Summary Triticales (XTriticosecale Wittmack) at three ploidy levels (8x, 6x, 4x, x=7) were crossed with diploid rye (Secale cereale L.) to produce a solitary hypopentaploid hybrid (2n=32), and a number of tetraploid (2n=4x=28) and triploid (2n=3x=21) hybrids. The hybrids exhibited a morphology which was intermediate between the parents. The number of bivalents ranged from 1–7 (4.65 per cell) in hypopentaploid, from 2–12 (7.13 per cell) in tetraploid and from 4–9 (6.84 per cell) in triploid hybrids. In 4x and 3x hybrids, trivalents and quadrivalents were also observed at low frequencies (range 0–1; mean 0.01–0.03 per cell). Chiasmata frequency was highest in triploid hybrids (12.44 per cell), lowest in hypopentaploid (5.37 per cell) and intermediate in tetraploids (10.54 per cell). More than 711 were found in 39.7% pollen mother cells (PMC's) in the 4x hybrids and in 5.0% PMCs in 3x hybrids. It is concluded that an increase in the relative proportion of wheat chromosomes in the hybrids had a slight suppression effect on homologous as well as homoeologous pairing of rye chromosomes. Contrary to this, the relative increase in rye complement promoted homoeologous pairing between wheat chromosomes. In triploid hybrids, the chiasmata frequency as well as the c value were the highest, suggesting that in tetraploid hybrids rye chromosomes had a reduced pairing (low frequency of ring bivalents).  相似文献

The ability of leaves to acclimate photosynthetically to low temperature was examined during leaf development in winter rye plants ( Secale cereale L. cv. Puma) grown at 20°C or at 6°C. All leaves grown at 6°C exhibit increased chlorophyll (Chl) levels per leaf area, higher rates of uncoupled, light-saturated photosystem I (PSI) electron transport, and slower increases in photosystem II (PSII) electron transport capacity, when compared with 20°C leaves. The stoiehiometry of PSI and PSII was estimated for each leaf age class by quantifying Chl in elcctrophorctic separations of Chl-protein complexes. The ratio of PSII/PSI electron transport in 20°C leaves is highly correlated with the ratio of core Chl a -proteins associated with PSII (CPa) to those associated with PSI (CP1). In contrast, PSII/PSI electron transport in 6°C leaves is not as well correlated with CPa/CP1 and is related, in part, to the amount and organization of light-harvesting Chl a/b -proteins associated with PSII. CPa/CP1 increases slowly in 6°C leaves, although the ratio of CPa/CP1 in mature 20°C and 6°C leaves is not different. The results suggest that increased PSI activity at low temperature is not related to an increase in the relative proportion of PSI and may reflect, instead, a regulatory change. Photosynthetic acclimation to low environmental temperature involves increased PSI activity in mature leaves shifted to 6°C. In leaves grown entirely at 6°C, however, acclimation includes both increased PSI activity and modifications in the rate of accumlation of PSII and in the organization of LHCII.  相似文献

Following a survey of a range of varieties of rye, mainly Secale cereale, for reaction to DDT, the mode of action of the pesticide in a susceptible variety was studied. Two sites of interaction of DDT with the photosynthetic electron transport chain were demonstrated. The first site of inhibition was on the oxidizing side of photosystem 2, between the sites of electron donation from diphenylcarbazide at pH 6.0 and pH 8.0 in Tris-washed chloroplasts. The second site of DDT inhibition was in the intermediate electron transport chain, and was demonstrated by using dichlorophenol-indophenol and phenyldiamines as electron donors in chloroplasts where electron flow from photosystem 2 was inhibited by 3-(3,4-dichlorophenyl)-1,1-dimethylurea. The sites are distinct from those characteristic of herbicides which affect photosynthetic electron flow.  相似文献

Graminaceous species can enhance iron (Fe) acquisition from sparingly soluble inorganic Fe(III) compounds by release of phytosiderophores (PS) which mobilize Fe(III) by chelation. In most graminaceous species Fe deficiency increases the rate of PS release from roots by a factor of 10–20, but in some species, for example sorghum, this increase is much less. The chemical nature of PS can differ between species and even cultivars.The various PS are similarly effective as the microbial siderophore Desferal (ferrioxamine B methane sulfonate) in mobilizing Fe(III) from a calcareous soil. Under the same conditions the synthetic chelator DTPA (diaethylenetriamine pentaacetic acid) is ineffective.The rate of Fe(III)PS uptake by roots of graminaceous species increases by a factor of about 5 under Fe deficiency. In contrast, uptake of Fe from both synthetic and microbial Fe(III) chelates is much lower and not affected by the Fe nutritional status of the plants. This indicates that in graminaceous species under Fe deficiency a specific uptake system for FePS is activated. In contrast, the specific uptake system for FePS is absent in dicots. In a given graminaceous species the uptake rates of the various FePS are similar, but vary between species by a factor of upto 3. In sorghum, despite the low rate of PS release, the rate of FePS uptake is particularly high.The results indicate that release of PS and subsequent uptake of FePS are under different genetic control. The high susceptibility of sorghum to Fe deficiency (lime-chlorosis) is most probably caused by low rates of PS release in the early seedling stage. Therefore in sorghum, and presumably other graminaceous species also, an increase in resistance to lime chlorosis could be best achieved by breeding for cultivars with high rates of PS release. In corresponding screening procedures attention should be paid to the effects of iron nutritional status and daytime on PS release as well as on rapid microbial degradation of PS.  相似文献

