Cuticles of North Queensland rainforest Proteaceae were examined using light and scanning electron microscopy. The genera of North Queensland rainforest Proteaceae are mostly endemic and composed of one or few species, with greatest diversity in the granitic uplands of the region. Knowledge of cuticular morphology may be an important tool in determining the true affinities of several undescribed taxa in the region and can be used to explore hypotheses relating to the history of the Proteaceae. Some species exhibit purported xeromorphic features of thick cuticles, sunken stomates and dense trichome cover on the abaxial surface. Grevillea , Banksieae and Stenocarpus are believed to have radiated into open, much less mesic environments. In the former two taxa this can be interpreted in terms of xeromorphic features expressed in their cuticular morphologies, whereas in Stenocarpus amphistomaty in species of open habitats suggests an alternative mode of evolution more related to physiological factors. Several Cainozoic proteaceous macrofossils temporally and spatially far removed from North Queensland possess cuticular morphologies very similar or identical to extant rainforest taxa in the region. 相似文献

In some plants, stomata are exclusively located in epidermal depressions called crypts. It has been argued that crypts function to reduce transpiration; however, the occurrence of crypts in species from both arid and wet environments suggests that crypts may play another role. The genus Banksia was chosen to examine quantitative relationships between crypt morphology and leaf structural and physiological traits to gain insight into the functional significance of crypts. Crypt resistance to water vapour and CO2 diffusion was calculated by treating crypts as an additional boundary layer partially covering one leaf surface. Gas exchange measurements of polypropylene meshes confirmed the validity of this approach. Stomatal resistance was calculated as leaf resistance minus calculated crypt resistance. Stomata contributed significantly more than crypts to leaf resistance. Crypt depth increased and accounted for an increasing proportion of leaf resistance in species with greater leaf thickness and leaf dry mass per area. All Banksia species examined with leaves thicker than 0.6 mm had their stomata in deep crypts. We propose that crypts function to facilitate CO2 diffusion from the abaxial surface to adaxial palisade cells in thick leaves. This and other possible functions of stomatal crypts, including a role in water use, are discussed. 相似文献

Evidence regarding the effect of temperature and rainfall on gall‐inducing insects is contradictory: some studies indicate that species richness of gall‐inducing insects increases as environments become hotter and drier, while others suggest that these factors have no effect. The role of plant species richness in determining species richness of gall‐inducing insects is also controversial. These apparent inconsistencies may prove to be due to the influence of soil fertility and the uneven distribution of gall‐inducing insect species among plant taxa. The current study tested hypotheses about determinants of gall‐inducing insect species richness in a way different to previous studies. The number of gall‐inducing insect species, and the proportion of species with completely enclosed galls (more likely to give protection against heat stress and desiccation), were measured in replicate plots at five locations along a 500‐km N‐S transect in the seasonal tropics of the Northern Territory, Australia. There is a strong temperature–rainfall gradient along this transect during the wet season. Plant species lists had already been compiled for each collection plot. All plots were at low elevation in eucalypt savannah growing on infertile soils. There was no evidence to suggest that hot, dry environments in Australia have more gall‐inducing insect species than cooler, wetter environments, or that degree of enclosure of galls is related to protecting insects from heat stress and desiccation. The variable number of gall‐inducing insect species on galled plant species meant that plant species richness did not influence gall species richness. Confirmation is still required that low soil fertility does not mask temperature–rainfall effects and that galls in the study region are occupied predominantly in the wet season, when the temperature–rainfall gradient is most marked. 相似文献

Evergreen oaks are an emblematic element of the Mediterranean vegetation and have a leaf phenotype that seems to have remained unchanged since the Miocene. We hypothesise that variation of the sclerophyll phenotype among Iberian populations of Quercus coccifera is partly due to an ulterior process of ecotypic differentiation. We analysed the genetic structure of nine Iberian populations using ISSR fingerprints, and their leaf phenotypes using mean and intracanopy plasticity values of eight morphological (leaf angle, area, spinescence, lobation and specific area) and biochemical traits (VAZ pool, chlorophyll and β-carotene content). Climate and soil were also characterised at the population sites. Significant genetic and phenotypic differences were found among populations and between NE Iberia and the rest of the populations of the peninsula. Mean phenotypes showed a strong and independent correlation with both genetic and geographic distances. Northeastern plants were smaller, less plastic, with smaller, spinier and thicker leaves, a phenotype consistent with the stressful conditions that prevailed in the steppe environments of the refugia within this geographic area during glaciations. These genetic, phenotypic, geographic and environmental patterns are consistent with previously reported palaeoecological and common evidence. Such consistency leads us to conclude that there has been a Quaternary divergence within the sclerophyllous syndrome that was at least partially driven by ecological factors. 相似文献

