SUMMARY

In shallow lakes a siltation system develops when wind driven water turbulence erodes the lake floor, silt is resuspended and transported by means of waterdrift into the littoral vegetation. Here, due to the resistance of the vegetation, the turbulence is reduced and the silt deposited. Through this mechanism, the prevailing winds have a major rôle in the erosion and siltation pattern, lake morphology, vegetation pattern and in the mixing of water and nutrients from the open water and the reedswamp and vice versa. The model explains the uneven distribution of vegetation at the lakes Neusiedlersee (Austria) and Chilwa (Malawi) satisfactorily, if one assumes a positive correlation between siltation and reedswamp growth and spread.  相似文献

We studied the short-term impact of sediment load on the photosynthetic performance of Saccharina latissima sporophytes exposed to ultraviolet radiation (UVR). The algae were collected from different sediment-influenced environments in Svalbard in August 2007. Initial optimum quantum yield (F v/F m) of sediment-covered sporophytes was significantly higher compared to sediment-free sporophytes. Experimental sediment coating on blade discs had a photoprotective function by screening out 92% of the weighted UV-B (UVery) treatment. No UVR-induced photoinhibition was observed in sediment-coated blade discs while sediment removal caused a reduction in F v/F m not only after 12-h UVR exposure but also after 6-h recovery in low white light compared to the initial value. Thus, sediment coating has a short-term functional significance in mitigating the negative effect of UVR on photosynthesis of an important kelp species and set a baseline for further studies. Impacts of increased sediment loads on the ecology of lakes   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Increased sediment loading comprises one of the most important and pervasive anthropogenic impacts on aquatic ecosystems globally. In spite of this, little is known of the overall effects of increased sediment loads on lakes. By modifying both bottom-up and top-down ecological processes and restructuring energy flow pathways, increased sediment loads not only alter biotic assemblage structure and ecological functioning significantly, but frequently result in reduced biological diversity and productivity. Although lake food-webs can be subsidised to some extent by the adsorption of organic carbon to fine sediments, trophic structure and the composition of biotic assemblages remain likely to be modified considerably. The mineralogy and particle size of sediments and the availability of nutrients, by influencing both the scale and nature of impacts, are key determinants of the overall effects of increased sediment loads on lake ecosystems. Although interactions with other global anthropogenic pressures, such as invasion by exotic species and climate change, are likely to be significant, little remains known about the nature or likely strength of those interactions. Widespread increases in sediment loading to lakes have, therefore, profound implications for the conservation and management of global aquatic biological diversity.  相似文献

Benthic surveys carried out in 1989 (literature data), 1995, and 2001 (original data) revealed changes in the structure of soft bottom communities of Wrangel Bay (Peter the Great Bay, Sea of Japan), where a deep-water port of Vostochnyi is situated. The functioning of the port has caused no significant environmental pollution by heavy metals, hydrocarbons, and other pollutants. Bottom dredging and the siltation induced by it have drastically lowered the benthos biomass, changed benthic communities, and altered their trophic structure. Sestonophages have disappeared nearly altogether being replaced by detrivores. The ecological state of the benthos is characterized as unstable.  相似文献

A deep Main river was examined to determine the effects of selected environmental variables on benthic invertebrate community structure. Thirty-three sites were sampled by divers using artificial substrates. The Bray-Curtis ordination was used to establish community types based upon combinations of current velocity, siltation, and organic detritus. While some invertebrates were tightly clustered within particular communities, most taxa tended to concentrate in one community type but were not excluded from others. The results tended to support the individualistic hypothesis of species distribution.  相似文献

