 locations was the same.
The trends in prey patches destroyed in time could be explained from the period of activity of the natural enemies in the
field.Rodolia cardinalis (Mulsant) had discovered the prey patches within a fortnight of the release of scale crawlers. The results substantiate earlier
reports thatRodolia can find and destroy isolated scale colonies.

Amino acid sequences of enzymes that catalyze hydrolysis or phosphorolysis of the N-glycosidic bond in nucleosides and nucleotides (nucleosidases and phosphoribosyltransferases) were explored using computer methods for database similarity search and multiple alignment. Two new families, each including bacterial and eukaryotic enzymes, were identified. Family I consists of Escherichia coli AMP hydrolase (Amn), uridine phosphorylase (Udp), purine phosphorylase (DeoD), uncharacterized proteins from E. coli and Bacteroides uniformis, and, unexpectedly, a group of plant stress-inducible proteins. It is hypothesized that these plant proteins have evolved from nucleosidases and may possess nucleosidase activity. The proteins in this new family contain 3 conserved motifs, one of which was found also in eukaryotic purine nucleosidases, where it corresponds to the nucleoside-binding site. Family II is comprised of bacterial and eukaryotic thymidine phosphorylases and anthranilate phosphoribosyltransferases, the relationship between which has not been suspected previously. Based on the known tertiary structure of E. coli thymidine phosphorylase, structural interpretation was given to the sequence conservation in this family. The highest conservation is observed in the N-terminal alpha-helical domain, whose exact function is not known. Parts of the conserved active site of thymidine phosphorylases and anthranilate phosphoribosyltransferases were delineated. A motif in the putative phosphate-binding site is conserved in family II and in other phosphoribosyltransferases. Our analysis suggests that certain enzymes of very similar specificity, e.g., uridine and thymidine phosphorylases, could have evolved independently. In contrast, enzymes catalyzing such different reactions as AMP hydrolysis and uridine phosphorolysis or thymidine phosphorolysis and phosphoribosyl anthranilate synthesis are likely to have evolved from common ancestors. 相似文献
