1. Larvae of tortoise beetles present exaggerated body parts in association with an abdominal shield, which is made of faeces and exuviae that are deposited on the urogomphi throughout ontogeny. Growth trajectories and scaling relationships of these functional structures associated with the shield, if any, are unknown. 2. This study of Gratiana spadicea first tested, under field conditions, whether there is adaptive value associated with the shield regarding protection against predation and sunlight. Then, under laboratory conditions, the growth trajectory and allometric relationships among body parts were investigated, including scoli, individual and apparent furcae, and shield. The influence of food deprivation on the development of these structures was also determined. 3. Findings from previous studies were confirmed, suggesting that the adaptive value assigned to the shield is related to protection against predators. The present study demonstrated for the first time that the shield acts as a parasol in cassidines, decreasing the exposure of their larval body to sunlight. The scoli and apparent furca are exaggerated structures of G. spadicea, the development of which involves allometric growth and greater energetic investment (positive allometry) during ontogeny. There was proportionally less energetic investment for somatic construction of individual furca (negative allometry) due to the accumulation of the exuviae. 4. The possible consequences, in terms of developmental costs and survivorship benefits associated with the evolution of such exaggerated structures, are discussed.  相似文献

Hemiodus iratapuru, a new species of the Hemiodontidae from the Rio Iratapuru, a left bank tributary of the Rio Jari, Amazon Basin, Brazil, is described. The new species is diagnosed from other species of Hemiodus by modifications in the ectopterygoid, tooth form, scale counts, dorsal‐fin form and colour pattern. The new species is proposed to be related to the Hemiodus quadrimaculatus species group.  相似文献

The enteric nervous system (ENS) in vertebrate embryos is formed by neural crest-derived cells. During development, these cells undergo extensive migration from the vagal and sacral regions to colonize the entire gut, where they differentiate into neurons and glial cells. Guidance molecules like netrins, semaphorins, slits, and ephrins are known to be involved in neuronal migration and axon guidance. In the CNS, the repulsive guidance molecule (RGMa) has been implicated in neuronal differentiation, migration, and apoptosis. Recently, we described the expression of the subtypes RGMa and RGMb and their receptor neogenin during murine gut development. In the present study, we investigated the influence of RGMa on neurosphere cultures derived from fetal ENS. In functional in vitro assays, RGMa strongly inhibited neurite outgrowth of differentiating progenitors via the receptor neogenin. The repulsive effect of RGMa on processes of differentiated enteric neural progenitors could be demonstrated by collapse assay. The influence of the RGM receptor on ENS was also analyzed in neogenin knockout mice. In the adult large intestine of mutants we observed disturbed ganglia formation in the myenteric plexus. Our data indicate that RGMa may be involved in differentiation processes of enteric neurons in the murine gut.  相似文献

Experimental techniques with high temporal and spatial resolution extend our knowledge of how biological macromolecules self-organise and function. Here, we provide an illustration of the convergence between simulation and experiment made possible by techniques such as triplet-triplet energy transfer and fluorescence quenching with long-lifetime and fast-quenching fluorescent probes. These techniques have recently been used to determine the average time needed for two residues in a peptide or protein segment to form a contact. The timescale of this process is accessible to computer simulation, providing a microscopic interpretation of the data and yielding new insight into the disordered state of proteins. Conversely, such experimental data also provide a test of the validity of alternative choices for the molecular models used in simulations, indicating their possible deficiencies. We carried out simulations of peptides of various composition and length using several models. End-to-end contact formation rates and their dependence on peptide length agree with experimental estimates for some sequences and some force fields but not for others. The deviations are due to artefactual structuring of some peptides, which is not observed when an atomistic model for the solvation water is used. Simulations show that the observed experimental rates are compatible with considerably different distributions of the end-to-end distance; for realistic models, these are never Gaussian but indicative of a rugged energy landscape.  相似文献

