To assess which hormones are capable of masculinizing the neural song system of zebra finch hatchlings, we implanted female hatchlings with estrogen (estradiol [E2], 75 μg, n = 9), testosterone (T, 75–88 μg, n = 13), androstenedione (AE, 75 μg, n = 7), progesterone (P, 117 μg, n = 10), or nothing (Blanks, n = 10) and compared these to unimplanted males (n = 7). Implants, consisting of a hormone and Silastic mixture encased in polyethylene tubing, were placed under the skin of the breast on the day of hatching. Birds were killed when they were subadult (58 to 68 days old). We measured volumes of area X, the higher vocal center (HVC), and the robust nucleus of the archistriatum (RA); measured soma sizes in the lateral magnocellular nucleus of the neostriatum (IMAN), HVC, and RA: and counted RA neurons. E2 masculinized all measures in the song system and nearly sex-reversed the size of RA neurons. T masculinized volumes of nuclei and soma sizes but not the number or spacing of RA neurons. E2 was always at least as effective as T in masculinizing measures of the song system and was usually more effective. AE and P did not significantly masculinize any measure. These data suggest that E2 is more potent than aromatizable androgens or P in masculinizing the female song system in development and that the action of E2 alone may be sufficient to masculinize the volume of song control nuclei and the size and number of neurons. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

Parkinson disease (PD) is the second most common neurodegenerative disorder after Alzheimer's disease, affecting 1–2% of the population over the age of 65. Both genetic and environmental factors trigger risks of and protection from PD. However, the molecular mechanism of PD is far from being clear. In this study, we downloaded the gene expression profile of PD from Gene Expression Omnibus and identified differentially expressed genes (DEGs) and dysfunctional pathways in PD patients compared with controls. To further understand how these pathways act together to account for the initiation of PD, we constructed a pathway crosstalk network by calculating the Jaccard index among pathways. A total of 873 DEGs and 16 dysfunctional pathways between PD patients and controls were identified. Through constructing a network of pathways, the relationships among PD pathways were visually presented by their interactions. Our results demonstrate the existence of crosstalk between different pathways in PD pathogenesis. These results not only may explain the causes of PD, but could also open the door to new therapeutic approaches for this disease.  相似文献

Acetate is present in lignocellulosic hydrolysates at growth inhibiting concentrations. Industrial processes based on such feedstock require strains that are tolerant of this and other inhibitors present. We investigated the effect of acetate on Saccharomyces cerevisiae and show that elevated acetate concentrations result in a decreased specific growth rate, an accumulation of cells in the G1 phase of the cell cycle, and an increased cell size. With the cytostat cultivation technology under previously derived optimal operating conditions, several acetate resistant mutants were enriched and isolated in the shortest possible time. In each case, the isolation time was less than 5 days. The independently isolated mutant strains have increased specific growth rates under conditions of high acetate concentrations, high ethanol concentrations, and high temperature. In the presence of high acetate concentrations, the isolated mutants produce ethanol at higher rates and titers than the parental strain and a commercial ethanol producing strain that has been analyzed for comparison. Whole genome microarray analysis revealed gene amplifications in each mutant. In one case, the LPP1 gene, coding for lipid phosphate phosphatase, was amplified. Two mutants contained amplified ENA1, ENA2, and ENA5 genes, which code for P‐type ATPase sodium pumps. LPP1 was overexpressed on a plasmid, and the growth data at elevated acetate concentrations suggest that LPP1 likely contributes to the phenotype of acetate tolerance. A diploid cross of the two mutants with the amplified ENA genes grew faster than either individual haploid parent strain when 20 g/L acetate was supplemented to the medium, which suggests that these genes contribute to acetate tolerance in a gene dosage dependent manner. A mark‐resight analysis under Pollock's robust design was applied to Indo‐Pacific bottlenose dolphins Tursiops aduncus in the Swatch‐of‐No‐Ground (SoNG) submarine canyon, Bangladesh, during the winter seasons of 2005–2009. Information from sightings of photo‐identified individuals (1,144) and unmarked individuals generated abundance estimates of 1,701 (95% confidence interval [CI]= 1,533–1,888), 1,927 (95% CI = 1,851–2,006), 2,150 (95% CI = 1,906–2,425), and 2,239 (95% CI = 1,985–2,524) individuals for seasons 1–4, respectively. This makes the population among the largest assessed of the species. Overall apparent survival was estimated as 0.958 (95% CI = 0.802–0.992). Interseasonal probabilities of transitioning to an unobservable state were estimated as 0.045, 0.363, and 0.300 for years 1–2, 2–3, and 3–4, respectively, and the overall probability of remaining in an unobservable state was 0.688. These probabilities, together with an apparent increase in abundance during the study period, indicate that the identified dolphins are part of a larger superpopulation moving throughout a more extensive geographic area. Of the photo‐identified dolphins, 28.2% exhibited injuries related to entanglements with fishing gear. This implies a strong potential for fatal interactions that could jeopardize the conservation status of the population, which otherwise appears favorable.  相似文献

The development of heart failure (HF) is a complex process that can be initiated by multiple etiologies. Identifying common functional modules associated with HF is a challenging task. Here, we developed a systems method to identify these common functional modules by integrating multiple expression profiles, protein interactions from four species, gene function annotations, and text information. We identified 1439 consistently differentially expressed genes (CDEGs) across HF with different etiologies by applying three meta-analysis methods to multiple HF-related expression profiles. Using a weighted human interaction network constructed by combining interaction data from multiple species, we extracted 60 candidate CDEG modules. We further evaluated the functional relevance of each module by using expression, interaction network, functional annotations, and text information together. Finally, five functional modules with significant biological relevance were identified. We found that almost half of the genes in these modules are hubs in the weighted network, and that these modules can accurately classify HF patients from healthy subjects. We also identified many significantly enriched biological processes that contribute to the pathophysiology of HF, including two new ones, RNA splicing and vesicle-mediated protein transport. In summary, we proposed a novel framework to analyze common functional modules related to HF with different etiologies. Our findings provide important insights into the complex mechanism of HF. Further biological experimentations should be required to validate these novel biological processes.  相似文献

Abstract: A common situation in capture-mark-recapture (CMR) studies on birds and other organisms is to capture individuals not belonging to the studied population only present during the short time of the capture session. Presence of such transient individuals affects demographic parameter estimation from CMR data. Methods exist to reduce biases on survival estimates in the presence of transients and have been shown to be particularly efficient within the Robust Design framework (several secondary capture sessions within a short time interval during which the studied population can be assumed closed). We present a new model to estimate population size accounting for transients. We first used simulated data to show that the method reduces positive biases due to transients. In a second step, we applied the method to a real CMR dataset on a reed warbler (Acrocephalus scirpaceus) population. Population size estimates are reduced by up to 50% when correcting for the presence of transients. Many field studies on managed animal populations use capture-recapture methodology to obtain crucial parameters of the focal population demography. The resulting data sets are used either to estimate population size ignoring the presence of transients, or to estimate vital rates, accounting for transients but overlooking abundance estimation. This study is concerned with the structure of variables having ellipsoidal distributions. In Part I it is shown that many normal-theory results in canonical analysis are exact for all ellipsoidal distributions under a specified model for sampling. In Part II similar conclusions are drawn regarding the use of principal components. These findings suggest using normal-theory procedures in canonical and principal components analyses as approximate large-sample procedures for distributions attracted to ellipsoidal stable laws.  相似文献
