1. It is hypothesised that ecological restoration in grasslands can induce an alternative stable state shift in vegetation. The change in vegetation influences insect community assemblages and allows for greater functional redundancy in pollination and refuge for native insect species. 2. Insect community assemblages at eight coastal California grassland sites were evaluated. Half of these sites had undergone restoration through active revegetation of native grassland flora and half were non‐restored. Insects were collected from Lupinus bicolor (Fabaceae) within 2 × 2‐m2 plots in spring 2017. Lupinus bicolor is a common native species that is used in California restoration projects, and home and state landscaping projects. 3. Ordination demonstrated that insect community assemblages were different between restored and non‐restored sites. These differences were seen in insect functional groups as well as taxa‐specific differences and were found to be driven by environmental characteristics such as non‐native forb cover. 4. Functional redundancy of herbivores decreased at restored sites, while pollinators became more redundant compared with non‐restored sites. The assemblages of the common species found at restoration sites contained more native insects than those found at non‐restored sites, including species such as Bombus vosnesenskii. 5. Local grassland restoration has the potential to induce an alternative stable state change and affect insect community assemblages. Additionally, it was found that grassland restoration can be a potential conservation tool to provide refugia for bumblebees (Bombus), but additional studies are required to fully understand its broader applicability. 相似文献

The use of plantations to manage extensive tracks of deforested lands in the tropics is a conservation strategy that has recently received considerable attention. Plantation trees can promote seed dispersal by attracting dispersers and creating favorable site conditions, leading to increased germination and establishment of indigenous trees. Subsequently, plantation trees can be harvested for profit or left to senesce, leaving a native tree community. We evaluated the effect of vine, grass, and shrub cutting (weeding) over a 3‐year period on regeneration of indigenous trees subsequent to the removal of plantation softwoods in Kibale National Park, Uganda. Counter to what would be expected if weeding released trees from competition, we found no difference in the total number of stems or in the stems greater than 10 cm diameter at breast height between control and weeded plots; there were more stems greater than 1 cm diameter at breast height in the control plots. For species found in both control and weeded plots, the maximum size of individuals did not differ. At the end of the study, 61 species were found in the control plots and 43 species were found in the weeded plots, and in both types of plots the three most abundant species were the same. The number of species and stems classified as early or middle successional species did not differ between weeded and control plots. The fact that weeding did not promote regeneration of indigenous trees after the removal of plantation trees illustrates the importance of evaluating and field‐testing potential management options. 相似文献

We have studied the effects of fetal neuronal grafts on the temporal pattern of drinking behavior of suprachiasmatic nuclei (SCN)-lesioned adult rats. Additionally, in an independent set of animals, the immunohistochemical staining for vasopressin, vasoactive intestinal polypeptide, and neuropeptide Y and the retinal connections to the hypothalamus were studied. The behavioral experiments indicate that anterior hypothalamic transplants induced reorganization of the temporal pattern of drinking behavior when placed in the third ventricle of adult hosts bearing complete SCN lesions, but not when placed in a cavity in the occipital cortex. Such rhythmicity persists only when the animals were recorded under constant darkness but not under constant light, indicating that the restored rhythmicity was generated endogenously but that the oscillator was extremely sensitive to light. Fetal occipital cortex induced reorganization of the temporal pattern of previously arrhythmic hosts, but it disappeared when the animals were recorded under constant light or constant darkness. It is clear that this rhythmicity was exogenous. In contrast to the cortical transplants, the hypothalamic transplants showed a morphological organization similar to that found in the normal hypothalamus regardless of their placement in the host brain. From these observations it is concluded that development of neocortex is more affected by environmental factors than that of the hypothalamus. Both hypothalamic and cortical transplants induced sprouting of retinal fibers into the anterior hypothalamus and the grafted tissue. Abstract.
- 1 A case study is presented of the autumn migration of the brown planthopper, Nilaparvata lugens (Stål), in the area of Nanjing in the People's Republic of China. The study was made using a high frequency (8 mm wavelength) radar and a net suspended from a kytoon.
- 2 The observations confirmed that long-distance return migrations occur in China in mid and late September, with N.lugens being carried on the prevailing north-easterly wind towards the autumn infestation and overwintering areas of the species.
- 3 After mass take-off in the late afternoon or at dusk, the migrants flew for several hours during the evening, often in a dense layer which formed at heights between about 400 and 1000m above ground. These layers often had well-defined ceilings corresponding to an air temperature of about 16°C. The migration height was above the top of the surface temperature inversion, i.e. the migrants did not fly at the height of the warmest air.
- 4 The dense layer concentrations overflying the radar were backtracked to source areas up to 240 km away in the north-east of Jiangsu Province. Planthoppers observed emigrating from the Nanjing area would reach areas in south Anhui Province or north Jiangxi Province if they flew for 12 h.
- 5 There was a second period of mass take-off at dawn. Insect layers sometimes formed but did not last longer than 1–2h.
- 6 The present results were strikingly different from those previously observed in the dry season in the Philippines, where migratory flight durations were largely confined to periods of about 30min at dusk and dawn.
- 7 Our observations are discussed in relation to the equator-wards return migrations undertaken in autumn by other insect species, and the importance of these migrations for the maintenance of long-flying genotypes in the overwintering populations is considered.

Experiences over the last 25 years have demonstrated that eutrophication can be reversed, and that phosphorus is most often the nutrient through which control should be exerted.The reduction of the external load of phosphorus to a eutrophic lake is a necessary condition for lake restoration, but may not in itself be sufficient. Three main response patterns to a reduction in external load are identified. These include reduction in lake phosphorus that leads to sufficient reduction in chlorophyll to change the trophic category, to make the lakes less eutrophic or have small or no effect. The factors that determine the actual response are discussed.It is clear that interventions to restore eutrophic lakes have not always given the results expected. Biomanipulation as a tool for lake restoration is discussed mainly using literature data. It is based on the exploitation of the interactions both within and between the trophic levels in an aquatic ecosystem. Important among the interactions are: competition for light and nutrients between aquatic macrophytes and phytoplankton and among different phytoplankton species; grazing by planktonic and benthic filter feeders; and size-selective predation by fish. In several case studies biomanipulation has proved to be successful in restorating mildly eutrophic small waterbodies. However, for long-term stability of the restored ecosystems supplementary measures like reducing the external nutrient loadings are needed. The feasibility of the different biomanipulation measures to improve the water quality in shallow Dutch lakes is discussed. Preliminary results on biomanipulation experiments in enclosures withOscillatoria agardhii and the benthic filter feederDreissena polymorpha are given. 相似文献

Monthly changes of physical, chemical and biological variables due a combination of artificial inflow of clean water, removal of hypolimnetic water, and diversion of sewage were studied in Lake Bled from December 1980 to December 1982.During the winter period 1981/82 the species composition of the phytoplankton changed. New species replaced those observed in previous years. We conclude that the combined effect of these three lake restoration measures was responsible for the sudden disappearance ofOscillatoria rubescens D.C. A marked decrease in some nutrients and an increase in temperature and oxygen concentration also occurred. 相似文献