The defensive secretion of the harvestman Camarana flavipalpi (Gonyleptidae) was chemically characterized, revealing the presence of a single, highly volatile component (2-methyl-5-ethyl-phenol). Individuals do not frequently use chemical defenses and rely mainly on thanatosis as defense. Two types of emission of secretions were recorded: a globule at the gland opening without liquid displacement and liquid displacement along the lateral margins of the dorsal scute with accumulation of fluid at the lateroposterior area of the body. The anterior opening of the ozopore is covered by an integumentary dome that faces the laterodorsal area of the scute. The lateral channel is well defined near the opening of the ozopore and along the lateral margin of the dorsal scute as rows of small granules. The ozopore morphology of C. flavipalpi is similar to closely related species and simplified when compared with other species that promptly release chemical secretions.  相似文献

Hatching gland cells of the medaka, Oryzias latipes, have been observed to differentiate from the anterior end of the hypoblast, which seems to first involute at the onset of gastrulation. These results suggest that the hatching gland cells of medaka originate from the embryonic shield, the putative organizer of this fish. The present study investigated whether hatching gland cells really originate from the embryonic shield in the medaka. Transplantation experiments with embryonic shield and in situ hybridization detection of hatching enzyme gene expression as a sign of terminal differentiation of the gland cells were carried out. The analysis was performed according to the following processes. First, identification and functional characterization of the embryonic shield region were made by determining the expression of medaka goosecoid gene and its organizer activity. Second, it was confirmed that the embryonic shield had an organizer activity, inducing a secondary embryo, and that the developmental patterns of hatching gland cells in primary and secondary embryos were identical. Finally, the hatching gland cells as identified by hatching enzyme gene expression were found to coincide with the dye-labeled progeny cells of the transplanted embryonic shield. In conclusion, it was determined that hatching gland cells were derived from the embryonic shield that functioned as the organizer in medaka.  相似文献

In this paper, we synthesize a series of cyclometalated ligands and their corresponding Ir(III) complexes using pentane-2,4-dione as the auxiliary ligand. We discuss the photophysical properties of these Ir(III) complexes in detail, including their UV-Vis absorption spectra, photoluminescence spectra in solid and liquid states, luminescence decay lifetimes, and luminescence quantum yields. The correlation between self-quenching effect and molecular structure is also investigated. It is found that these Ir(III) complexes are solid-emitting ones due to their reduced self-quenching in solid state. Theoretical calculation and experimental data reveal that the following two reasons should be responsible for the reduced self-quenching in solid state: (1) pentane-2,4-dione, phenyl, and triphenylamine moieties serve as inert shields for the excited state Ir(III) complexes; (2) the radiative decay process in these Ir(III) complexes is accelerated by the introduction of electron-donors, and thus partly immune from self-quenching caused by intermolecular action.  相似文献

Netrin-1 induces repulsive axon guidance by binding to the mammalian Unc5 receptor family (Unc5A-Unc5D). Mouse genetic analysis of selected members of the Unc5 family, however, revealed essential functions independent of Netrin-1, suggesting the presence of other ligands. Unc5B was recently shown to bind fibronectin and leucine-rich transmembrane protein-3 (FLRT3), although the relevance of this interaction for nervous system development remained unclear. Here, we show that the related Unc5D receptor binds specifically to another FLRT protein, FLRT2. During development, FLRT2/3 ectodomains (ECDs) are shed from neurons and act as repulsive guidance molecules for axons and somata of Unc5-positive neurons. In the developing mammalian neocortex, Unc5D is expressed by neurons in the subventricular zone (SVZ), which display delayed migration to the FLRT2-expressing cortical plate (CP). Deletion of either FLRT2 or Unc5D causes a subset of SVZ-derived neurons to prematurely migrate towards the CP, whereas overexpression of Unc5D has opposite effects. Hence, the shed FLRT2 and FLRT3 ECDs represent a novel family of chemorepellents for Unc5-positive neurons and FLRT2/Unc5D signalling modulates cortical neuron migration.  相似文献