To provide an overview for the State Pollution Control Commission of NSW, 102 lakes were visited throughout the state during the 1988–9 summer to ascertain their ecological condition. The sites chosen covered a spectrum of geomorphic types in approximate proportion to their perceived relative abundance. Field work concentrated on some physicochemical parameters and on zooplankton and littoral invertebrates. A summary of these features of the lakes of NSW is given. The most widespread problem is eutrophication, though for many lakes changes in trophic status could be part of wider changes in lakes since European settlement. A significant number of lakes suffer eroded shorelines and sedimentation. The introduced mosquito fish, Gambusia affinis, is associated with decreased diversity mainly in coastal lakes where also alien plants may be pestiferous. A few lakes in western areas have their flooding regime altered, while a number in the east are drained. With few exceptions there are no management programs to improve the conservation status of degraded lakes in NSW.  相似文献

The distributions of the fish species were examined in relation to environmental variables, to evaluate the effects of environmental degradation on the fish community of Batata Lake, a typical Amazonian clearwater lake. From 1979 to 1989, tailings composed of water and clay, extracted from bauxite by water jets, were discharged into Batata Lake. The tailings spread into about 30% of the lake’s area, where the level of the lake bottom rose and turbidity increased. In the present study, multivariate analyses were performed on data for environmental parameters and fish density and biomass. Fish were collected with gillnets during the annual hydrological cycle (filling, flood, drawdown and dry periods), in the silted area, the partly silted area (intermediate) and the natural area. Values of the Shannon index, density and biomass were compared among areas and periods to evaluate the effects of the tailings on community structure. Sediment resuspension, which reduces transparency, is accentuated in shallow water, and was the main factor regulating differences in the community structure between the natural and silted areas. The decrease in transparency occurs mainly during the filling period in the silted area and during the low-water period in the silted and intermediate areas, when sediment resuspension increases concentrations of nutrients and chlorophyll-a. The strong influence of migratory and piscivore species in low-transparency waters is likely associated with the greater bacterioplankton productivity and turnover rate observed by other authors in the silted area, increasing the importance of the heterotrophic food chain in Batata Lake. Reduction of transparency in the silted area was a selective factor for fish species. The death of part of the flooded forest vegetation was decisive in lowering densities of the igapó-associated species in the silted area. The unconsolidated substrate, the death of part of the igapó forest and the negative effects of low transparency – inhibiting resident visually oriented species in the affected areas – are the main factors causing the low diversity in the silted area as a whole. The correlations between CPUEs, conductivity and nutrients and chlorophyll-a concentrations do not appear to reflect cause–effect relationships, indicating that these environmental parameters are poor predictors of fish density in Batata Lake.  相似文献

Schottera nicaeensis (Phyllophoraceae, Gigartinales), presently known only from the western Mediterranean Sea and the northeastern Atlantic coasts of Europe, is reported for the first time from the Melbourne region of Port Phillip Bay in southeastern Australia. The species is perennial in the Bay, although tetrasporophytes and cystocarpic plants are commonest in late spring and early summer. This seasonal pattern, and the vegetative habits of plants during the whole of the year, show similarities to populations described by other workers for Northern Hemisphere localities where comparable water temperature and daylength regimes obtain. The small Australian S. nicaeensis community is found at 5–9 m depths and is concentrated on lighthouse foundations adjacent to the main Port of Melbourne shipping channel. It is hypothesized that the species has recently been introduced into Port Phillip Bay, and a scenario for its possible means of import on ships is suggested.  相似文献

Rocky shores provide a harsh environment for marine organisms andwe briefly discuss natural sources of variation in community structure beforeconsidering anthropogenic impacts in detail. We review impacts caused by (a) acutedisturbances: oil spills, toxic algal blooms and (b) chronic disturbances: nutrient pollution, oil, heavy metals, pesticides, antifouling paints, collecting, trampling/habitatdegradation, siltation and introduced species. Community level effects are emphasisedthroughout and illustrative examples are drawn from field-based case studies. Particularattention is given to the lessons learned from oil spills and the effect of chronicpollution by tributyltin on dogwhelks, the impacts of which ranged from the biochemical tocommunity levels of organisation. Impacts are placed in a global and historicalperspective and the potential for the recovery of shores under appropriate management isdiscussed. Finally we consider the relative merits of the multivariate and univariateapproaches to studying impacted communities and suggest priorities for future research.  相似文献