Rye seedlings, tillering plants and crop residues were allowed to decompose in model incubation experiments. Young tissues gave rise to high concentrations of allelochemicals, whereas crop residues did not produce inhibitors. Seven phenolic acids were identified in the investigated materials; p-hydroxybenzoic protocatechuic, gallic, vanillic, syringic, p-coumaric, ferulic as well as benzoic acid. However, neither the level of these acids nor the total content of phenolic compounds corresponded to the level of phytotoxicity determined in bioassays. This demonstrated that, apart from phenolics, other unidentified water-soluble organic compounds were also responsible for the toxicity of rye decomposition products. The relationship between the size of the light harvesting antenna to photosystem II (LHCII) and quenching of non-photochemical and dark level fluorescence was studied in wild-type rye (Secale cereale L. cv. Musketeer) and barley (Hordeum vulgare L. cv. Gunilla) as well as in the barley chlorophyll b-less chlorina F2 mutant (H. vulgare L. cv. Dornaria, chlorina-F2). Exposure for 10 min to an irradiance of 500 μmol m?2 s?1 resulted in a strong (0.71–0.73) non-photochemical (qs) quenching of the fluorescence yield in wild-type (WT) material, while the barley chlorina F2-mutant was quenched to 75% of this level. Relaxation of qs in darkness revealed a fast initial decay, related to relaxation of the high-energy-state dependent (qE) part of qs. Etiolated seedlings of rye and barley exposed to intermittent light (IML) for 36 cycles of 2 min light and 118 min darkness had suppressed Chl b and LHCII-production in both WT rye and barley, while the barley chlorina F2-mutant became totally devoid of all LHCII-polypeptides. It was found that the levels of qs and qs were similar in control grown barley chlorina F2 and IML-grown WT rye and barley, but qs was reduced by 30 to 35% and qs by 50 to 65%, respectively, as compared to control-grown. WT plants. No significant qs could be detected in IML-grown barley chlorina F2. It is clear, from these changes in in vivo fluorescence quenching in rye and barley that a significant level of qs is detectable even in the absence of LHCII. Only when the proximal antennae are totally absent, does qE completely disappear. We conclude that the presence of LHCII is not an absolute requirement for qE-quenching and suggest that distal as well as proximal antenna may contribute to qE in vivo.  相似文献

The effects of aluminium (Al) ions on the metabolism of root apical meristems were examined in 4-day-old seedlings of two cereals which differed in their tolerance to Al: wheat cv. Grana (Al-sensitive) and rye cv. Dakowskie Nowe (Al tolerant). During a 24 h incubation period in nutrient solutions containing 0.15 mM and 1.0 mM of Al for wheat and rye, respectively, the activity of first two enzymes in the pentose phosphate pathway (G-6-PDH and 6-PGDH) decreased in the sensitive cultivar. In the tolerant cultivar activities of these enzymes increased initially, then decreased slightly, and were at control levels after 24 h. In the Al-sensitive wheat cultivar a 50% reduction in the activity of 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase was observed in the presence of Al. Changes in enzyme activity were accompanied by changes in levels of G-6-P- the initial substrate in the pentose phosphate pathway. When wheat was exposed for 16 h to a nutrient solution containing aluminium, a 90% reduction in G-6-P concentration was observed. In the Al-tolerant rye cultivar, an increase and subsequently a slight decrease in G-6-P concentration was detected, and after 16 h of Al-stress the concentration of this substrate was still higher than in control plants. This dramatic Al-induced decrease in G-6-P concentration in the Al-sensitive wheat cultivar was associated with a decrease in both the concentration of glucose in the root tips as well as the activity of hexokinase, an enzyme which is responsible for phosphorylation of glucose to G-6-P. However, in the Al-tolerant rye cultivar, the activity of this enzyme remained at the level of control plants during Al-treatment, and the decrease in the concentration of glucose occurred at a much slower rate than in wheat. These results suggest that aluminium ions change cellular metabolism of both wheat and rye root tips. Plant growth and phosphorus (P) uptake of two selections of rye (Secale cereale L.) differing in length of root hairs, in response to mycorrhizal infection were investigated. Rye plants with short root hairs (SRH) had a greater length of root infected by Glomus intraradices (up to 32 m pot–1) than those with long root hairs (LRH) (up to 10 m pot–1). Application of P decreased the percentage of root length infected in both selections. In low-P soil, mycorrhizal infection increased shoot and root P concentration, especially in LRH plants. Generally, LRH had higher shoot dry weight than SRH plants. P uptake was increased both by LRH and by mycorrhizal infection. Differences in specific P uptake and P utilization efficiency between SRH and LRH plants were observed in non-mycorrhizal plants. With low P supply, P utilization efficiency (dry matter yield per unit of P taken up) of LRH plants increased with time. However, mycorrhizal infection reduced P utilization efficiency, particularly of SRH plants. SRH plants, which were agronomically less efficient (i.e. low dry matter yield at low P supply) were more responsive to either mycorrhizal infection or P addition than the LRH plants.
