1. As for some other spring‐feeding moths, adult flight of Epirrita autumnata (Lepidoptera: Geometridae) occurs in late autumn. Late‐season flight is a result of a prolonged pupal period. Potential evolutionary explanations for this phenological pattern are evaluated. 2. In a laboratory rearing, there was a weak correlation between pupation date and the time of adult emergence. A substantial genetic difference in pupal period was found between two geographic populations. Adaptive evolution of eclosion time can thus be expected. 3. Metabolic costs of a prolonged pupal period were found to be moderate but still of some ecological significance. Pupal mortality is likely to form the main cost of the prolonged pupal period. 4. Mortality rates of adults, exposed in the field, showed a declining temporal trend from late summer to normal eclosion time in autumn. Lower predation pressure on adults may constitute the decisive selective advantage of late‐season flight. It is suggested that ants, not birds, were the main predators responsible for the temporal trend. 5. Egg mortality was estimated to be low; it is thus unlikely that the late adult period is selected for to reduce the time during which eggs are exposed to predators. 6. In a laboratory experiment, oviposition success was maximal at the time of actual flight peak of E. autumnata, however penalties resulting from sub‐optimal timing of oviposition remained limited.

We evaluated the performance of Coptera haywardi (Ogloblin) (Diapriidae) and Pachycrepoideus vindemiae (Rondani) (Pteromalidae), both hymenopteran pupal parasitoids of Anastrepha spp. (Diptera: Tephritidae). Performance was studied by manipulating the following environmental conditions in the laboratory: (1) soil type, (2) soil moisture content, (3) soil compaction, and (4) depth at which pupae were buried in the soil. There were two experiments: in the first, exposure time of pupae was held constant and in the second, it varied. In the first experiment, C. haywardi was significantly more effective than P. vindemiae in parasitizing fly pupae. With exposure time held constant (36 h), only soil type and pupal burial depth were significantly related to parasitism rates. While P. vindemiae only parasitized pupae located on the soil surface, C. haywardi attacked pupae that were buried up to 5 cm deep, performing better in clayey than in loamy soil. In the second experiment, exposure time (24, 36, 48, and 72 h) had no significant effect on parasitism rates, but soil type did. P. vindemiae again only attacked pupae on the soil surface while C. haywardi was also able to parasitize pupae that were buried up to 5 cm deep. We conclude that C. haywardi represents a viable candidate to replace the environmentally unfriendly P. vindemiae in augmentative biological control programs against fruit flies.

A series of experiments were conducted to characterize patterns of eclosion by Bemisia tabaci (Genn.) (Homoptera: Aleyrodidae) to their adult stage and to determine how these patterns are influenced by certain environmental parameters. Under a constant temperature of 29.5±0.6°C and a photoperiod of 14:10LD, 90% of the adults emerged from their pupal cases between 0600 and 0930 h (with lights on occurring at 0600 h). Few emerged during hours of darkness. The peak time of adult emergence was delayed when temperatures were fluctuated. Under a series of constant temperatures, a significant inverse correlation was found between the time of median emergence (i.e., eclosion of 50% of the total number of adults) and temperature (P<0.001). No emergence was observed at temperatures below 17±0.3°C. Emergence patterns persisted under conditions of continuous light and continuous darkness, suggesting the presence of a circadian system.

Abstract Size and weight measurements were made for all the life stages of Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius) B biotype from field grown cotton ( Gossypium hirsutum L.) and cantaloupe ( Cucumis melo L., var. cantalupensis ) in Phoenix, AZ and Fargo, ND, USA in 2000 and 2001. Nymphal volumes were derived from the measurements. The average nymphal volume increase for settled 1 st to the late 4th instar was exponential. The greatest increase in body volume occurred during development from the 3rd to early 4th instar. Nymphs on cotton leaves were wider, but not longer compared with those on cantaloupe. Ventral and dorsal depth ratios of nymphal bodies from 1 st to late 4th instars from cantaloupe leaves were significantly greater compared with those from cotton leaves. During nymphal development from 1st to 4th instar, the average (from the two host species) ventral body half volume increased by nearly 51 times compared with an increase of 28 times for the dorsal body half volume. Adult female and male average lengths, from heads to wing tips, were 1 126 μm and 953 μm, respectively. Average adult female and male weights were 39 and 17 μg, respectively. Average widths, lengths, and weights of eggs from cotton and cantaloupe were, 99 μm, 197 μm, and 0.8 μg, respectively. Average widths, lengths, and weights for exuviae of non-parasitized nymphs from both cotton and cantaloupe were 492 μm, 673 μm, and 1.20 μg, respectively; and widths, lengths, and weights of parasitized nymph exuviae were 452 μm, 665 μm, and 3.62 μg, respectively. Both exuviae from non-parasitized and parasitized nymphs from cotton leaves were wider, longer, and heavier than those from cantaloupe leaves.

Chironomid pupal skins were collected during one year from three sites along a chalk stream in southern England. The sites had similar chemistry and discharge but differed in their current and temperature regimes. Substrate composition upstream of each collection point was surveyed during spring, summer and autumn. Proportions of macrophytes and sediments were compared with proportions of chironomid species and trophic groups. Seasonal changes in substrate and pupal skin collections were correlated by classification and direct ordination techniques. The distribution of chironomid species were indicated as being significantly related to the recorded substrate data.