While drying, detached leaves produced ultrasound acoustic emissions (UAE) comparable to emissions from stem and twig wood. Experiments on Ilex aquifolium L. showed that the main source of these signals was cavitation in the veins, to which conduits and fibres probably both contributed. Regions of the leaf blade with abundant mesophyll and only small veins emitted few signals. More signals were counted on the adaxial side of the midrib than on the abaxial one and on the proximal third than on the distal one, in accordance with the anatomical structure. Sound attenuation was pronounced. Eight species were compared with respect to cavitation behaviour, field water relations and pressure–volume curves, and the data showed differences in cumulative number of events and resistance of leaves to cavitation. Data were generally in good agreement with anatomical structure and habitat preferences. The number of signals per conduit counted on cross-sections was in some leaves much higher than unity, which suggests short xylem elements or an acoustic activity of cells other than conduits. There was no correlation between cavitation threshold or cumulative number of signals and the degree of sclerophylly; unexpectedly, there was a correlation between the cumulative number of signals at a water potential of -1.3 MPa and the bulk modulus of elasticity. 相似文献

Studies of leaf traits often focus on tradeoffs between growth and resource conservation, but little is known about variation in the mechanical traits that influence resource conservation. This study investigates how leaf mechanical traits vary across matorral vegetation in central Chile, how they correlate with environmental factors, and how these trends compare at a broader geographic scale. Leaf toughness, strength, stiffness, and associated traits were measured in five matorral types in central Chile, and relationships with soil N and P and climate variables were assessed. Trends with soil and climate were then analyzed across shrubland and woodland in Chile, Western Australia, and New Caledonia. Chilean species varied in leaf mechanics and associated traits, both within and among matorral types, with more species in sclerophyll matorral having strong, tough, and stiff leaves than in arid and littoral matorral. Overall, leaves with high leaf dry mass per area were stiffer, tougher, stronger, thicker, denser, with more fiber, lignin, phenolics and fiber per unit protein and less protein: tannin activity and N and P per mass, forming a broad sclerophylly syndrome. Mechanical traits of matorral species were not correlated with soil N or P, or predictably with climate variables, except flexural stiffness (EIW) which correlated positively with annual reference evapotranspiration (ET0). However, soil P made strong independent contributions to variation in leaf mechanics across shrublands and woodlands of Chile, Western Australia, and New Caledonia, either separately (strength) or together with ET0 (toughness) explaining 46–90% of variation. Hence ET0 was predictive of EIW in Chilean matorral, whereas soil P was highly predictive of variation in leaf strength, and combined with ET0 was highly predictive of toughness, at a broader geographic scale. The biological basis of these relationships, however, may be complex. 相似文献

Abstract The annual time course of the water relations of six sclerophylls has been studied with the aim of: a) defining strategies adopted for withstanding summer water stress and b) to check whether their common sclerophyllous habitus could represent a case of convergent evolution devoted to a univocal functional role. In particular, Phillyrea latifolia L. showed to behave like a drought tolerant as indicated by deep summer drop in leaf water potential (Ψ1) to near the full turgor loss point (Ψlp) and in leaf relative water content (RWC) as caused by xylem cavitation. Prunus laurocerasus L. and Laurus nobilis L. showed to be drought avoiding water spenders in that their Ψ1 dropped in summer causing prompt recovery in RWC. This was made possible by low cavitation in their twigs. Ilex aquifolium L. was a typical drought avoiding water saver in that both Ψ1 and RWC remained at very high levels throughout the year. Quercus ilex L. behaved like a drought avoiding water spender which switched to drought tolerance in the warmest period of the year. This was explained by its high vulnerability to cavitation. The extreme heterogeneity of the six species studied suggested that sclerophylly cannot be interpreted as an anatomical feature leading to a specific and unifying functional role, at least as regards drought resistance. 相似文献
