We compared the shape and eggshell thickness of Great Auk Pinguinus impennis eggs with those of its closest relatives, the Razorbill Alca torda, Common Guillemot Uria aalge and Brünnich's Guillemot Uria lomvia, in order to gain additional insights into the breeding biology of the extinct Great Auk. The egg of the Great Auk was most similar in shape to that of Brünnich's Guillemot. The absolute thickness of the Great Auk eggshell was greater than that of the Common Guillemot and Razorbill egg, which is as expected given its greater size, but the relative shell thickness at the equator and pointed end (compared with the blunt end) was more similar to that of the Common Guillemot. On the basis of these and other results we suggest that Great Auk incubated in an upright posture in open habitat with little or no nest, where its pyriform egg shape provided stability and allowed safe manoeuvrability during incubation. On the basis of a recent phylogeny of the Alcidae, we speculate that a single brood patch, a pyriform egg and upright incubation posture, as in the Great Auk and the two Uria guillemots, is the ancestral state, and that the Razorbill – the Great Auk's closest relative – secondarily evolved two brood patches and an elliptical egg as adaptations for horizontal incubation, which provides flexibility in incubation site selection, allowing breeding in enclosed spaces such as crevices, burrows or under boulders, as well as on open ledges.  相似文献

Pulmonary pseudallescheriasis in an immunocompetent patient without a pre-existing cavity or cyst is a rare phenomenon. We report a case of invasive pulmonary pseudallescheriasis in a lobectomised patient treated for tuberculosis. Filamentous fungi with pyriform conidia were seen in the bronchoalveolar lavage fluid .The fungus was identified as Pseudallescheria boydii on culture.  相似文献

The adaptive significance of avian egg shape in birds is poorly understood. The pyriform (pear‐like) shape of the Common Guillemot's Uria aalge egg has long been considered to be an adaptation to prevent eggs rolling off the bare cliff ledges on which this species breeds. Rolling was thought to be prevented either by the egg spinning like a top, which is not the case, or by rolling in an arc, which it does but with little influence on whether the egg will fall from a ledge. We therefore sought alternative explanations for the pyriform shape of the Common Guillemot's egg. This species breeds in extremely dense colonies, which makes their eggs vulnerable to mechanical damage from conspecifics, and to contamination by debris such as faeces and soil. We present evidence consistent with both these possible explanations. First, the pyriform shape of Common Guillemot eggs means that a higher proportion of the eggshell lies in contact with the substrate and this may minimize the effect of impacts. Resistance to impacts may be further enhanced because their eggshells are especially thick where they are in contact with the substrate. Secondly, Common Guillemot eggs are often heavily contaminated with faecal material and other debris during incubation. Most contamination is on the pointed end of the egg where it is in contact with the substrate; the pyriform shape thus keeps the blunt end of the egg, which has the highest porosity, relatively free of contamination, which in turn may facilitate both gas exchange during incubation and the hatching process, because the chick emerges from the blunt end of the egg.  相似文献

本文对11组中国古代人群头骨面部的犬齿窝、颧骨缘突和梨状孔上外侧部膨隆三项非测量特征进行了群体间出现率的差异性检验, 以探讨其在区分群体变异时是否有意义。应用两样本率差异的χ2检验,比较了这三项非测量特征在性别、人群和种族方面的差异。研究结果表明,男性犬齿窝的出现率所反映的种族差异比较明显。颧骨缘突的出现率在进行人群间比较时更具有意义。汉代以来, 梨状孔上外侧部膨隆在中国北方新疆地区的欧罗巴人种男性与华北北部地区及东北地区的蒙古人种男性间存在着显著性差异。笔者发现, 犬齿窝和梨状孔上外侧部膨隆这两项特征可能存在着比较紧密的相关性,即犬齿窝越发育, 梨状孔上外侧部也会较为膨隆。对于犬齿窝和梨状孔上外侧部膨隆的相关性及其产生机制, 笔者提出了两种假说: 其一是鼻部形态的改变引起了梨状孔上外侧部膨隆, 并进而导致了犬齿窝的发育; 其二是因为颌部特别是犬齿的功能减退,造成犬齿后上方的区域凹陷, 进而引起了梨状孔上外侧部膨隆状态。  相似文献

Aspartate and glutamate are the principal candidates for the excitatory neurotransmitter released by the lateral olfactory tract (LOT) in prepyriform cortex of the rat. Identity of action of the natural transmitter with exogenous glutamate and/or aspartate, however, has not yet been demonstrated. We show that bath-applied 2-amino-4-phosphonobutyric acid, a presumed specific glutamate antagonist, blocks LOT-stimulated prepyriform field potentials and single unit activity but not the single unit response to ionophoretically applied glutamate or aspartate in rat olfactory cortex slices. These results suggest that neither aspartate nor glutamate is the LOT transmitter. Responses to ionophoretically applied N-methyl-DL-aspartate, kainic acid, and DL-homocysteate were clearly decreased by 2-amino-4-phosphono-butyric acid. This suggests that these agents, usually presumed to be aspartate or glutamate agonists, act at different receptors than aspartate and glutamate.Supported by Armed Forces Radiobiology Research Institute, Defense Nuclear Agency, under Research Work Unit MJ 60203. Using alpha and beta spectrin mammalian antibodies on Western blotting, we demonstrated that lizard ovarian follicles contain two isoforms of alpha spectrin, Mr 94 and 134 kDa, and a 230 kDa beta spectrin, and that their pattern modifies in relation to pyriform cell differentiation. In fact, a positive immunoreaction is firstly evident within follicular epithelium of previtellogenic follicles when small cells differentiate into pyriform cells via intermediate cells. Later on, immunostain is present in pyriform cells and in the oocyte cortex that previously appears unstained. It is noteworthy that immunostain is also present on small cells located in contact with the oocyte membrane, but not on those located under the basal lamina and among pyriform cells, not engaged in pyriform cell differentiation. During the subsequent stages of previtellogenic phase, spectrin immunostain over the follicular epithelium and in the oocyte cortex does not change. By contrast, in vitellogenic follicles, when the follicular epithelium is constituted only by small cells, immunostain is evident at the level of the oocyte cortex and the cytoplasm of regressing pyriform cells. The present data strongly suggest that the alpha and beta spectrin pattern put in evidence during the different phases of lizard oocyte growth is related to the differentiation of small into pyriform cells, where such protein may guarantee a relationship between surface glycoproteins (Andreuccetti et al., 2001: Anat Rec 263:1-9), and the cytoskeleton distribution (Maurizii et al., 2000: Raf Mol Reprod Dev 57:159-166). Furthermore, the distribution of spectrin mRNA, similar to that observed for the protein, demonstrates that spectrin, once synthesized within pyriform cells, is transferred through intercellular bridges in the oocyte cortex, thus confirming that pyriform cells are nurse that significantly are involved in the oocyte growth. Finally, the present data demonstrate that alpha spectrin of lizard ovarian follicles has Mr quite different from those so far reported and may constitute a new group of isoforms. The excretory duct of pyriform glands in Araneus diadematus is connected to the secretory sac through an intermediary cell ring. Apices of these cells bear thick, long microvilli and cytoplasmic extensions containing microtubules in bundles, some of which are derived from normal basal bodies. These finger-like extensions lie between the cuticular intima and the secretory product; they are thought to protect the intima and to initiate moulding of the silk thread. Structural features of the duct cells suggest that the latter play a role in the control of the water content of the silk glue which is restricted to the last portion of the duct where numerous nerve endings are inserted between cells. It is evident that duct structure and chemical and physical characteristics of silk are correlated in all spider silk glands.  相似文献