The chironomid fauna of the river Meuse in Belgium and The Netherlands was studied in order to determine spatial water quality variations. Because the river Meuse serves as a source for drinking water production for about five million people in Belgium and The Netherlands, water quality is an essential factor to be studied. From 1984 till 1989 pupal exuviae were collected. Water quality was assessed by several indices and autecological information of the various taxa. With regard to pollution the general trend through the years was the same. The most upstream sampling site, in the Belgian Ardennes, was relatively unpolluted. As a result of untreated industrial and municipal wastewater discharges in the Liège region, water quality deteriorated dramatically at the Dutch border. At the most downstream sampling site, near the river mouth, a slight recovery was observed. Apart from organic and inorganic pollution other environmental factors such as flow velocity and the nature of the riverbed, also play a significant role in the occurrence of the organisms. It is concluded that protective measures need to be taken to restore the affected river ecosystem. The editors deeply regret to have to announce that Nicole Frantzen died in a train accident on 30 November 1992.

Two diel emergence patterns (April and October 1990) of chironomids from a hyporhithral site (4th–5th order) in the Aude River are described. In April, 62 species were collected with a mean hourly richness of 31 (±4). The Orthocladiinae (91%) largely dominated the emergence. The total number of exuviae captured by one drift-net varied from 1300 to 11600 per one hour period. There was a clear bimodal pattern with peaks post dawn (07.00–09.00 hrs) and around sunset (18.00 hrs).In October, the total number of exuviae captured was much lower and varied from 150 to 540 per one hour period with post dawn (06.00–08.00 hrs) and post sunset (18.00 hrs) peaks. Nevertheless, the total species richness (65) was higher as was the mean hourly richness (37±4). The Orthocladiinae (68%) dominated less because of increases in the Tanytarsini (15%) and Chiromini (14%). A diel rhythm appeared in autumn emergence. Most of the Orthocladiinae exuviae were collected during daylight hours, whereas most of the Chironomini and Tanytarsini were sampled during darkness. A majority of the exuviae with a length below 3 mm emerged during daylight, but most of the exuviae above 5 mm length emerged during darkness. The exuviae with an intermediate length (3–5 mm) had an amodal diel emergence pattern. In spring and autumn, the majority of species had a bimodal emergence pattern either by day (Orthocladiinae) or by night (Chironominae). But the smallest species had either an unimodal (Thiennemaniella vittata) or bimodal (Neozavrelia fuldensis) daytime emergence. The diel emergence patterns of 10 of the most frequently recorded species are presented.

For three years chironomid larvae were collected bimonthly with a grab sampler in two deep storage reservoirs in The Netherlands. Chironomid pupal exuviae were collected monthly, from April to November, with a handnet. Net samples yielded more taxa than grab samples. The taxa found in net samples originated from more habitats, than taxa found in grab samples. The relative contribution of Orthocladiinae was much larger in net samples. Based on the results obtained in the two reservoirs, some advantages and disadvantages of both sampling methods are discussed.

Adult reproductive performance is linked to the period of feeding done by the final instar larva after attainment of a larval critical weight (LCW). The highest weight attained by a final instar larva is referred to as the larval maximum weight (LMW) and is the onset of the pre-pupal period. The relationships between LCW, pupal weight (PW) and adult weight (AW) are described as functions of the LMW. In the leafroller Cnephasia jactatana (Walker) (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) LCW was dependent on larval size and was approximately 75% of the mean LMW. LCW was about 29 mg and 36 mg for male and female larvae of 1.18 mm and 1.20 mm head-capsule width, respectively. Over three successive generations of laboratory rearing, PW was approximately 30% and 25% lower than the LMW for males and females, respectively. AW was consistently about 50% and 40% lower than the PW for males and females, respectively. The decrease in weight from LMW to PW was named as the constant DP and found to be 0.3 for males and 0.25 for females. The total decrease from LMW to AW was the constant DA and was 0.6 for males and 0.5 for females. The duration of the latent feeding period was positively correlated to PW and AW. LCW may be used to derive quality indices that describe and predict pupal and adult performance.

The rate of oxygen uptake and the amount of several main cell constituents were determined in NPV-infected and uninfected isolated pupal abdomens of the silkworm, Bombyx mori. The oxygen uptake in uninfected isolated abdomens increases for the first 2 days due to the effect of water injection, but thereafter it remains almost unchanged at a relatively low level. When isolated abdomens are infected with an NPV, the oxygen uptake increases markedly from 3 days postinfection onward, being about three times that of uninfected isolated abdomens at late stages of infection. The amounts of cell constituents analyzed in the present study change little in uninfected isolated abdomens throughout the experiment. Infection of NPV leads to a marked accumulation of both DNA and RNA, and a loss of glycogen. The amount of protein, lipid, and sugar are scarcely affected by NPV infection. These results indicate that the activity of metabolism in uninfected isolated abdomens is not only low but also stable, and that infection of NPV results in an activation of host cell metabolism. It is considered that such isolated pupal abdomens provide an excellent opportunity to analyze both the process of NPV replication and the alteration of host cell metabolism resulting from NPV infection.
